The Microfinance Experiment: An Evaluation Of Programs And Effectiveness In St. Louis, Maxwell Miller

Honors Scholar Theses

Widespread poverty remains a reality for many in both developed and developing countries. Policymakers, charitable organizations, and entrepreneurs have introduced diverse strategies to provide individuals and communities opportunities to rise from poverty. One such method is microfinance, a system developed by Muhammad Yunus in the early 1970s to provide small loans and financial services to borrowers too impoverished or otherwise lacking in credibility or collateral to be considered by traditional means of credit.

Since its inception, microfinance has spread among other countries to mixed success. While many researchers claim microfinance has proven to be an effective tool to combat poverty, …

Examination Of Institutional Investment In The United States Of America From 1999 To 2018, Martin R. Lefebvre Nov 2020

Examination Of Institutional Investment In The United States Of America From 1999 To 2018, Martin R. Lefebvre

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis examines the evolution of spatial preference of institutional investors located in the United States of America for the time period of 1999 to 2018 using a mix of exploratory data analysis techniques and more sophisticated space-time and machine learning techniques such as ESRI Space-Time cube and Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic modeling. This thesis concludes that despite having the appearance of a footloose industry due to almost negligible fixed costs, institutional investors are attracted to highly dynamic urban centres and on the 20 year time horizon, appear surprisingly sticky in their location preference. This is consistent with the belief …

Navigating A Risk-Filled Sea: Insights On How The Law And Insurance Chart A Course By Allocating Liabilities And Creating Incentives, Stephen M. Shapiro

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

Risk can be defined as the probability and extent of liability. Risk management involves identifying, evaluating, and minimizing liabilities, which is critical to the success of a wide range of enterprises. Managers often turn to insurance to reallocate risk, and to experts such as surveyors, engineers, attorneys, and accountants to identify and evaluate risks and to advise on how to reduce them. The law also ascertains, allocates, and liquidates liabilities, and affects how insurance reallocates them. Policymakers-both industrial and legal-must be aware of how industry practices, expert services, insurance provisions, and legal structures are intertwined to achieve diverse, and perhaps …

Self-Regulated Learning And The Role Of Eportfolios In Business Studies, Amparo Soler-Dominguez, Lucia Morales, Valentina Tarkovska

Articles

Through a case study supported by observation techniques, and questionnaires to gather data, we explored the use of ePortfolios as an efficient assessment tool to assist business degree students. Our main focus was a postgraduate course in which finance modules were a major component. We analysed the role of ePortfolios in Higher Education Institutions over a period of four academic years. Our findings suggest that ePortfolios could be used to facilitate and enhance students’ selfregulated learning. The role of the instructor was found to be fundamental in the early stages of the learning process. This role diminished as students became …

Using Inoculation Messages To Protect “Stay In The Market” Beliefs During Financial Crises, Lindsay Lyles Dillingham

This paper focuses on the problem of collapsed “stay in the market” (SIM) beliefs during financial crises. Ancillary purposes of this study were to further investigate the role of print and video crises, explicit instructions regarding post-inoculation talk (PIT), and gain and loss frame inoculation messages on the inoculation process. This study used a between subjects factorial design (3 x 2 plus four additional conditions) to explore ten hypotheses. Data collected from …

Survival Analysis Of Internet Companies: An Application Of The Hazard Model, Khaled Elkhal Oct 2002

Survival Analysis Of Internet Companies: An Application Of The Hazard Model, Khaled Elkhal

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to develop a model that predicts failure and estimates the time of survival of dotcoms using a number of financial and non-financial factors. This model can be used as a warning tool for stockholders, creditors, and consumers to protect themselves from such failures.

I employ the Cox (1972) Proportional Hazards Model in a cross-sectional and time-varying context using financial data over the 1998–2001 period. Results from a cross-sectional analysis reveal that the coefficient estimates for variables CFTL and NSTA are consistently negative and highly significant. This suggests that higher sales and cash flows lower …

Financial Management And Uni Students: A Proposal For Financial Education In The General Education Program At Uni, Carrie Schnieders

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The survey results were compiled ( except where noted) as a whole sample, as no significant differences were found to exist between sex and major. Class standing (and therefore, age) did result in some notable differences in the credit card and student loan categories, which is specified. The first half of the research is to find out what basic financial management skills UNI students have or utilize. The second phase of the research focused on how students felt about their financial knowledge, and if they felt a personal financial management class would be beneficial both to themselves and other students …
