Teens' Use Of Traditional Media And The Internet, Carrie La Ferle, Steven M. Edwards, We-Na Lee May 2000

Teens' Use Of Traditional Media And The Internet, Carrie La Ferle, Steven M. Edwards, We-Na Lee

Temerlin Advertising Institute Research

As the teen market segment expands and spending power increases, advertisers are cognizant of the importance in understanding traditional and emerging media trends in reaching this new generation of consumers. Increasing penetration of the internet at home and at school encouraged the authors to examine teens' relationships with media. Time allocation across media and the needs fulfilled by each medium were investigated. The study further explored how the internet, given its ability for two-way communication, stacks-up against interpersonal communication sources. Influences of gender and home access to the internet were analyzed, as were the methods teens use to learn about …

Pb1648-Considering An Agritainment Enterprise In Tennessee, The University Of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service

Marketing, Finances and Value-Added Agriculture

Agritainment (agritourism and entertainment farming enterprises) has an extensive history in the United States. Farm-related recreation and tourism can be traced back to the late 1800s, when families visited farming relatives in an attempt to escape from the city’s summer heat. Visiting the country became even more popular with the widespread use of the automobile in the 1920s. Rural recreation gained interest again in the 1930s and 1940s by folks seeking an escape from the stresses of the Great Depression and World War II. These demands for rural recreation led to widespread interest in horseback riding, farm petting zoos and …

From Market Driven To Market Driving, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa Scheer, Philip Kotler Apr 2000

From Market Driven To Market Driving, Nirmalya Kumar, Lisa Scheer, Philip Kotler

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Firms are constantly exhorted to become more market driven. However, our study of 25 pioneering companies (e.g. Body Shop, IKEA, Tetra Pak) whose success has been based on radical business innovation indicates that such companies are better described as market driving. While market driven processes are excellent in generating incremental innovation, they rarely produce the type of radical innovation which underlies market driving companies. Market driving companies, who are generally new entrants into an industry, gain a more sustainable competitive advantage by delivering a leap in customer value through a unique business system. Market driving strategies entail high risk, but …

Throughout its history the IMSA Fund for Advancement of Education Board of Directors has worked hard to connect the vision, talents and ideas of the private sector with those in education to produce meaningful and measurable results. Foreign Market Entry Strategies Of Japanese Mncs, Charles R. Taylor, Shaoming Zou, Gregory E. Osland Jan 2000

Foreign Market Entry Strategies Of Japanese Mncs, Charles R. Taylor, Shaoming Zou, Gregory E. Osland

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

While much prior research has focused on Japanese multi‐national corporations’ (MNCs) marketing strategies, little is known about the factors that influence Japanese MNCs’ foreign market entry mode choice. In this study, a survey of Japanese MNCs is conducted in order to assess the factors that are the most influential in the foreign market entry decisions of Japanese MNCs. Using bargaining power theory, eight factors are identified in the study. The findings indicate that five of the eight factors (stake of the host country, need for local contribution, riskiness of the host country, resource commitment, and host government restrictions) are significant …

Target Marketing Can Help Attract City Residents, Robert E. Lang, James W. Hughes, Karen A. Danielsen Jan 2000

Target Marketing Can Help Attract City Residents, Robert E. Lang, James W. Hughes, Karen A. Danielsen

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications

While suburban growth continues, city living is regaining popularity. It is common knowledge that urban neighborhoods often attract young, single professionals, but a more precise identification of potential city dwellers could help cities understand and develop their comparative advantages. Now, perhaps more than ever, cities need to know which people want to live in them and how their vision of urban life may be accommodated by public policy.

A common concern expressed among urban mayors is that the quality of their city services, especially schools, stacks up poorly against that of most suburbs. Improving public education is often cited as …

National Irish Bank: Coping With A Crisis And Beyond, Gerard Mortimer Jan 2000

National Irish Bank: Coping With A Crisis And Beyond, Gerard Mortimer

Case studies

As March 1998 drew to a close, management at National Irish Bank (NIB) would have been forgiven for believing that the bank’s situation could not get any worse. The bank had just issued a robust defence of its position in relation to an off shore bond scheme which had been the subject of much media and political debate for the previous two months. In particular, it had severely criticised RTE, the state owned television and radio corporation, and the two RTE journalists who had broken and dominated the story.

Superquinn Alive And Kicking: An Illustration Of Innovation In The Irish Grocery Market, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox

Conference proceedings

Superquinn is one of Ireland’s most successful indigenous retailers operating in an intensely competitive grocery market. Despite the arrival of large overseas retailers and an increased level of acquisition and alliance activity, it has survived and thrived. The company attributes its success to its innovation strategy. The practice of innovation now permeates all facets and functions of the Irish grocery sector and consequently is a pre-requisite for maintaining competitive advantage and ensuring business success. This paper illustrates many Superquinn innovations, and relates its strategy to themes within innovation literature. Based on an in-depth interview with its managing director, Feargal Quinn, …

Browsers Beware: Avoiding Legal Entanglements On The Internet, Michael Zugelder, Theresa Flaherty, James Johnson Jan 2000

Browsers Beware: Avoiding Legal Entanglements On The Internet, Michael Zugelder, Theresa Flaherty, James Johnson

Finance Faculty Publications

When Chicago resident David Loundy ordered a compact disk on the Internet from a British Web site, he received an e-mail confirming his order. Loundy expected to pay the advertised price of £8.99, or about $14. When he was subsequently charged £12.99, Loundy was incensed. He argued that he had accepted the set price of £8.99 and insisted that he pay no more for the disk. But when Loundy filed suit in England under the Consumer Protection Act of 1987, he was told that the Act did not apply to him because, under English common law, the place of the …

Euroclicking And The Irish Sme: Prepared For E-Commerce And The Single Currency, Pierre Mcdonagh, Andrea Prothero Jan 2000

Euroclicking And The Irish Sme: Prepared For E-Commerce And The Single Currency, Pierre Mcdonagh, Andrea Prothero

Articles

There is much technological hype (see Gates, 1999) as to the consequences of operating within cyberspace (Gibson, 1994) in an e-commerce capacity, at a time of operationalising European economic union within "Euroland". Debates centre on the need to theorise cyberspace (Besser, 1995) and the individualisation offered from organisations in serving e-customers, both from business to business to consumer perspectives. There is however, limited investigation as to how small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are preparing for this electronic or euro transmogrification. This article seeks to redress this by providing insight into these issues and draws upon an empirical analysis of …

Are Some Comparative Nutrition Claims Misleading? The Role Of Nutrition Knowledge, Ad Claim Type And Disclosure Conditions, J. Craig Andrews, Scot Burton, Richard G. Netemeyer Jan 2000

Are Some Comparative Nutrition Claims Misleading? The Role Of Nutrition Knowledge, Ad Claim Type And Disclosure Conditions, J. Craig Andrews, Scot Burton, Richard G. Netemeyer

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

As the regulator of all national food advertising, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has expressed concern that consumers may be misled by certain comparative nutrient content claims in advertising. To help examine this issue, primary food shoppers were recruited and interviewed in three U.S. markets according to generally accepted procedures for advertising copy tests. The study employs a 2 (ad claim type) x 2 (nutrition knowledge) x 4 (disclosure type) between-subjects design using manipulated print advertisements. Misleading generalizations for absolute levels of sodium content beyond that of control ads are found for both specific and general nutrient content claims from …
