The Effects Of Alliance Portfolio Characteristics And Absorptive Capacity On Performance: A Study Of Biotechnology Firms, Gerard George, Shaker A. Zahra, Kathleen K. Wheatley, Raihan Khan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In many high technology industries, strategic alliances have become important for improving a firm's financial performance by providing knowledge that can be used to develop the capabilities needed to introduce new products. Therefore, researchers have examined those characteristics of alliances that can contribute to the performance of high technology companies. There is agreement that the structure and knowledge flows within alliances can affect a firm's innovativeness. However, to date, researchers have studied alliances as individual events or transactions, failing to recognize their synergistic effects as a coherent portfolio. Viewing alliances as a portfolio of strategic agreements, we suggest that portfolio …

Entwicklungsstand Und -Perspektiven Des Managements Dokumentierten Wissens Bei Grossen Beratungsunternehmen, Dieter Blessing, Gerold Riempp, Hubert Oesterle

Hubert Oesterle

Technology Transfer Into China: Preparing For A New Era, Arnoud De Meyer Apr 2001

Technology Transfer Into China: Preparing For A New Era, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Currently, there are three forces creating a more favourable background for western multinational companies to do new business in China by transferring new technology. First, growing overcapacity means China requires not traditional turnkey factories, but instead, technology which leads to innovation and improvement. Second, a changing attitude by all levels of Chinese government to demanding state-of-the-art technology including software instead of previous generation technology, and to technology management and commercial implementation more. Third, intellectual property rights are becoming better respected. The author makes suggestions to best manage technology transfer into China, with this changed background. Based on six case studies …

Us Manufacturing Extension Partnerships: Technology Policy Reinvented, Philip Shapira Jan 2001

Us Manufacturing Extension Partnerships: Technology Policy Reinvented, Philip Shapira

Philip Shapira

The US manufacturing extension partnership (MEP) is examined as an example of the new partnership paradigm in US technology policy. The MEP provides technology assistance services, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. Influenced by aims to reinvent government and reorient technology policy, the MEP seeks to be comprehensive, collaborative, and demand-driven. However, the MEP’s partnered management style is constrained by political and industrial systems that continue to operate on traditional lines. After probing these tensions, the paper offers insights for the MEP’s future development and for other technology and innovation policies that seek to emulate the MEP’s partnership approach.

Agglomeration, Enterprise Size, And Productivity, Edward J. Feser Jan 2001

Agglomeration, Enterprise Size, And Productivity, Edward J. Feser

Edward J Feser

Much research on agglomeration economies, and particularly recent work that builds on Marshall's concept of the industrial district, postulates that benefits derived from proximity between businesses are strongest for small enterprises. This paper investigates this hypothesis, examining the degree to which local business externalities differ in magnitude and type among large and small enterprises in two U.S. manufacturing sectors. A four factor micro-level production function with oft-cited sources of agglomeration economies (local input supply, labor pools, knowledge spillovers) modeled as technology parameters and dummy variables representing varying definitions of plant size (and type, i.e., single or multi establishment unit) are …

Option-Based Management Of Technology Investment Risk, Michel Benaroch Jan 2001

Option-Based Management Of Technology Investment Risk, Michel Benaroch

Management - All Scholarship

Real operating (flexibility) options embedded in a technology investment are valuable because they allow management to take rational, value-adding actions that could favorably affect operational traits of the investment (timing, scale, scope, etc.). These options, however, are not inherent in technology investments. Rather, they usually must be carefully planned and designed to fit each investment differently. Building on concepts from the area of financial risk management, this paper presents a methodology for planning the creation of specific operating options designed to maximize the value of a technology investment in light of the risks underlying that investment. The paper also illustrates …

Making The Most Of Commercial Global Domains, Thomas G. Field Jr Jan 2001

Making The Most Of Commercial Global Domains, Thomas G. Field Jr

Law Faculty Scholarship

Despite echoing skepticism about the long-term prospects for commercial global domains based in part on how they are governed, this paper concludes that nominal addresses are essentially a new form of intellectual property, to be viewed and managed in ways sometimes fundamentally different from trademarks and other indicia of commercial goodwill. In support, the article first reviews the domain name system ("DNS") under which nominal addresses may be registered. The article then outlines central principles of unfair competition law underlying the resolution of disputes within the United States. Finally, the article reviews how nominal addresses pose several new kinds of …

Information And Communication Technology And Poverty: An Asian Perspective, M. G. Quibria, Feichin, Ted Tschang Jan 2001

Information And Communication Technology And Poverty: An Asian Perspective, M. G. Quibria, Feichin, Ted Tschang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Many commentators have extolled the virtues of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) in reducing poverty and improving the quality of life. While such arguments have been used before in relation to many predecessor technologies, including other earlier communications technologies, the promise has often floundered. This paper attempts to provide a more balanced analysis of the question, by exploring the linkages between the new ICTs and poverty reduction. It examines the linkages in two ways: the potential for direct impacts of ICTs on various areas of poverty and development, and the indirect impacts of ICTs on economic growth, exports and …

Mixing And Mapping Metadata To Provide Integrated Access To Digital Library Collections: An Activity Report, Karen S. Calhoun, Tom Turner, Meryl Brodsky, George Kozak, Martin Kurth, Fred Muratori, David Ruddy, Sarah Young Chandler

Karen S Calhoun

This paper provides a report of work in progress to implement integrated access to multiple digital collections that are described using a variety of metadata formats. Using the emerging resource discovery and digital library management system, ENCompass, a team at Cornell University Library is experimenting with the principle of modularity–as described by Lagoze–in which a metadata format tailored for simplicity (Dublin Core) is used alongside other, more complex metadata formats.

Innovation, Demand And Employment, Mario Pianta Dec 2000

Innovation, Demand And Employment, Mario Pianta

Mario Pianta

The paper examines the link between technological change and demand and their impact on employment in manufacturing industry. The specific nature of innovation, mainly oriented towards product or process innovations, is considered, in the light of the competitive strategies of firms and industries. An interpretative model is proposed and an empirical analysis is carried out, using the data of the European Innovation Surveys for five countries. The results of cross-industry regressions show that demand, structural change and orientation toward product innovations have a positive impact on employment change in the 1990s, while the intensity of innovative expenditure (including R&D, design, …
