Ralph E. McKinney
The relatively recent appearance of Internet-based transactions necessitated the develop of digital forms of payment. These payments have evolved into various forms, including digital currency. This paper discusses the regulatory authority and/or lack of authority, of the sovereign States of the United States to regulate the counterfeiting of financial instruments used as currency, including digital currency. Federal and Foreign (non-U.S.) currencies are explicitly examined. Some digital currencies are not regulated or authorized specifically by a government. Can a currency without formal codification from a government be regulated by a State? As financial transactions have shifted historically from various governments' legal …

Road Rescue Implements A Continuous Process Improvement Framework, John Olson, Paul Savory
Road Rescue Implements A Continuous Process Improvement Framework, John Olson, Paul Savory
John Olson
Continuous improvement programs traditionally focus on making small incremental improvements to a system. Unfortunately, their success can be limited due to the rapid changing environment within which most small companies operate. Improvement efforts should be flexible enough to capitalize on incremental and radical changes to a system. This paper presents a case analysis of how Road Rescue, an ambulance manufacturer, uses a continuous improvement framework to capitalize on both radical and incremental improvement opportunities. Results include a 10% increase in throughput, reduced cycle time of 44%, increased customer satisfaction, and higher quality.

Information Differences Between Closed-Ended And Open-Ended Survey Questions For High-Technology Products, William Bleuel
Information Differences Between Closed-Ended And Open-Ended Survey Questions For High-Technology Products, William Bleuel
William H. Bleuel
Many businesses collect survey data that has two dimensions of satisfaction; namely, quantitative scores to specific questions (closed-ended) and specific comments also associated with the same questions (open-ended). The statistical evaluation from the dimension of quantitative responses is easily tabulated and subject to statistical analysis; however, the analysis and presentation of the comments usually consist of no more than tabulated Pareto charts. While there is software available to extract and summarize the comments, it is rarely performed on an ongoing basis. The concern voiced most often is the content of the comments contain information that may not be contained in …

Cross-Cultural Customer Satisfaction Of High Technology Companies In China, India, And Japan, William Bleuel, Darrol Stanley
William H. Bleuel
Customer satisfaction has become a very important aspect of business management in the high technology market. Companies that provide products and services world-wide often are concerned that customer satisfaction may be impacted by cultural differences. This study examines measures of customer satisfaction in China, India and Japan to determine whether or not there is a difference in satisfaction scores for field service, depot repair and help desk. The statistical results at a 5% confidence level indicate there is a difference in customer perception in all service support areas. The results clearly indicate that companies need to understand these differences in …
The Effects Of Schema Congruity On Consumer Response To Celebrity Advertising, Tracy Harmon-Kizer
The Effects Of Schema Congruity On Consumer Response To Celebrity Advertising, Tracy Harmon-Kizer
Tracy R. Harmon-Kizer Ph.D.
The trend of celebrity-branded products is on the rise, creating a new domain in which to explore the match-up hypothesis. Moving beyond the celebrity as an endorser, but rather, a brand promoting a brand extension, this article examines how perceived congruence between a celebrity's image and the brand image of products they have developed is related to attitudinal and behavioral measures of advertising effectiveness. Employing a 2 × 3 full factorial design, congruence between the celebrity's image and the brand's image was varied (less vs. more congruent), along with the use of the celebrity's image (present, absent, non-celebrity models) to …

The Impact Of Attitudinal Ambivalence On Weight Loss Decisions: Consequences And Mitigating Factors, Bui My, Courtney Droms, Georgiana Cracium
Courtney M. Droms
This research takes a new look at individuals' attitudes and intentions towards losing weight. Study 1 examines the relationship among those interested in losing weight and individual self-evaluative ambivalence on attitude towards trying to achieve a weight loss goal and the intentions to achieve the weight loss goal. For Study 2, a between-subjects experimental design, where attitudinal ambivalence and prior outcome feedback were manipulated and self-efficacy was measured, is conducted to examine attitude towards eating healthier and intention to change eating behaviours. Findings across the two studies show that attitudinal ambivalence about the self and the individual's abilities and motivation …
An Empirical Investigation Of Voluntary Non-Ifrs Earnings Reporting During The Recent Financial Crisis : Australian Evidence, Elisabeth Sinnewe
An Empirical Investigation Of Voluntary Non-Ifrs Earnings Reporting During The Recent Financial Crisis : Australian Evidence, Elisabeth Sinnewe
Dr Elisabeth Sinnewe
This study examines how the financial crisis affected the reporting choice of and market reaction to earnings that are different from the profit firms report on their income statement under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). These non-IFRS earnings reflect management’s subjective of view of earnings. By observing management’s reporting choices and investors’ reaction in Australia prior to, during, and after the financial crisis, this study shows a distinctive effect of the economic condition on reporting non-IFRS earnings. As such, this study contributes to the limited attention hypothesis suggesting that information-equivalent disclosure is perceived as value relevant by management and investors …

Transformational Leadership In China: The Role Of Trust And Harmony, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau
Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau
Transformational leadership attracted a significant amount of scholarly attention in the past few decades. This study is designed to develop an effective transformational leadership model that works in the Chinese context. A model is proposed to clarify the mediating effects of trust and harmony on the relationship between transformational leadership and its effectiveness. The model provides a new perspective on leadership in the Chinese context that is ignored in the Western leadership literature. It also offers a clearer understanding of how best transformational leadership practice combines with traditional Chinese wisdom to do a better job in accounting for the leader-follower …

Success Mass Customization: The Role Of Market Segment Favorableness, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau
Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau
Mass customization (MC) emerged as a new paradigm that shifted from mass production. It achieves both volume and cost efficiency of mass production and customization capabilities at the same time. The challenge for manufacturing managers is to find ways to cope with the market and increase product variety through MC without affecting lead-time, cost or quality. Based on the previous literature review, a conceptual summary of MC is discussed. According to the conceptual summary, a model is built to discuss how each of the elements associated with MC contributes to improved firm performance. It further proposed that the market segment …
The Role Of Organizational Learning Capabilities In Strategic Alliances, Wai Lau
The Role Of Organizational Learning Capabilities In Strategic Alliances, Wai Lau
Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau
Recent studies on strategic alliance show great interest on how firms develop alliance capabilities to achieve alliance success. This study examines the relationship between organizational learning capabilities and alliance performance. The concept of organizational learning capabilities in this study is developed comprising training availability, technical expertise, and alliance experience. It proposes that a greater alliance learning capability is positively related to alliance goal achievement. The research further investigates how the inter- and intra-firm mechanism, the average level of technical expertise and alliance experience, and the gap of technical expertise and alliance experience between the partners impact alliance objectives.

Strategic Dependence On The It Resource And Outsourcing: A Test Of The Strategic Control Model, Detmar Straub, Peter Weill, Kathy Schwaig
Kathy S Schwaig
Using resource dependency theory (RDT), this research analyzes how organizations control their information technology resources to improve organizational performance. According to RDT, organizations must manage their dependency on external organizations and limit external dependencies when resources are considered critical. The current study proposes and tests a portion of a Strategic Control Model positing that managers seek to control important, strategic resources in order to create value for the firm and to avoid dependency on external entities. Utilizing a research design that captured extensive quantitative data on the control of IT functions and services, the research team gathered 5 years of …

Determination Of Number Of Dedicated Or's And Supporting Pricing Mechanisms For Emergent Surgeries, Leo Macdonald, Jomon Aliyas Paul
Determination Of Number Of Dedicated Or's And Supporting Pricing Mechanisms For Emergent Surgeries, Leo Macdonald, Jomon Aliyas Paul
Jomon Aliyas Paul
Inefficient management of emergent surgeries in hospitals can, in part, be attributed to a lack of rigorous analysis appropriate to capturing the underlying uncertainties inherent to this process and a pricing mechanism to ensure its financial viability. We develop a non-preemptive multi-priority queueing model that optimally manages emergent surgeries and supports the resource allocation decision-making process. Specifically, we utilize queueing and discrete event simulation to develop empirical models for determining the required number of emergent operating rooms for a hospital surgical department. We also present algorithms that estimate the appropriate pricing for patient surgeries differentiated by priority level given the …

Location-Allocation Planning Of Stockpiles For Effective Disaster Mitigation, Jomon Aliyas Paul, Govind Hariharan
Jomon Aliyas Paul
In the existing framework for receiving and allocating Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) assistance, there are three noticeable delays: the delay by the state in requesting federal assets, the delay in the federal process which releases assets only upon the declaration of a disaster and lastly the time it takes to reach supplies rapidly from the SNS stockpile to where it is needed. The most efficient disaster preparedness plan is one that addresses all three delays taking into account the unique nature of each disaster. In this paper, we propose appropriate changes to the existing framework to address the first two …
Modeling The Effects Of Port Disasters, Jomon Aliyas Paul, Michael Maloni
Modeling The Effects Of Port Disasters, Jomon Aliyas Paul, Michael Maloni
Jomon Aliyas Paul
Weather or terrorism-related disasters at seaports can lead to significant economic losses from vessel and cargo delays. In times of such disasters, port capacities and optimal shipment routings would change rapidly, requiring near real-time analyses for planning response operations. To address this challenge, we offer a decision support system to help port networks analyze disaster response scenarios. As part of the model, an algorithm routes arriving ships to ports to optimize the use of network capacity with respect to ocean and inland transportation, port and inventory capital costs. To reflect changing port congestion conditions, port capacities are dynamically updated in …

Achieving Succession Planning And Implementation: One Healthcare Network's Story, Terry Capuano, Richard Mackenzie
Terry A Capuano MBA, MSN, RN, FACHE, NE-BC
Frequent transitions in leadership can cause inefficiency, inconsistency, and lack of alignment with priorities and strategy. Retaining management talent and collaboratively planning their succession can help ensure organizational survival. Succession planning, in healthcare and other industries, addresses some of these concerns; however, there is a dearth of descriptive articles emphasizing "how to." This article demonstrates one healthcare network's comprehensive system for succession planning and implementation. Leaders looking to plan their human resource processes for organizational sustainability would be able to emulate and adapt practices for their networks.
