Economic Growth In Haiti, Marc Arthur L. Barthelemy
Economic Growth In Haiti, Marc Arthur L. Barthelemy
Applied Economics Theses
Poverty is a persistent problem in Haiti, resulting in an abundance of famine and suffering for many. The root of poverty and the lack of economic growth in Haiti has been associated with political instability. From this perspective, this thesis investigates the relationship between political instability and economic growth within Haiti. In relation to the same, the question that is raised is “can economic growth promotes political stability?” This research is purposely designed to be qualitative to facilitate the investigation of the source of poverty and its relation to political instability. Case studies on South Korea and China have been …

The Effect Of Remittance Inflows To India: An Empirical Analysis, Justin Poisson
The Effect Of Remittance Inflows To India: An Empirical Analysis, Justin Poisson
Honors Theses and Capstones
This paper studies the relationship between remittance inflows and GDP in India. An empirical regression analysis is applied to India’s data to analyze the effect of remittance inflows to the level of GDP and GDP growth. Results show that remittance inflows have a positive and significant effect on the level of India’s GDP, and a positive but insignificant effect on GDP growth. Data used in this research come from the World Bank.
Selecting International Modes Of Entry And Expansion, Gregory E. Osland, Charles R. Taylor, Shaoming Zou
Selecting International Modes Of Entry And Expansion, Gregory E. Osland, Charles R. Taylor, Shaoming Zou
Gregory E. Osland
Selecting a mode for entering or expanding in a foreign market is a crucial strategic decision for an international firm. This article identifies and compares the most influential factors that affect the international modes of entry and expansion decisions of US and Japanese firms. Using mail surveys, this is one of the first studies on this subject to collect data from top executives in both Japan and the USA. Findings reveal that the Japanese are particularly sensitive to external risk and other target market factors. For Americans, company factors, such as international experience, appear to be most important when selecting …
Relational Ties In Emerging Markets: What Is Their Contribution To Sme Growth?, Natalya Totskaya
Relational Ties In Emerging Markets: What Is Their Contribution To Sme Growth?, Natalya Totskaya
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Prior studies argue that social capital is vital for firm growth. Adding to this line of research, this paper provides more evidence regarding the contribution of bonding and bridging social ties to various aspects of small-l and medium-sized enterprise (SME) development. Building on the original data from Russia, this paper investigates the effects of firm-internal and firm-external relational ties on SME performance and geographic expansion. The findings indicate that horizontal bridging ties facilitate specific strategies of SME growth. Thus, this paper supports prior research conducted in the Asian context, and allows for extending the outcomes of bonding and bridging social …
Trade Liberalisation And Growth: A Threshold Expectation, Rod Falvey, Neil Foster-Mcgregor, Ahmed Khalid
Trade Liberalisation And Growth: A Threshold Expectation, Rod Falvey, Neil Foster-Mcgregor, Ahmed Khalid

Openness and trade liberalisation variables are consistently estimated to have significant positive coefficients in panel growth regressions. Many arguments have been advanced as to why and how more open or liberalised economies might grow faster, but the specific channels this process uses have begun to be investigated only recently. We continue these efforts by including a variable identifying the date of trade liberalisation in a system of equations that captures the determinants of growth in per capita income. Four ‘channels’ are considered: capital formation, the share of government, the economy’s openness to trade and its price distortions. We include the …

Trade Liberalisation, Economic Crises And Growth, Rodney Falvey, Neil Foster, David Greenaway

Many economic reforms are undertaken at a time of economic crisis. But is this a good time for a country to undertake trade reform? In this paper we investigate whether an economic crisis at the time of trade liberalisation affects a country’s subsequent growth performance. We employ threshold regression techniques on five crisis indicators commonly used in the literature, to identify the relevant “crisis values” and to estimate the differential postliberalisation growth effects in the crisis and non-crisis regimes. We find that the magnitude of the acceleration in postliberalisation growth depends on the characteristics of the crisis. Although trade liberalisation …

The Reliability Of Chinese Economic Statistics, Lili Yu
The Reliability Of Chinese Economic Statistics, Lili Yu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
China's rapid economic growth over the past three decades has drawn attention from all over the world. The sources and reliability of the official statistics behind the tremendous growth have been the subject of heated debate among economists. This paper contributes to this data reliability debate by analyzing on the GDP statistics of China and seeks to establish whether or not the official data are valid.
This study begins with a review of the prominent research on the topic. The majority of these studies, reviewed in chapter two, point to a series of inherent contradictions in the official figures, which …

Many economic reforms are undertaken during an economic crisis, but is a crisis a good time to undertake trade reform? We investigate whether an economic crisis at the time of trade liberalization affects a country's subsequent growth performance. We employ threshold regression techniques on five crisis indicators to identify the "crisis values" and to estimate the differential growth effects in the crisis and non-crisis regimes. Although trade liberalization in both crisis and non-crisis periods raises subsequent growth, we find that an internal crisis implies a lower acceleration and an external crisis a higher acceleration relative to the non-crisis regime.
Untangling The Relationship Between New Venture Internationalization And Performance, Stephanie A. Fernhaber
Untangling The Relationship Between New Venture Internationalization And Performance, Stephanie A. Fernhaber
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
To help untangle the inconsistency in prior performance studies for new venture internationalization, the dynamic capabilities perspective is revisited to consider whether the relationship is more complex than previously assumed. While internationalization requires the reconfiguration of routines and resources, survivability is argued to peak at moderate levels of internationalization where the associated resources and risk is balanced between local and foreign markets. In contrast, sales growth is suggested to peak at either low or high levels of internationalization where a singular market focus and set of capabilities is being exploited. The results confirm that the level of new venture internationalization …
Examining Foreign Exchange Behaviour In Asia Pacific And Eastern European Emerging Countries, Catherine S. F. Ho, Mohamed Ariff
Examining Foreign Exchange Behaviour In Asia Pacific And Eastern European Emerging Countries, Catherine S. F. Ho, Mohamed Ariff
Mohamed Ariff
This paper reports new findings on exchange rate dynamics concerning whether non-parity fundamentals and parity factors affect exchange rates within a group of trade-related emerging countries: non-parity fundamentals suggested by economic theories have yet been systematically related to exchange rates. We use high- and low-frequency multi-country pooled time series panel data approach. The evidence that emerges from this paper is that non-parity factors are significant contributors to exchange rates. These new findings on other-than-parity fundamentals add to a richer understanding of exchange rate behaviour as well as clarifying why existing findings are mixed.

The Role Of Non-Parity Fundamentals In Exchange Rate Determination: Australia And The Asia Pacific Region, Mohamed Ariff, Catherine S. F. Ho

This paper extends the literature by looking at the contribution of non-parity variables after extracting the impact of parity variables on exchange rates of Australia and the Asia Pacific countries. Exchange rates are examined using high- and low-frequency multi-country panel time series data for a group of trade-related nations in the Asia Pacific, including Japan. Our findings suggest that exchange rate is affected by growth rate, and trade and capital flows: other less significant variables include sovereign debt; balance of payments; money supply; and trade openness. It also confirms that interest rate has significant effect on exchange rates while price …
Growth And Survival Of International Joint Ventures: An External-Internal Legitimacy Perspective, Jane W. Lu, Dean Xu
Growth And Survival Of International Joint Ventures: An External-Internal Legitimacy Perspective, Jane W. Lu, Dean Xu
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The authors examine the growth and survival of international joint ventures (IJVs) from a legitimacy perspective. In a sample of 291 Sino-Japanese joint ventures in China, they found that Chinese parent age, Chinese parent size, and IJV industry relatedness to either parent had a positive effect on IJV growth and/or survival. However, IJV industry relatedness to both parents led to lower rates of IJV growth and survival. The findings highlight the importance for IJVs to obtain both external and internal legitimacy, as well as the difficulties IJVs face in acquiring internal legitimacy from both parents simultaneously.
