This research contributes to the literature on the antecedents of information systems (IS) use. Drawing from the management control systems literature, we argue that organizational performance is an important antecedent of IS use. Specifically, we argue that periods of performance decline are followed by increased use of decision support systems as managers try to diagnose the causes of performance decline. This offers an alternative perspective to prior literature that has primarily hypothesized a positive effect of IS use on organizational performance. Longitudinal data collected from a healthcare organization for a 5-year period is analyzed using distributed lag models. As hypothesized, …

Mohammed J Sarwar

The purpose of this treatise is to determine how information technology is affecting the usage of services in the academic library. The majority of the college students prefer to use the Web instead of frequenting the library. Librarians and educators are concerned that these students are developing poor research skills if they only use the internet for research. Many of them are not familiar with the best electronic resources. Librarians may have less reference work but they will need to offer instruction on using …

Senior management in contemporary graduate business education must respond are the trends that are leaving a marked impact on the traditional business models of business schools. Key stakeholders in the business education ecosystem, including the students, the corporate employers and the business schools themselves, demand more of graduate education in order that their respective careers flourish, future employees have the requisite skills and experience, and business education institutions survive. Mobile phones’ exponential growth is fuelling the emergence of mobile health (mHealth), thus contributing to healthcare services’ innovative transformation in developing countries. mHealth’s ubiquitous personalised capabilities obviate the access barriers and dismal performance of conventional systems, thus -therefore gaining popularity among patients. Researchers have focused on service quality – a vital element of service adoption – and sustainability. For mHealth to become a robust alternative, how patients perceive mHealth vis-à-vis conventional services must be understood. Comparative analysis studies between mHealth and conventional systems are scarce yet would contribute to theory and strengthen the antecedent phases to service quality, that is, …

Liquid Collaboration, Dariusz Jemielniak, Tomasz Raburski

Dariusz Jemielniak

In the chapter present the results of an analysis of the social organization of Wikipedia, the largest collaborative movement of humankind, based on the theoretical framework offered by Zygmunt Bauman. The development of info-communal approach is possible as a result of what we propose to call “liquid collaboration”, relying on short-term fragile interactions, non-personal and transient cooperation, all directly related to virtual and liquid identities. As hypothesized by Bauman, this mode of work and social interaction is also marked with peer control and organizational surveillance. MThrough Bauman’s conception of the moral social being, as well as free information movement and …
