Understanding Conflict Avoiding Behavior In China : The Role Of Goal Interdependence And Behavioral Intentions, Lin Wang Jan 2012

Understanding Conflict Avoiding Behavior In China : The Role Of Goal Interdependence And Behavioral Intentions, Lin Wang

Theses & Dissertations

It is a commonly held belief that people from collectivistic, large power distance or high-context cultures, such as China, tend to be less confrontational, which could be counter-productive in organizations. Contrary to this traditional view, this study posits that conflict avoidance can be constructive depending on the specific actions protagonists take. It adopts Deutsch’s (1973) theory of cooperation and competition to understand conflict avoiding behavior between employees and their supervisors, indicating that people’s perceptions of goal interdependence significantly influence their behavioral intentions that in turn predict their overt actions to avoid conflict. Specifically, it proposes that goal interdependence greatly affects …

Power Distance And Its Moderating Impact On Empowerment And Team Participation, Yi Zhang Oct 2010

Power Distance And Its Moderating Impact On Empowerment And Team Participation, Yi Zhang

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This paper studies how power distance (the level of acceptance of an uneven distribution) impacts empowerment and team participation for two types of Chinese employees: those working in Chinese R&D companies, and employees of China-based American R&D companies. These two groups have different perceptions of individual power distance; Chinese employees in American companies have a lower power distance perception than Chinese employees in Chinese companies. High power distance and high empowerment lead to high team participation. Indigenously rooted cultures and companies' home-country cultures together influence employees' values, attitudes, and behaviors through top-down socialization and organizational acculturation processes. The findings have …

Work Support, Work-Family Enrichment, Work Demand And Work Well-Being Among Chinese Employees : A Study Of Mediating And Moderating Processes, Shuwen Tang

Theses & Dissertations

Work and family are the central and salient domains in one’s life. Juggling work and family life has become a challenge for many employees and families (Hammer et al., 2005). This study proposed a theoretical model in which work to family enrichment functioned as the mediator between work support (support from supervisor, co-workers and organization) and work well-being (job satisfaction and psychological health), and also examined whether work demand buffered the impact of work support on work well-being. The inclusion of work to family enrichment extends prior research on Job Demands – Resources model (Demerouti & Bakker, 2007), and allows …

How Do Institutions Affect Auditor Reporting Behavior? Empirical Evidence From China, Yang An Jan 2007

How Do Institutions Affect Auditor Reporting Behavior? Empirical Evidence From China, Yang An

Theses & Dissertations

It is well documented in cross-country research that institutions, both economic and political, affect the reporting behavior of auditors and audit services. These findings are based on the assumption that institutions vary across countries but are more homogeneous within a country. However, cross-country research suffers from the problems of country-specific cultures, accounting rules, and regulations, and can be criticized for the use of small sample sizes, potential endogeneity, and the correlation of omitted variables. This study overcomes these problems by engaging in within-country research. Specifically, this study examines how variations in the institutional environment within China affect auditor reporting behavior. …
