This project presents rent models for flexible, industrial, retail and office properties in the Unites States. Panel data are used covering the largest fifty metropolitan areas in the U.S. for 27 years (1982-2009) to analyze the determinants of rents.

Was Financial Market Contagion The Source Of Economic Crisis In Asia? Evidence Using A Multivariate Var Model, Ahmed Khalid, Masahiro Kawai

The episodes of financial crises in many parts of the world during the 1990s have sparked interest in identifying channels through which such crises spread from one country to another. Researchers have identified several factors that may have sparked and induced contagion. This study further extends the existing research by identifying and testing three financial market variables to trace the alleged origin and the subsequent path of the contagion during the 1997 Asian Crisis. Foreign exchange rates, stock market prices and interest rates are three main financial market indicators, representing the currency, stock and money markets, respectively. We use a …

Valuing Environmental Quality: A Space-Based Strategy (Forthcoming), David Clark, John Carruthers
David E. Clark
This paper develops and applies a space-based strategy for overcoming the general problem of getting at the demand for non-market goods. It focuses specifically on evaluating one form of environmental quality, distance from EPA designated environmental hazards, via the single-family housing market in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. A spatial two stage hedonic price analysis is used to: (1) estimate the marginal implicit price of distance from air release sites, hazardous waste generators, hazardous waste handlers, superfund sites, and toxic release sites; and (2) estimate a series of demand functions describing the relationship between the price of distance …

Interpretive Filters: Social Cognition And The Impact Of Turning Points In Negotiation, Dan Druckman, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith
Mara Olekalns
A number of studies have shown that certain events that occur during a negotiation can alter its course. Referred to as "turning points," these events are precipitated by actions taken either outside or inside the talks that have consequences for outcomes. In this article, we report the results of two experiments designed to examine the impacts of two types of precipitating actions, external and internal. In the first experiment, which focused on external actions, we found that crises — as opposed to breakthroughs — produced more movement in negotiations in which parties viewed the social climate positively (high trust, low …

How Relevant Is The Mba? Assessing The Alignment Of Required Mba Curricula And Required Managerial Competencies., Robert Rubin, Erich Dierdorff
Erich C. Dierdorff
Masters of business administration (MBA) programs are being met with escalating criticism from academics, students, and various organizational stakeholders. Central to these criticisms is the contention that the MBA is wholly out-of-touch with the “real world” and is irrelevant to the needs of practicing managers. Examining this contention, we investigated the relevancy of MBA curricula in relation to managerial competency requirements. Relying on an empirically derived competency model from 8,633 incumbent managers across 52 managerial occupations, our results showed that behavioral competencies indicated by managers to be most critical are the very competencies least represented in required MBA curricula. Findings …

Mixture Of Random Effects For Individual Learning Curves, Sally Wood, Edward Cripps, Robert Wood
Mixture Of Random Effects For Individual Learning Curves, Sally Wood, Edward Cripps, Robert Wood
Sally Wood
In the pyschology literature individuals are often classified as entity theorists or incrementalists. In this paper we explore the different learning behaviours over time of these two groups. To assess learning an individual is assigned a task and their performance on the task is measured over a number of trials. Learning behaviour is modelled as a mixture of two random effects, where the random effects components of the mixture correspond to increased learning and spiralling behaviour. We find significant differences in the learning behaviours of the two groups. Specifically those individuals who are categorized as entity theorists are more likely …

Mutually Dependent: Power, Trust, Affect And The Use Of Deception In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith
Mara Olekalns
Using a simulated two-party negotiation, we examined how trustworthiness and power balance affected deception. To trigger deception, we used an issue that had no value for one of the two parties. We found that high cognitive trust increased deception whereas high affective trust decreased deception. Negotiators who expressed anxiety also used more deception whereas those who expressed optimism also used less deception. The nature of the negotiating relationship (mutuality and level of dependence) interacted with trust and negotiators’ affect to influence levels of deception. Deception was most likely to occur when negotiators reported low trust or expressed negative emotions in …
The Milieu Of Managerial Work: An Integrative Framework Linking Work Context To Role Requirements., Erich Dierdorff, Robert Rubin, Frederick Morgeson
The Milieu Of Managerial Work: An Integrative Framework Linking Work Context To Role Requirements., Erich Dierdorff, Robert Rubin, Frederick Morgeson
Erich C. Dierdorff
Theoretical and empirical efforts focusing on the interplay between work context and managerial role requirements have been conspicuously absent in the scholarly literature. This paucity exists despite over 60 years of research concerning the requirements of managerial work and with the rather universal recognition that work context meaningfully shapes organizational behavior. The authors developed a theoretical model linking different types of role requirements to different forms of work context. They empirically tested this framework with a nationally representative sample of 8,633 incumbents spanning 52 managerial occupations. Findings from hierarchical linear modeling analyses demonstrated that discrete forms of context (task, social, …

Do Leaders Reap What They Sow? Leader And Employee Outcomes Of Leader Cynicism About Organizational Change., Robert Rubin, Erich Dierdorff, William Bommer, Timothy Baldwin
Erich C. Dierdorff
Despite increased attention given to the attitude of organizational cynicism, few studies have examined the impact of leader cynicism in organizations. The present study sought to investigate relationships between leader cynicism about organizational change (CAOC) and outcomes relevant to both the leader (performance and organizational citizenship behavior ratings) and his/her employees (employee organizational commitment and CAOC). Using data from 106 manufacturing managers, leader CAOC was found to negatively influence both leader and employee outcomes. Of particular importance, transformational leader behavior was found to fully mediate these relationships and thus served as an important explanatory mechanism. A discussion concerning the potential …

Action Research In Emerging Technologies In Health Information Systems: Creating A Mobile Information Environment In A Hospital Ward, Linda Dawson, Julie Fisher, Stephen Weeding, Liza Heslop, Andrew Howard
Associate Professor Linda Dawson
Wireless networks, mobile devices and associated applications are key emerging technologies ideal for nomadic workers such as clinicians in hospital ward settings. These mobile information environments can potentially enhance clinicians’ use of patient management and clinical systems by providing decision support and clinical information at the bedside or point of care. Such technologies need to be critically assessed in a hospital environment for their wider potential and application for delivery of information at the point of care. This paper describes the use of action research methods in a project which analysed an existing clinical Information Communication Technology (ICT) environment in …
