A Measure Of International Managers' Mindset, Kamal Fatehi, Fariborz Ghadar Dec 2014

A Measure Of International Managers' Mindset, Kamal Fatehi, Fariborz Ghadar

Faculty and Research Publications

This paper aims to identifying managerial mindset by constructing a cognitive or integrative geocentrim index. Going international is either an extension of successful domestic business operations or a requirement for remaining competitive. It is imperative for firms to be a part of the international market. Therefore, firms should want to know how internationalized are their operations. To gain such knowledge requires measuring the degree of internationalization, which, in turn, is related to “managerial mindset”.

China-Based Industrial Espionage, Joel Savary

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

On Oct 8, 2014 China has surpassed the United States as the world’s largest economy in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)” (IMF). My paper explores one of the instances of unlawful business practices that have contributed to China’s new world position. China based espionage undercuts American businesses and U.S. foreign policy directly, causing catastrophic economic implications for America, its businesses, and its allies. The U.S. government is grappling with the means and methods China uses to disseminate information stolen from U.S. businesses to support China based industries. Due to the lack of transparency in China, it has been difficult …

Corporate Entrepreneurship, Customer-Oriented Selling, Absorptive Capacity, And International Sales Performance In The International B2b Setting: Conceptual Framework And Research Propositions, Rajshekhar G. Javalgi, Kenneth D. Hall, S. Tamer Cavusgil

Business Faculty Publications

In the international business-to-business (B2B) setting, a firm's salespeople often have more direct, prolonged, and intimate contact with the customer and market environments than any other employees of the firm. In fact, for customers in many B2B markets, the salesperson is the face of the firm. The sales function can be characterized as an inherently entrepreneurial activity. Entrepreneurship is founded on knowing or seeing something others do not see, and the sales force has long been recognized as an important source of knowledge about a firm's customers and environment. However, there has been relatively little work linking entrepreneurship to international …

"Trapped Cash" In The Technology Sector: Accounting Disclosures Of Permanently Reinvested Foreign Earnings & Foreign Cash Levels, Russell P. Engel, Bridget M. Lyons

WCBT Faculty Publications

Permanently reinvested earnings in foreign subsidiaries and cash balances held outside the United States have increased dramatically in the technology sector over the past five years. These values, as well as related unrecognized deferred tax liabilities, are significant to investors, regulators and others. We examine disclosures of the largest technology firms over the 2007 to 2013 period and find that, as a group, the firms have increased the information provided but by fiscal 2013 only four of the ten firms disclosed both foreign held cash and an estimate of the unrecognized deferred tax liability related to permanently reinvested earnings.

International Expansion Through Flexible Replication: Rethinking The Propositions, Emmanuel T. Kodzi Nov 2014

International Expansion Through Flexible Replication: Rethinking The Propositions, Emmanuel T. Kodzi

Faculty Publications

The international expansion of businesses today invites the analysis of organizational mechanisms that allow these businesses to thrive in spite of the known challenges of doing business in a foreign culture or market. Specifically, the extent to which firms replicate their existing business models relative to the perceived need for local adaptation is topical. This paper is a commentary on the brilliant work of Anna Jonsson and Nicolai Foss, who outline a model of flexible replication, drawing from a longitudinal study of IKEA, the famous Swedish home furnishing company. Their study concludes with four propositions for further investigation. For the …

California's Contributions To The U.S. Export Profile, Denise M. Lucy, Françoise Lepage, Jayati Ghosh

Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Small to medium sized enterprises (SME) are the engine of the United States economy. And the world’s emerging economies offer great opportunities to expand. However, only 1% of U.S. SMEs engage in the international marketplace. Efforts at the national level to expand all U.S. exports, and especially those of SMEs, depend upon each state in the union to participate in this venture. As a key contributor to the U.S. economy, California’s and its vast majority of SMEs, play a key role in U.S. export profile. This paper describes the export landscape of the top five U.S. states, focusing on California’s …

The hotel industry began in the Middle Ages and has given rise to massive multinational companies, many managing more than four thousand hotels. In stark contrast, the hostel industry began in 1909 and is mostly comprised of independently owned and operated guesthouses, with the largest global chain comprising of less than twenty properties. Why Can Weak Linkages Cause International Stock Market Synchronization? The Mode-Locking Effect, Larry Filer, David D. Selover May 2014

Why Can Weak Linkages Cause International Stock Market Synchronization? The Mode-Locking Effect, Larry Filer, David D. Selover

Economics Faculty Publications

This study investigates the synchronization between stock markets in different countries. International stock markets tend to synchronize with one another in what appears to be an international financial cycle, yet trade and capital flows between the stock markets do not appear to be strong enough for one stock market to “drive” fluctuations in another stock market. Why are these weakly linked financial markets synchronized? This study suggests that global stock market synchronization results from a “mode-locking” phenomenon, a nonlinear process in which even a weak coupling between oscillating systems like stock markets tends to synchronize the fluctuations between the systems. …

Keirestsu Centrality - Profits And Profit Stability: A Power Dependence Perspective, Lance Eilot Brouthers, Yan Gao, Stuart Napshin Apr 2014

Keirestsu Centrality - Profits And Profit Stability: A Power Dependence Perspective, Lance Eilot Brouthers, Yan Gao, Stuart Napshin

Faculty and Research Publications

Prior studies compare keiretsu member firm and independent firm performance. Here, we use historical and power dependence perspectives to theorize that the Japanese keiretsu system primarily benefits the most central firms. We test this by examining the performance of two types of keiretsu firms (central firms and other member firms) within two types of keiretsu (horizontal and vertical). We hypothesize and find that: (1) central vertical keiretsu firms are more profitable than central horizontal keiretsu firms; (2) central horizontal keiretsu firms have greater profit stability than central vertical keiretsu firms; (3) central vertical keiretsu firms are more profitable than non-central …

The Impact Of European Elections On Their Stock Markets, Andrew Lafortune

By analyzing market trends in eight different European countries—Belgium, Austria, France, Germany, Netherlands, Great Britain, Switzerland and Greece—since 1990, this paper attempts to identify any significant relationships between the results of an election and the performances of the major stock indices of these countries. By comparing country index returns starting one hundred days before and ending one hundred days after each election date to a global index, this paper explores the amount of risk in each …

Impacts Of China’S Foreign Direct Investment In Sub-Saharan Africa, Jian Zhang, Ilan Alon, Yanan Chen

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the impacts of foreign direct investment, as well as China’s FDI on GDP growth of Sub-Saharan African countries from a macroeconomic perspective. By using the data from 44 Sub-Saharan African countries from 2003-2010, our GMM results show that neither China’s FDI nor FDI net inflow in SSA has significant effect on economic growth of SSA countries. The possible explanations about the insignificant results include crowding out effect of China’s FDI on domestic investment, the declining in outward FDI in traditional sectors and rising in service sector which ignored in the current model, and the types of sectors …

Culture & Conflict: Intertwined With International Business, Chloe W. Friederichsen

Senior Honors Theses

International business has grown day by day as a powerful part of the world economy since the development of separate nations in ancient times. Today international transactions have become a very common entity in the business world. With this newfound trend comes the need to understand the complexities of culture and conflict management in order for an international business to succeed with a competitive edge. Both factors hold the potential to either mercilessly crumble an unprepared organization or richly reward a company for prodigious forethought and management skills. As a result, the link between the fragility of culture adaptation and …
