FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research was conducted to examine the relationship between investment in intelligent systems resources and capabilities (based on artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms) and the effect on company performance. Despite existing research on the benefits of adopting intelligent systems, companies have been slow to adopt as there is lack of research on intelligent systems use cases that will increase firm performance. This research study used resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities (DCF) theory to investigate firms’ investment in intelligent systems resources that build intelligent systems capabilities and the association to organization performance dimensions, revenue and profits. To answer this …

Social Media And Public Discourse Participation In Restrictive Environments, Jobany J. Rico Nov 2021

Social Media And Public Discourse Participation In Restrictive Environments, Jobany J. Rico

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates citizens' use of social media to participate in public discourse (i.e., access, share, and comment on socio-political content) in restrictive environments: societies ruled by a hegemonic government where users face economic and infrastructure barriers to using digital technologies. Theoretical propositions are built inductively from an interpretive case study of how Cuban citizens use Twitter to participate in socio-political conversations. The case study resulted in the identification of nine affordances (i.e., action potentials) for participating in public discourse that Cubans perceive on Twitter. The findings also showed that the identified affordances enabled Cubans to achieve citizen goals: positive …

The Role Of Dispositional And Situational Factors In Assessment Of User Response To New It – A Coping Theory Perspective Of User Adaptation From It Implementation To Job Outcomes., Amin Shoja Jun 2021

The Role Of Dispositional And Situational Factors In Assessment Of User Response To New It – A Coping Theory Perspective Of User Adaptation From It Implementation To Job Outcomes., Amin Shoja

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

New IT-related disturbing events remain a significant challenge for organizations as individuals could perceive what is at stake for them as an opportunity or a threat. Furthermore, they assess the resources available while engaging in these situations. Therefore, it is essential to study the contextual and dispositional factors which affect specific adaptation behaviors that individuals undertake to cope with an IT and the antecedents and consequences of these appraisals. By utilizing the coping model of user adaptation, we theorize users' IT adaptation behaviors as a coping process performed by individuals and investigate their coping appraisals that could affect job outcomes. …

Perceiving Sociable Technology: Exploring The Role Of Anthropomorphism And Agency Perception On Human-Computer Interaction (Hci), Jose Pineda Feb 2021

Perceiving Sociable Technology: Exploring The Role Of Anthropomorphism And Agency Perception On Human-Computer Interaction (Hci), Jose Pineda

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the arrival of personal assistants and other AI-enabled autonomous technologies, social interactions with smart devices have become a part of our daily lives. Therefore, it becomes increasingly important to understand how these social interactions emerge, and why users appear to be influenced by them. For this reason, I explore questions on what the antecedents and consequences of this phenomenon, known as anthropomorphism, are as described in the extant literature from fields ranging from information systems to social neuroscience. I critically analyze those empirical studies directly measuring anthropomorphism and those referring to it without a corresponding measurement. Through a grounded …

Innovation Diffusion Theory And Social Embeddedness - A New Perspective, Xuan Tan Mar 2020

Innovation Diffusion Theory And Social Embeddedness - A New Perspective, Xuan Tan

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the impact of social embeddedness on the diffusion and adoption of innovations. Historically, the primary factors influencing the adoption and diffusion of an innovation have been the perception of its’ relative advantage to other technologies, its’ perceived compatibility to previous innovations, and the degree to which the innovation is perceived to be difficult to use or understand (complexity). The additional characteristics of observability and trialability have been shown to be less important. However, with the effect of social embeddedness, this situation has likely changed. Trialability and observability, may outweigh the importance of the first three characteristics. …

Information Delivery, User Decision Approach, And Choice Environment: Examining The Effectiveness Of Non-Compensatory And Customization-Based Online Decision Support., Malgorzata Kolotylo Jun 2019

Information Delivery, User Decision Approach, And Choice Environment: Examining The Effectiveness Of Non-Compensatory And Customization-Based Online Decision Support., Malgorzata Kolotylo

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Decision support research has largely focused on the mechanics of tool design, with less attention paid to the way the alternatives are presented to the user - that is, the format of the output, how the decision tool design can play a role in it, and the output content (characteristics). Furthermore, little research has examined specific decision contexts and user’s cognitive aspects pertinent to the choice task, and their role during an online purchase. This study addresses these issues by investigating the impact of output format and content of a non-compensatory (NC) tool and a customization-based tool on user’s decision …

Multiple Criteria Decision Models For Nurse-Patient Assignment: Balancing Workload And Continuity Of Care, Haoqiang Jiang Jun 2019

Multiple Criteria Decision Models For Nurse-Patient Assignment: Balancing Workload And Continuity Of Care, Haoqiang Jiang

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Continuity of care is critical for delivering high-quality care, yet has seldom been considered in models supporting nurse-patient assignment decisions within inpatient units. Research in the nursing literature suggests that assigning nurses to patients they have cared for previously can help reduce care-related error rates and increase patient satisfaction. However, it is also essential to ensure that patient workloads are allocated to nursing staff in a balanced manner to avoid overwork and burnout.

This study investigates the tradeoffs associated with the assignment of patients to nurses in inpatient settings under the dual objective of maximizing continuity of care and minimizing …

Relevance Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: Design Principles For The Extraction Of Context-Aware Information, Arturo Castellanos Jul 2016

Relevance Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: Design Principles For The Extraction Of Context-Aware Information, Arturo Castellanos

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the1970s many approaches of representing domains have been suggested. Each approach maintains the assumption that the information about the objects represented in the Information System (IS) is specified and verified by domain experts and potential users. Yet, as more IS are developed to support a larger diversity of users such as customers, suppliers, and members of the general public (such as many multi-user online systems), analysts can no longer rely on a stable single group of people for complete specification of domains –to the extent that prior research has questioned the efficacy of conceptual modeling in these heterogeneous settings. …
