Women’S Equality In Utah: Why Utah Is Ranked As The Worst State, And What Can Be Done, Susan R. Madsen, Greg P. Madsen

For the fourth year in a row, WalletHub has named Utah as the worst state in the nation for women’s equality in their report “2021’s Best & Worst States for Women’s Equality,” released August 23, 2021. To ascertain where women receive the most equal treatment, WalletHub’s analysis compared the 50 states across 17 key indicators of women’s equality. The indicators ranged from the gap between the number of female and male executives, to the disparity in unemployment rates for women and men, to gender differences in education and health.

Unpaid work, including childcare, eldercare, housework, and other tasks, is vitally important to the creation of strong families, communities, and nations; in fact, such domestic work has been called “the work that makes all other work possible.” According to the McKinsey Global Institute, the monetary value of women’s unpaid work is estimated to be $10 trillion each year, and women worldwide spend a significantly larger portion of their time than men performing this critical work. This happens for many reasons, including personal values and choices, cultural and social norms, unconscious biases, and specific economic and employment considerations. The global average …

In 2014, the Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) released four research and policy briefs on the status of women in Utah politics, education, nonprofits, and business. These were initially prompted by the Center for American Progress report titled “The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation” that ranked Utah last in terms of women being in positions of decision making and leadership. The Center for American Progress recently released a report titled, “The State of Women in America: A 50-State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation.” This September 2013 document ranked Utah last in terms of women being in positions of decision making and leadership. The focus was on both the percentage of women in elected office (state and national levels) and also women holding private sector management positions, but it did not provide the depth needed to fully understand the issue. Utah leaders created a big goal: 66% of Utah’s population will have postsecondary degrees or vocational certificates by the year 2020. This goal is based on a report from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce that projected Utah’s economy will need 66% of its population with some form of postsecondary education by 2018 to remain competitive. Currently, 38.3% of Utahns hold associate degrees or higher. This baseline underscores the urgency of working toward the 66% goal. Figure 1 highlights the current gap in educational attainment.
