Canadian Banks And Imperialism In The English-Speaking Caribbean, Tamanisha J. John
Canadian Banks And Imperialism In The English-Speaking Caribbean, Tamanisha J. John
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Canadian banks have been important components of an imperialist system since at least the 19th century. However, their long and rich history of operating as purely exploitative entities in the English-speaking Caribbean region is often overlooked— leading to many incomplete and conflicting narratives about Canada’s role within the global system. I argue that Canada is an imperial actor that exerts agency in supporting a Canadian banking oligopoly both within Canada and in the English-speaking Caribbean. Insufficient attention is given to these Canadian banks, especially considering the power they have wielded in the Caribbean over the centuries. By analyzing the …

Microfinance: Combating World Poverty One Small Business At A Time, Alison Basney
Microfinance: Combating World Poverty One Small Business At A Time, Alison Basney
Senior Honors Theses
Poverty is a major problem that reaches millions of people around the world. Although many organizations and individuals work daily to combat this, much of the work done to reduce poverty lacks sustainability and serves only to remedy to the effects of poverty, rather than create a solution to the causes of poverty. Microfinance can be very basically defined as the provision of banking to the impoverished who would not otherwise have access to these services. This purpose of this thesis is to show that microfinance is the ideal solution to the poverty problem by using research and evidence from …
Multinationals In Emerging Markets: A Test Case Of The Banking Industry In India, Havovi Joshi
Multinationals In Emerging Markets: A Test Case Of The Banking Industry In India, Havovi Joshi
Dissertations and Theses Collection
Multinational firms play a significant role in the world economy, accounting for over 30% of the world stock market value. In the past decade or two, these firms have demonstrated a renewed wave of interest in the Emerging Asian markets. This is not surprising, given the attractive demographics, growing middle class and leapfrogging technology of these markets. But the optimism of these western firms heading eastward often gets quickly subdued by the realisation that these emerging Asian markets are far more complex—or at the very least, different—than western ones. They are more volatile, there is frequently a lack of institutional …

Income Volatility Of Indonesian Banks After The Asian Financial Crisis, Barry Williams
Income Volatility Of Indonesian Banks After The Asian Financial Crisis, Barry Williams
Barry Williams
This paper considers the factors that determine Indonesian bank risk both before and after the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC). In the pre-AFC period, bank capital holdings are positively associated with bank revenue risk, which is attributed to a combination of regulatory laxity as well as laxity of enforcement. In the post-AFC period, capital is found to reduce bank risk in a non-linear manner. Franchise value is associated with lower bank risk, but in a non-linear manner; low levels of franchise value are associated with increased bank risk, while higher levels of franchise value result in lower bank risk. It is …
The Impact Of Corruption On Firm Tax Compliance In Transition Economies: Whom Do You Trust?, Anna Alon, Amy M. Hageman
The Impact Of Corruption On Firm Tax Compliance In Transition Economies: Whom Do You Trust?, Anna Alon, Amy M. Hageman
Faculty Publications
Tax compliance is an important issue for governments and the public alike. To meet public needs and fund public mandates, firms around the world are expected to comply with tax laws. Factors that are related to organizational (firm) tax compliance have not been sufficiently examined in the literature. Due to the increasing global influence of transition economies, factors associated with firm tax compliance in transition economies are particularly of interest. Based on a sample of over 5,000 firms from 22 former Soviet Bloc transition economies, we find that higher levels of corruption and higher levels of particularized trust (reliance on …
Be Careful About The Menace Of The Banks And Microfinance Companies, George E. Ekeha
Be Careful About The Menace Of The Banks And Microfinance Companies, George E. Ekeha

Currently, according to the Ghana Banking Survey 2010 by PriceWaterHouseCoopers, there are twenty six (26) registered banks with over 740 branches operating in the country offering several products designed to attract the average Ghanaian (with more in the pipeline because of the oil flow). Some years ago (may be 10 years or more), there were very few banks in the country with their products mostly designed towards the elite few. It was a common thing to see very long and winding queues extending several kilometres outside the banking halls of most of these banks. Especially the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), …
Let Us Spend Our Money On Income Generating Activities Rather Than Liabilities, George E. Ekeha
Let Us Spend Our Money On Income Generating Activities Rather Than Liabilities, George E. Ekeha

Many at times as I walk around town, in the cities and the country sides I try to observe how we live our lives in Ghana. In my previous article, I highlight some very important resources that we are endowed with in this country. We all know that those are just but few and we are proud that we have more resources than some of our neighbors in the Sub-Saharan African countries. One of these resources is the human capital. We can be proud of ourselves to have people who think about the necessity of peace in order to enhance …
Foreign Bank Efficiency In Australia: What Makes A Difference?, Jan-Egbert Sturm, Barry Williams
Foreign Bank Efficiency In Australia: What Makes A Difference?, Jan-Egbert Sturm, Barry Williams
Barry Williams
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors that affect differences in measured efficiency of foreign-owned banks operating in Australia. The relevance of both comparative advantage theory and new trade theory to multinational banking in Australia will be tested.
Design/methodology/approach – A three stage research method is employed. First, estimates of foreign bank efficiency are drawn from a larger sample of domestic and foreign banks in Australia. Efficiency is estimated using parametric distance functions, applying several different specifications of inputs and outputs. Second, factor analysis is used to estimate a series of common factors drawn from …

Nigerian Stock Market Reflection Of The Global Finance Crisis: An Evaluation, Sere- Ejembi A. A.
Nigerian Stock Market Reflection Of The Global Finance Crisis: An Evaluation, Sere- Ejembi A. A.
Bullion
With its roots in banking, the sub-prime mortgage crisis that commenced in the United States in 2007 soon resonated in other sectors of its financial system, and the economy, at large. It spread quickly to the developed economies in Europe, including the United Kingdom, and Asia. In the case of the Nigerian stock market, following initial relative insulation, the speed of contagion and response was comparatively slower. However, the effects began to manifest in the first quarter of 2008. The objective of this paper, therefore, is to review the global financial crisis, in the context of its recent effects on …

Banking On The Euro: Changes And Challenges, William K. Templeton, Charlotte A. Bond
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
Considers the likely effects of EMU and the introduction of the euro on the “fragmented” European banking industry. Recognizes that transition to the euro will be expensive in terms of equipment, training, customer care etc.; and that some new products and services will be demanded (e.g. cross-border cash management systems, euro-denominated bonds etc.) while others will decline (e.g. foreign exchange hedging, commercial loans etc.). Refers to US experience to identify growth opportunities and discusses the current and future impact of increased competition in the new market; and strategies for surviving it.
