Classifying Interdependencies In The Food And Agriculture Critical Infrastructure Sector, John Doerpinghaus
Classifying Interdependencies In The Food And Agriculture Critical Infrastructure Sector, John Doerpinghaus
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work classifies examples of infrastructure interdependencies found in the food and agriculture critical infrastructure sector. Interdependencies are identified through an examination of rice and poultry agriculture throughout the state of Arkansas. The subtleties of interdependence examples in the food and agriculture sector are inadequately captured by the well-studied interdependence classification taxonomies. Through 39 interviews, we develop an understanding of the subtle temporal, geographic, and productivity scales of interdependence in over 100 examples and present five new, distinct classifications of interdependence: (1) dynamic physical, (2) dynamic geographic, (3) deadline, (4) delay, and (5) human, economic, and natural resource interdependencies. An …

The Linkages Among Market Structure, Market Conduct, And Service Quality: Analysis Of The U.S. Domestic Airline Industry, Amirhossein Alamdar Yazdi
Doctoral Dissertations
As supported by the dynamic structure-conduct-performance (S-C-P) paradigm, market structure affects conduct, and conduct determines firms’ performance (Mckinsey & Company Quarterly, 2008). Several researchers have looked at the S-C-P relationship with focus on price. Boreinstein, 1990; Beutel and McBride, 1992; Kim and Singal, 1993; Morrison, 1996; Veldhuis, 2005; Peters, 2006; Zhang and Round, 2009 looked at the effect of airline mergers on fares; some others have looked at the linkage between the imposition of fees and stock values (Barone, et al., 2012), ticket prices (Henrickson & Scott, 2012; Brueckner, et al., 2015); and some examine the effects of low-cost carriers …

Containing Risk When Maximizing Supply-Chain Performance, Harrison Luvai
Dissertations
The objective of this dissertation is to develop and test an approach that will quantify the level of risk in the supply chain, evaluate the cost and impact of risk mitigation strategies, validate event management protocols pre-implementation, and optimize across a portfolio of risk mitigation strategies. The research integrates a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model and a Discrete Event Simulation model to investigate a production-inventory-transportation problem subject to risk. The MILP model calculates the optimal Net Profit Contribution of the supply chain in the absence of risk. Deviation risks are introduced as volatility in final demand and lead times, …

Optimizing Strategic Sourcing In The Healthcare Supply Chain With Consideration Of Physician Preference And Vendor Scorecards, Parimal Kulkarni
Dissertations
This research focuses on the design of a procurement model for expensive medical supplies in a healthcare supply chain. A deterministic optimization model generates recommendations for optimal purchases of products in a given planning period. The model combines common concepts of supply chain procurement such as leveraging tiered pricing, ensuring supply base diversity with phenomena unique to healthcare supply chain such as consideration of physician preference for products. The deterministic optimization model minimizes total spend over a chosen planning period with consideration of four key decision parameters:
- Physician preference requirements (which are imposed as rules on product substitutability),
- Upper limits …

Assessing The Impacts Of Crowdsourcing In Logistics And Supply Chain Operations, Ha Hai Ta
Assessing The Impacts Of Crowdsourcing In Logistics And Supply Chain Operations, Ha Hai Ta
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Crowdsourcing models, whereby firms start to delegate supply chain operations activities to a mass of actors in the marketplace, have grown drastically in recent years. 85% of the top global brands have reported to use crowdsourcing in the last ten year with top names such as Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and Nestle. These emergent business models, however, have remained unexplored in extant SCM literature. Drawing on various theoretical underpinnings, this dissertation aims to investigate and develop a holistic understanding of the importance and impacts of crowdsourcing in SCM from multiple perspectives. Three individual studies implementing a range of methodological approaches …

Supply Market Analysis: The Moderating Effect Of Social Networking On Cost Reduction, Adam Cockrell
College of Business Theses and Dissertations
As organizations look for more efficient ways to grow and optimize their supplier network to meet demands, the sourcing process must be streamlined through social networking. Kraljic’s (1983) purchasing portfolio approach argues that different types of purchases need different sourcing strategies. This study extends beyond this strategy by introducing a novel approach of social networking as a mechanism to amplify cost reduction. Through the theoretical underpinning of Transaction Cost Theory, this study builds upon the use of social networking to establish the foundation for future research in this area. In this study, existing and former Purchasing Managers (Sourcing Managers, Procurement …

The Contagion Of Lean Inventory Management In The Supply Chain, Kennedy Green
Supply Chain Management Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study examines the impact of buyer-supplier relationship age and industry similarity on the effect of buyer inventory leanness on supplier inventory leanness. While previous literature has studied the relationship between buyer inventory leanness and supplier inventory leanness, there has not been a large focus on the external relationship characteristics that influence this relationship. This study hypothesizes that buyer-supplier relationship age and similarity increase the effect of buyer inventory leanness on supplier inventory leanness. With data from buyer-supplier observations in different U.S. industries from 2008 to 2015, regression was used to measure the inventory leanness of each supplier and year. …
