Recruiting Process: The Decision Is Now, Joshua Michels
Recruiting Process: The Decision Is Now, Joshua Michels
Sport Management Undergraduate
The college athletic recruiting process is one cluttered with many different factors. Studies have analyzed institutional and social factors impacting a prospective student-athletes’ recruitment process. However, little research has explored recruiting from an athlete’s perspective on how they make their college decision. This study aimed to investigate the most influential factors in a Division III student-athlete’s college decision based on the college recruiting process. The purpose of conducting this research is to highlight and identify the factors that student athletes consider in regards to their recruiting process, and the school they later choose to attend and continue their athletic careers. …

Exploring Sport Related Sexual Assault On Twitter, Riley O'Brien
Sport Management Undergraduate
Sport related sexual assault has been prevalent in society. For the victims, there are limited avenues to cope with the issues they have faced in the aftermath of sexual assault. At collegiate sport organizations, there seems to be a disconnect between what is right and wrong, especially regarding sexual assault. This study navigates the rough waters of sexual assault and provides institutions with information regarding social media once there is a sexual assault case. Using Twitter, this study will search to find variables that are beneficial to victims and sport institutions alike that will help their story reach the maximum …

Drowning Prevention: Define And Then Gather Evidence Or Gather Evidence To Define?, Nina J. Nyitrai, Suzi Edwards, Nicholas O'Dwyer
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
According to the World Health Organization, drowning fatalities are a neglected public health issue ranked as the third most frequent cause of unintentional death by injury. Data used to record drowning incidents are acknowledged as inaccurate. Recommendations on drowning prevention based on these data are currently not informed by accurate, detailed and reliable evidence. Two modifications to current practice are proposed: 1) an Aquatic Incident Report needs to be developed as an extension of the current workplace incident report to prompt for information commonly not included in current drowning reports; and 2) National Water Safety Plans should be modified to …
The Impact Of Coaches' Character On Youth Basketball Players, Natasha Hill
The Impact Of Coaches' Character On Youth Basketball Players, Natasha Hill
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
If utilized effectively, recreation and sports can serve as major tools for developing youth, improving the educational environment, and increasing the number of productive adults that are healthier physically and mentally to positively impact society. Most research targeting recreation and sports developing youth has the perspective primarily of parents and youth. Evaluating the character strengths of coaches and youth athletes who actively participate in team basketball is vital.
An exploration of the value of basketball and character strengths of (n = 64) youth athletes, between the ages of 12 to 16 years, and the impact of their involvement with coaches …
Point/Counterpoint: Is There A Case For Subsidizing Sports Stadiums?, Victor Matheson
Point/Counterpoint: Is There A Case For Subsidizing Sports Stadiums?, Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
In recent decades, governments have committed enormous public resources to subsidize construction of new stadiums, and the dollar value of taxpayer contributions for these subsidies continues to climb. Spending of taxpayer dollars includes both direct subsidies from state and local governments, as well as indirect subsidies from the use of tax-exempt bonds to finance construction. In granting stadium subsidies, governments claim that the stadiums are a public good that attracts tourists and businesses, thereby generating increased spending and job creation—benefits that flow to the community rather than to team owners. But do such benefits exist, and are they large enough …

Professional Sports, Hurricane Katrina, And The Economic Redevelopment Of New Orleans: Revisited, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade, Callan Henderschott
Economics Department Working Papers
Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans in late August 2005, resulting in damage to much of the city’s sports infrastructure and the temporary departure of both of New Orleans’ major league professional sports teams, the National Football League Saints and the National Basketball Association Hornets. The city spent over $500 million restoring the sports infrastructure in New Orleans, and both teams subsequently returned to the city. In addition, New Orleans has since hosted numerous mega-sporting events including the Super Bowl, NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, and several college football national championships. This paper examines the economic impact of …
The Rise And Fall (And Rise And Fall) Of The Olympic Games As An Economic Driver, Victor Matheson
The Rise And Fall (And Rise And Fall) Of The Olympic Games As An Economic Driver, Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
This paper traces the economic history of major sporting events focusing on the Olympics. Historically, the Olympic Games as well as other major sporting events have been considered costly events that place a burden on host cities. Only in relatively recent years, coinciding with the massive increases in the cost of hosting these events, have event organizers begun to claim that these events bring with them large economic benefits.
