Organizing Culture: Leader Roles, Behaviors, And Reinforcement Mechanisms, Gerard George, Randall G. Sleeth, Mark A. Siders

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Organizational leaders provide the primary impetus in defining, forming and shaping corporate culture. Leadership literature emphasizes on the leader's role in "articulating a vision" and the leader's pivotal role in establishing culture by setting objectives and then removing hurdles by smoothing the path for attaining those objectives. The model of corporate culture transmission focuses on behaviors that corporate leaders employ to create, communicate and manage corporate culture. However, the model does not emphasize interpretation and identification with leader behaviors in ways that would cause members to embrace the leader's values and beliefs. Improved focus over two decades does not yet …

Using Strategic Partnerships To Create A Sustainable Competitive Position For Hi-Tech Start-Up Firms, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In most cases these companies chose or were forced to engage in a technology partnership in order to develop and survive. As one would expect, some of these partnerships succeeded whilst others failed. With hindsight it occurred to the author that success or failure was not necessarily a random event, or idiosyncratic to one particular company, but that there seemed to be a pattern. Some partnerships failed because they were a strategic misfit, others probably because they were badly implemented. Based on these clinical case studies, The author addresses these questions: when and under what conditions a partnership is needed; …

This study explores these differences with data from the young, science-based biotechnology industry, and examines the performance effects of manufacturing strategy variables including scope, competitive thrust, and capabilities. The results show that the corporate and independent biotechnology new ventures pursue significantly different manufacturing strategies, and that different dimensions of manufacturing strategies affect the performance of corporate vs. independent ventures quite differently.

Selection Of Expatriates For Regional Business Operations In Asia: A Study Of Mne Managers In Singapore, A. Ahad M. Osman-Gani, Wee Liang Tan, Thian Ser Toh

The recent interest for regionalization of business operations in Asia underscores the demand for expatriates. While much has been written on expatriation, very little was documented on expatriates assigned in Asian countries. In this respect, American, German, Japanese and Korean MNEs have been found to take active interests in regional expansion of business in Asia. Expatriation is a significant international management issue for them. The high costs of expatriation and the risks for expatriate failures also underscore this importance. As such, selecting the right candidate for expatriation success is a crucial issue for these MNEs. This paper presents the findings …

The development of the field of strategic management within the last two decades has been dramatic. While its roots have been in a more applied area, often referred to as business policy, the current field of strategic management is strongly theory based, with substantial empirical research, and is eclectic in nature. This review of the development of the field and its current position examines the field's early development and the primary theoretical and methodological bases through its history. Early developments include Chandler's (1962) Strategy and Structure and Ansoff's (1965) Corporate Strategy. These early works took on a contingency perspective (fit …

Competitive Interaction: The Influence Of Strategic Group Structure, Sherry M. Burlingame Apr 1999

Competitive Interaction: The Influence Of Strategic Group Structure, Sherry M. Burlingame

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The assertion that competitive interaction is a central focus of business strategy emerged from the Strategic Management Research Group (SMRG) at the University of Maryland. The premise of this perspective is that competition among firms can be modeled using communication theory to explain how firms in an industry interact. Competition, in this framework, is represented as the series of actions and counteractions, termed responses, that firms undertake to position themselves in their industry. Thus, in this model, interaction (actions and responses) equates with competition. Studies conducted by the members of the SMRG have outlined the relationship of key variables within …

Corporate Governance And Corporate Illegality: The Effects Of Board Structure On Environmental Violations, Marie A. Mckendall, Carol M. Sanchez, Paul Sicilian

Peer Reviewed Articles

This paper examined the effects of corporate governance structures on the incidence of corporate illegality by analyzing the relationship between environmental violations and several dimensions of corporate board structure. Results demonstrated that the value of stock owned by corporate officers and directors was positively and significantly associated with serious environmental violations. Outsider dominance, joint CEO‐Chairpersons, social responsibility committees, and attorneys on boards were not significantly related to corporate illegal behavior. The control variables of size, industry profitability, firm profitability, and industry concentration were all significantly related to environmental violations. The findings involving board structure cast doubt on the efficacy of …

East Vs. West: Strategic Marketing Management Meets The Asian Networks, George T. Haley, Chin Tiong Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Strategic management in Asia is different. Decision-making differs from that taught in Western, and even Asian, schools of business. In the last decade, the influence of Japanese management systems on Western management practice has become evident. Though the Japanese economy is the world's second largest, and Japan's population substantial, neither compares with the combined economies and combined populations of non-Japanese Asia. The influence of the most aggressive elements of the non-Japanese Asian business communities, the Overseas Chinese and Overseas Indian Networks cannot help to be felt on Western management practice. This article explains why this difference in decision-making styles exists, …

Librarians at Cornell University Library (CUL) launched the first system-wide integrated gateway to networked resources, services, and library information in January 1998. Using a case study approach, this article examines the design and implementation process that helped the project succeed, rather than focusing on the technology or the vision behind the gateway. The authors identify and discuss critical success factors and the organizational learning experience that moved CUL a step closer to mastering the process of innovation.
