Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The current dissertation is designed to contribute to our understanding of anti-consumers and their behaviors. Although past literature on anti-consumers gets attention from researchers and marketers, it lacks a deeper understanding of who and how anti-consumers behave societally and ideologically against targeted companies. Given this lack of understanding of anti-consumers, this dissertation conceptualizes anti-consumers, develops anti-consumer measurements, tests marketing strategies to attenuate their behaviors, and adds additional type of anti-consumption behavior, switching behavior, for marketers to maximize profits. The first essay develops a typology of anti-consumers by drawing on the literature on political ideology and self-construal. The essay suggests that …

During the COVID-19, many restaurants were forced to adopt online food delivery platforms such as Door Dash, Uber Eats to serve their clientele. In this dissertation, I examine the following research question: what challenges and benefits did restaurant managers consider to adopt online food delivery platforms during the COVID-19 pandemic? To answer this question, I present three essays. In the first essay, I reviewed the existing academic and practitioner literature on the research context, identified the major players in the food delivery industry, and summarized the challenges that restaurants faced during the pandemic. In the second essay, I identified what …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Dissertation topic that I have chosen to study places both a prominent topic currently making waves in marketing with the field of marketing that has quickly become my specialty and my focus of research going forward. I have chosen to study green and sustainable measures that organizations currently put into practice along with how those sustainable initiatives affect the sales and revenue of that organization. The context of the study is in business-to-business (B2B). Specifically, this current research takes place in a new context that has seldom seen research in the current decade, as most of the research on …

The Augmenting Effects Of Artificial Intelligence On Marketing Performance, Jing Chen
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study explores the antecedents and consequences of firm's artificial intelligence (AI) adoption. Based on technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework and institutional theory, I propose that technological opportunism, top management support, customer orientation, and normative pressure are the main antecedents lead to firm's AI adoption. According to firm's different strategic types, this study added that prospectors are most likely to adopt AI, followed that analyzers, defenders, and reactors. In addition, enlightened by dynamic capability theory, I further propose that the intensity of AI adoption will enhance firm's marketing performance through improved dynamic selling capability, dynamic pricing capability, dynamic new product development capability, …
Fear Of Missing Out: Scale Development And Impact On Brand Loyalty, Zhuofan Zhang
Fear Of Missing Out: Scale Development And Impact On Brand Loyalty, Zhuofan Zhang
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The trend on experiential marketing has propelled a new wave of studies examining the underlying motivations of individual's desire for experiential consumption: keeping updated with new trends, trying new brands, spending on experiential products, or seeking new brand experiences. Some authors contend that individuals' desire for new experiences derives from a concept called Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). Although the term FoMO is gaining attention in the social media literature, there is little conceptual and empirical research exists on the topic. In this Dissertation, I attempt to fill this gap by conceptualizing, defining, and measuring the construct. In addition, I …

Corporate Sponsorship And The Consumer Socialization Of African American Women Athletes: A Qualitative Study, Tahla Monique Wade
Corporate Sponsorship And The Consumer Socialization Of African American Women Athletes: A Qualitative Study, Tahla Monique Wade
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
African-American consumption is a unique feature of the American consumer market. A characteristic of African American consumers is their participation in conspicuous consumption. A look into the sociological concept of consumer socialization can drive insight to what initiates purchases of this group. However, this is not studied as an evolving process. Over time, individuals may encounter several new influences that affect their consumer socialization and purchase behavior, including the possibility of corporate sponsorship. To explore this evolution, I examine if corporate sponsorships affect the consumer socialization of African-American women collegiate athletes. Fifteen NCAA Division I African-American women athletes from a …

The goal of this Dissertation is to contribute to our understanding of relative importance of different information sources that consumers use to guide their purchasing behavior. Specifically, this work aims to model the product characteristics affecting the importance of each information source to consumers as they seek to purchase a given product. Although the extant literature has examined this topic, the efforts have not been cohesive and a comprehensive model of the phenomenon has yet to be developed, limiting our understanding of the topic. Gaining insight into the effects of product characteristics on the importance of different sources of information …

Instilling Positive Beliefs About Organ Donation: An Information Processing Approach, Gerardo Jose Moreira
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The number of those seeking a kidney donation in the United States continues to increase while the number of donors is not growing at the same rate (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services USDHHS, 2010). The lack of donations is more prevalent in low health literate communities which suffer from misinformation and ultimately negative beliefs toward organ donation. Thus, it is important to understand how marketing efforts can effectively change individuals' beliefs about organ donation.
Drawing on the Self-Determination Theory and Schema Theory, I proposed that the effectiveness of health education programs, which is to motivate individuals to be …

Three Essays On Big Data Analytics, Traditional Marketing Analytics, Knowledge Discovery, And New Product Performance, Zhenning Xu
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In recent years, companies have become aggressive in investing in Big Data Analytics (BDA) for marketing purposes, particularly new product development. One of the basic features of BDA is its promise in delivering automated recommendations or knowledge. For this reason, companies attempt to ascertain if BDA can improve new product performance beyond what Traditional Marketing Analytics (TMA) can.
The overarching question is whether different combinations (BDA and TMA in different levels) of analytics capabilities are able to generate different kinds of knowledge for Knowledge and Information Fusion that could improve new product performance. The aim of this study is to …

Beneath The Kiss: Unearthing The Ideological Underpinnings Of Kay Jewelers Advertisements, Chelsea Nedlyn Hill
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Advertising is a frequently used influential and persuasive means of communication, such as Kay Jewelers, a corporation whose advertising methods have been superficially appealing to a female audience. However, this study sought to investigate the ideological underpinnings associated with Kay Jewelers advertisements, employing an ideological criticism to argue through feminist theory that Kay Jewelers utilizes key elements of heteronormative love as a means to persuade and influence men to purchase their jewelry products. Through this underpinning of heteronormative romance, Kay Jewelers emphasizes the notion that an artifact, like a piece of jewelry, is necessary in order to properly express …

The Big [Motion] Picture: Analyzing The Factors Affecting The International Motion Picture Industry, Dalila Salazar
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The motion picture industry is one of the largest private sector employers in the United States, supporting 1.9 million jobs, and providing its workforce approximately $104 billion in total wages in 2011 (Motion Picture Association of America, 2012b). With U.S. films distributed in over 140 countries, not only is the industry successful domestically, it is one of the country's leading exports, reaping more than $23.9 billion in 2012 (Motion Picture Association of America, 2012a). Despite the importance of the global marketplace, we know very little about the factors that influence the success of movies internationally. My study partially addresses this …
The Role Of Social Norms In Consumers' Evaluations Of Brands From Emerging Countries, Shuang Yang
The Role Of Social Norms In Consumers' Evaluations Of Brands From Emerging Countries, Shuang Yang
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In prior studies, the effects of country of origin (COO) on purchase intention have been explained by signaling theory, the elaboration likelihood model and categorization theory. However, none of these theories explains the role social norms play in COO effects. Applying the theory of reasoned action (TRA), this study proposes that COO influences purchase intention through attitudes and social norms. This proposed model explains the joint effect of quality perceptions, consumer animosity, and perceived social pressure on purchase intention. The moderation effect of collectivism/individualism culture is also tested.
The research findings support the proposed model. Specifically, the results suggest that …

Supply Chain Management: Impact Of Customer Relationship Marketing On Performance Under Cooperation And Competition Strategies, Maria Eugenia Barua
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The dissertation investigation proposes a modified supply chain management model that is grounded on marketing theory and the concept of production sharing. Specifically, the model challenges the traditional cooperation-conflict continuum of strategic marketing management with a new managerial approach based on a cooperation-competition continuum. I investigate the significance of the new model in explaining behaviors in the supply chain management and its performance. In addition, I investigate whether the proposed managerial continuum (cooperation-competition) is consistent with other behaviors including power, conflict, trust, and customer relationship marketing such that coordination and supply chain performance is enhanced.
The data collection from manufacturers, …
