Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) will soon start to be introduced into the transportation sector, thereby raising a host of issues related to their use, adoption and effects on the electricity sector. Their introduction has the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions from the transportation sector, which has led to government policies aimed at easing their introduction. If their wide-spread adoption is set as a target it is imperative to consider the effects of existing policies that may increase or decrease their adoption rate. In this study, we present a micro level electricity demand model that can gauge the effects …

Medal-winning fencer Wong Toon King is not some swash-buckling corporate hot shot, slashing and hacking at business rivals. Rather, the former government scholar turned serial entrepreneur believes that the important ingredients to building businesses include not just good ideas, but also a knack of identifying trends and a good sense of timing. Most importantly, entrepreneurs need to be happy at what they are doing – even if it means scooping and serving Ben & Jerry's ice-cream every day, said the founder of The Happy People Co., local franchisee of the popular brand of ice-cream.

The exponential growth of social networking sites over the past few years has not escaped the attention of business and government leaders, many of whom are now scrambling to uncover how best to exploit social interactions online for monetary or political gains. However, before any benefit can be realised and reaped, patterns in the relationships between users on these networks need to be analysed and understood; and to do that, there is a need to first unearth and organise data. Academics and industry practitioners exchanged their findings at a recent School of Information Systems workshop.

Many organisations invest heavily in information technology, acquiring the best IT equipment, backup for the best IT equipment, and hiring highly skilled and reputable IT consultants and vendors. While a great IT infrastructure will be critical to business success, its escalating costs have become somewhat prohibitive, thanks, in part, to a vicious lock-in cycle that handcuffs organisations to heavy machines. Enter cloud computing – a new paradigm in IT management that slashes capital expenditure and operating costs. Amazon.com, which runs the world's largest online retail store on a cloud, believes that cloud computing is the way forward for the connected …

After three years of difficult trading conditions Irish tourism needs to move towards recovery. Given that we are waiting next month for one of the toughest budgets in the history of the state, talk of recovery might seem a little premature. Nevertheless we know that economic conditions in some of our key source markets abroad continue to improve, and so consumer sentiment in these countries is likely to recover faster than here at home. In order to position itself for recovery, tourism will need to do two things. Firstly it will need to continue to offer value to a weakened, …

The word “entrepreneurship”, despite its universal prevalence today, was a relatively new term that entered common lexicon only a few decades ago. Yet, there is no denying the role that entrepreneurs play in creating wealth, not merely for themselves, but also opportunities and welfare for large swathes of the populace, benefitting the overall economy. At a recent talk, Carl J. Schramm, president and CEO of the Kaufmann Foundation, reinforces the case for entrepreneurship and debunks some common views on who “entrepreneurs” are.

There used to be a time where people would visit the library and shuffle between books in search for information. Back then, successful library vists hinged considerably on luck – if the book is available; if it can be located in the spot that corresponds to its call number; and if, once found, the book actually contained information relevant to what one might be looking for. Today, Google can tell us if a book is available at our library. Better yet, it can throw up thousands of search results to our query, thus saving us a trip to the library.

Culture is integral to the learning process. It is the organization and way of life within the community of students and teachers and directs the way they communicate, interact, and approach teaching and learning. Although founded in particular values and principles, the academy, like most organizations, is impacted day-to-day by its culture. Yet, the traditional higher education institution has not been designed to operate within a racially or ethnically diverse student population. The social, political, economic, and cultural forces that support the institution influence the teaching and learning environments. To better address cultural diversity in the classroom, faculty must first …

Interest in business modeling of technology enterprises – the activity of designing the architecture for revenues, costs, products and/or services delivery and the overall value of an enterprise – has risen to prominence with the global crossing of the Internet chasm. However, as several studies have pointed out (c.f., Osterwalder, Pigneur & Tucci, 2005; Teece 2010; Zott & Amit, 2010), the investigations of business models and their fit with the strategy of an enterprise, have received little scholarly attention. In this article we formulate a framework, called ADVISOR, for modeling the business strategies of enterprises in the Interactive Digital Media …

The Dynamic Impact Of Innovative Capability And Inter-Firm Network On Firm Valuation: A Longitudinal Study Of Biotechnology Start-Ups, Yanfeng Zheng, Jing Liu, Gerard George
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Prior research suggests that a high technology start-up's innovative capability and inter-firm network influence its performance and consequently, firm valuation. Few studies consider their joint influence and even fewer consider the temporal change of those effects on firm valuation. In this study, we propose that firm age, a key organizational variable, represents both the development of organizational routines from a start-up's perspective and the accumulation of accessible information from an investor's viewpoint. As such, an investor's evaluation of a high technology start-up's innovative capability and inter-firm network evolves with firm age. Using panel data of 170 biotechnology start-ups, our results …
The Pragmatic Incrementalism Of Common Law Intellectual Property, Shyamkrishna Balganesh
The Pragmatic Incrementalism Of Common Law Intellectual Property, Shyamkrishna Balganesh
All Faculty Scholarship
‘Common law intellectual property’ refers to a set of judge-made legal regimes that create exclusionary entitlements in different kinds of intangibles. Principally the creation of courts, many of these regimes are older than their statutory counterparts and continue to co-exist with them. Surprisingly though, intellectual property scholarship has paid scant attention to the nuanced law-making mechanisms and techniques that these regimes employ to navigate through several of intellectual property law’s substantive and structural problems. Common law intellectual property regimes employ a process of rule development that this Article calls ‘pragmatic incrementalism’. It involves the use of pragmatic and minimalist techniques …

Firms from emerging economies are rapidly becoming formidable competitors to established industry leaders from developed economies. Aside from anecdotal reports, there is little scholarly evidence concerning the operational details of how emerging economy firms are becoming competitive with developed economy firms. This article addresses the gap by building on the International Business, Strategy and Information Systems literature, and through an empirical analysis of original survey data for 468 firms across ten countries. We develop three primary empirical findings. First, despite the differences between emerging economy firms and developed economy firms, we find that emerging economy/high internationalization firms use marketing- and …

Technology, in and of itself, cannot transform ideas to profits. According to William Miller, a professor, entrepreneur and venture capitalist, having the technology that the market wants is only part of the game. To be successful, technology requires other necessary conditions to be in place – an ecosystem of talent, money, trade, education, art, even lawyers – to grow and flourish. The challenge, however, is in getting the hardware-software combination right.

Users searching the Internet for news are not able to find relevant fact-based results for certain queries using the major search engines. Queries that require exact substring matching in order to obtain very relevant results are not currently possible. Furthermore, search engines do not discriminate in returning results that are opinions and not quantifiable facts. Our sentence level search engine, News Fact Finder, is designed using suffix arrays, filters out opinions, and produces very relevant results that are attractive to users. The News Fact Finder produces a 73% success rate of providing relevant fact based results.

Development Of Information Technology Auditing Teaching Modules: An Interdisciplinary Endeavor Between Seidenberg And Lubin Faculty, Chienting Lin, Li-Chiou Chen, Kaustav Sen
Cornerstone 3 Reports : Interdisciplinary Informatics
The original goals of the project were to develop interdisciplinary Information Technology (IT) Auditing
teaching modules, to be integrated into courses offered by both Business and Information Technology
disciplines during Fall 2009 and Spring 2010. IT Auditing is an interdisciplinary field which requires
understanding audit, control, technology and security concepts in accordance with audit standards,
guidelines, and best practices. Thus, IT Auditing requires interdisciplinary knowledge across IT and
Accounting/Auditing domains. With increasing use of IT in business processes, the demand for IT
Auditors is increasing rapidly, offering a lucrative career path. Acquiring IT Audit related knowledge and
skills will help …

Long derided as an economic entity happier to copy than to invent, the number of patents filed and assigned in China has been growing at 13% annually in the two decades to 2006, with a total of 1.1 million patents awarded. Private enterprises, after a slow start, are now leading the charge in securing an ever bigger number of patents, especially after 2001. Individuals, meanwhile, are the second most prolific group. What causes this surge in patent applications? What are some of the issues involved? SMU management professor Kenneth Huang details findings from a recent study.

Anyone associated with higher education will acknowledge that tenure track faculty have to perform a fantastic balancing act. Compared to an administrative or line role in an organization, higher education faculty have tremendous autonomy and freedom. However, they face competing demands of many different (and good) opportunities, and for them the stakes are always high. Help is here! This article introduces a powerful strategy for staying on track in the research strand of this competitive journey.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The modern manufacturing marketplace is extremely complex and constantly changing. Career professionals often seek job placement, career advancement, and continuing education through professional certifications. Professional certifications in the United States (U.S.) have been evolving since 1911. In the 1950s, engineering groups established professional certifications and licenses. In the 1980s, administration of accreditation of certification programs proliferated, and by the 1990s, many government and professional organizations sought to standardize procedures for the industry. Currently, professional certifications are available for virtually every profession and issued by multitudes of organizations.
Quality management (QM) encompasses an extensive combination ofprofessional abilities. Providers of professional certifications …

Network providers are experimenting with a variety of new business arrangements. Some are offering specialized services the guarantee higher levels of quality of service those willing to pay for it. Others are entering into strategic partnerships that allocate more bandwidth to certain sources. Interestingly, a management literature exists suggesting that both developments may simply reflect the ways that the nature of competition and innovation can be expected as markets mature. The real question is not if the nature of competition and innovation will change, but rather when and how. This theory also suggests that policymakers should be careful not to …
