Analyzing Unstructured Text Data: Using Latent Categorization To Identify Intellectual Communities In Information Systems, Kai R. Larsen, David E. Monarchi, Dirk S, Hovorka, Christopher N. Bailey

The Information Systems field is structured by the research topics emphasized by communities of journals. The Latent Categorization Method categorized and automatically named IS research topics in 14,510 abstracts from 65 Information Systems journals. These topics were clustered into seven intellectual communities based on publication patterns. The technique develops categories from the data itself, it is replicable, is relatively insensitive to the size of the text units, and it avoids many of the problems that frequently accompany human categorization. As such LCM provides a new approach to analyzing a wide array of textual data.

This chapter introduces the role of the knowledge gatekeeper as a mechanism by which knowledge is created and transferred in a networked environment. Knowledge creation and transfer are essential for building a knowledge based economy. The chapter considers obstacles that inhibit this process and argues that leading firms create a shared socio-cultural context that enables the condivision of tacit meanings and codification of knowledge. Leading firms act as gatekeepers of knowledge through the creation of shared virtual platforms. RFID-, Sensor- und Lokalisierungstechnologien werden die Abläufe im Facility Management künftig stark verändern. Angesichts der hohen Kosten des Vorort-Einsatzes eines Mitarbeiters und der verteilten Standorte von Immobilien bieten diese Technologien Immobilienbetreibern die Chance, ihre Kostenstrukturen durch hoch integrierte Abläufe zu optimieren und sich im Wettbewerb durch Zusatzleistungen zu differenzieren. Die Integration mobiler und ubiquitärer Technologien in bestehende Systemlandschaften erfordert jedoch die Implementierung zusätzlicher Infrastrukturkomponenten und Schnittstellen. This paper describes a new knowledge acquisition method using a generic design environment where context-sensitive knowledge is used to build specific DSS for rural business. Although standard knowledge acquisition methods have been applied in rural business applications, uptake remains low and familiar weaknesses such as obsolescence and brittleness apply. We describe a decision support system (DSS) building environment where contextual factors relevant to the end users are directly taken into consideration. Cellular networks and telecommunications bring major change to the way businesses are conducted. Mobility has become one of the main priorities for users and this has impacted on cellular networks and telecommunication operators (CNTOs). Abgestimmte Produktstammdaten bilden die Grundlage elektronischer Geschäftsbeziehungen zwischen Handels- und Industrieunternehmen. Obwohl Handel und Industrie sich schon vergleichsweise lange mit dem elektronischen Austausch von Produktdaten beschäftigen, konnten sich weder der EDI-basierte, bilaterale Stammdatenaustausch noch der multilaterale Ansatz über Datenpools durchsetzen. Seit Mitte 2004 verfolgt das Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) einen neuen Lösungsansatz, mit dem Ziel, einen m:n-fähigen elektronischen Produktstammdatenaustausch zu etablieren. Die Ankündigungen von führenden Handelsunternehmen wie WALMART, AHOLD oder TESCO sowie Konsumgüterherstellern wie NESTLÉ, PROCTER GAMBLE oder KRAFT FOODS schüren ebenso wiedie aktuelle Konsolidierung unter den Stammdatenpools die Erwartungen. This paper explores how assigning software developers the identity of “engineers” metes out specific assumptions about IT projects. To this end, the paper describes an alternative metaphor of programming as art, which is commonly used by the programmers interviewed. In addition, the discussion draws conclusions from the discrepancies between the two views as well as from the proposed metaphor, explaining organizational reluctance to aesthetical vocabulary. This paper discusses occupational identity—emphasizing the identity of programmers—using qualitative research methods. As such, it enriches the literature currently available on this profession.

This paper considers the programme validation arrangements in place in one half of the Irish higher education sector. It outlines how responsibility for programme validation can be safely delegated to Institutions within a robust overarching framework for quality assurance. It compares programme validation in Institutions with self awarding status with Institutions that have their programmes validated by a national Awarding agency. The paper concludes that when programme validation in Ireland and (potentially) across Europe is examined more closely, processes that appear to be very different on the surface can be quite similar in reality.
