Revisiting Strategy In A Time Of Crisis, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The season of upheaval brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic is a critical occasion for libraries to revisit their organizational strategies. Strategy includes two complementary dimensions: alignment with the environment and the pursuit of competitive advantage. Rapid changes in the environment call for practicing strategic thinking iteratively rather than engaging in a fixed rhythm of multi-year planning. An effective library strategy displays four key attributes: (1) It responds to the concerns of diverse stakeholders. (2) It is flexible enough to adapt to emerging conditions. (3) It enacts organizational mission but can also help to reshape it. (4) It integrates with …

Business Models For Post-Crisis Information Ecosystems, Antje Mays

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

Since early 2020, the global COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted activity across business, education, research, and communities. Public health safety precautions have forced drastic reductions in economic and educational activity, resulting in widespread economic uncertainty and sizeable budget cuts. With library budgets already declining since the 2001-2002 recession following the dotcom crash and more steeply since the 2007-2009 Great Recession spawned by the financial crash, the pandemic has accelerated trends that were already underway. Libraries’ reduced purchasing power places the information ecosystem at risk of contraction in the race to contain costs. While economic contexts and publishing forms have changed considerably. …

Academic libraries are increasingly becoming affected by rapid changes in information technology, competition from the private information sector and fear of losing the monopoly position. Academic libraries’ dilemma is evident, based on the declining support from parent institutions and declining use trends. In the face of stiff competition, their reaction has to be quick to preserve their place. Academic librarians cannot efficiently prepare for the future or position themselves until they create a balance between exploitation and exploration. To remain relevant, librarians must re-strategize by building ambidexterity into the library through competitive intelligence (CI). The article explores a structural approach …

Indonesia is one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. Food and beverage products originating from outside and within the country must be tested for halal. In 2019, the number of companies registering for product testing had increased compared to 2018. The achievement of increasing the number of products and companies is inversely proportional to providing halal product certificates. The decline in the number of recipients of product halal certificates is certainly a major problem in product marketing in areas where most of the population is Muslim. For this reason, the marketing of halal products requires good strategy and …

Knowledge Mapping, Intellectual Capital And Organizational Intelligence, Gautam Gogoi, Dr. Pranab Kr. Barooah

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Knowledge management initiatives rely on maps to locate internal knowledge, similar to how an explorer in the wilderness follows a map. Knowledge maps, like travel maps, are static. A knowledge map is a “snapshot in time” that helps businesses understand and organize knowledge assets. It's anything but an express model inside a business cycle of who has the information, where the information is found, and why it is significant. Perhaps the most well known strategies for recognizing information in associations is information planning. It can help chiefs to all the more likely comprehend the information stream inside the associations. Planning …
