Throughout the years there has been literature regarding the impacts of Chinese manufacturing on the United States economy. Much of the focus has been centered on macro-economic effects and not firm level impacts. Using trade exposure and data from publically traded manufacturing firms I provide an analysis of the potential effects of increased trade exposure in a highly competitive market. My research aims to measure the impacts of Chinese imports on United States manufacturing companies with low technological barriers to entry. The purpose of this paper to assess the ethical dilemmas that exist when American companies offshore manufacturing work to cheaper labor markets abroad through a utilitarian perspective. The paper will explain what offshoring is and what has driven American companies into engaging in this practice. Next, the criteria for the utilitarian assessment will be explained. After, I will examine the effects on the U.S labor force, U.S economy, and the foreign labor force through two case studies: the Bangladeshi apparel industry and the Mexican maquiladoras industry. Do Foreign Companies Pay Higher Wages Than Their Local Counterparts In Malaysian Manufacturing?, David Lim

This paper shows that foreign companies pay higher wages than their local counterparts in Malaysian manufacturing. Step-wise regression analysis shows that this is due to two factors. The first, and perhaps the more important, is the greater capital intensity of the production processes used by foreign companies. The second is their tendency to pay wages that they consider, or that are considered to be, commensurate with the wages that they pay in their home countries. This may be called the demonstration effect of wage remuneration in less developed countries.

The Influence Of The Electric Supply Industry On Economic Growth In Less Developed Countries, Edward Richard Bee

This study measures the impact that electrical outages have on manufacturing production in 135 less developed countries using stochastic frontier analysis and data from World Bank’s Investment Climate surveys. Outages of electricity, for firms with and without backup power sources, are the most frequently cited constraint on manufacturing growth in these surveys.

Outages are shown to reduce output below the production frontier by almost five percent in Africa and by a lower percentage in South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Middle East and North Africa. Production response to outages is quadratic in form. Outages also increase labor cost, reduce exports …

This senior thesis explores the impacts of employment in light export manufacturing on rural women in China. It first describes the neoclassical economist, feminist economist, and contemporary feminist points of view regarding the effect that manufacturing has specifically on rural women. It then includes a statistical analysis to analyze the empirical data surrounding this issue and draw a conclusion on whether or not light export manufacturing is beneficial for rural Chinese women.

The Effect Of Language Differences And National Culture On Operational Process Compliance, John V. Gray, Brett Massimino

With increasing frequency, firms are locating their operations in disparate countries with distinct national cultures and languages. This study develops and empirically tests hypotheses relating an operation's process compliance performance to (1) the presence of a language difference between the location of the operation and that of headquarters and (2) the national culture of the location of the operation and that of headquarters. Employing an international sample of pharmaceutical manufacturing plants located primarily in Western nations, the analysis reveals that a language difference between the location of a plant and the firm's headquarters is consistently related to decreased process compliance …
