At the time of this report (January 2018) market prices have dropped to near $2.00 per pound for bulk syrup and organic premiums have declined modestly. The current US bulk market prices have de-coupled from an exact calculation of the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers (FPAQ) pricing levels adjusted for US-Canadian currency exchange rates. Several public presentations from industry leaders at VT Maple Conferences have confirmed that markets continue to grow but that there is short term surplus syrup inventory following strong 2016 and 2017 crop years. To compete with larger, more efficient dairy farms, build resilience against increasingly volatile milk prices, and increase farm income, farms in traditional dairy states such as New York, Wisconsin, and Vermont, have been forced to expand their herds and increase production. Many dairy farmers do not have formal training in human resources management, and find the transition to a larger, non-family workforce to be challenging. Do Labels Make A Difference: Estimating The Impacts Of Vermont’S Gmo Labeling Law On Perceptions And Prices, Orest V. Pazuniak

Vermont is the first and only state in the US to establish mandatory labels for food containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This thesis investigates the impact of the mandatory labeling law as it relates to changes in prices, quantities sold, and opinions of GMOs. First, grocery store scanner data from Vermont and Oregon are compared using triple difference (difference-in-difference-in-difference) models. Next, Vermont, Oregon, and Colorado survey response data are compared using difference-in-difference models. The findings reveal that there is a general price premium for non-GMO goods of $0.05/oz across all states and times, that mandatory labeling laws do not result …
