During the summer months of 1994 through 2000, the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies at the University of Central Florida has conducted a survey of Central Florida hospitality industry properties regarding wage rates and employee benefits. This ongoing project has been sponsored by the Hotel Human Resource Association of Central Florida and has been supported by the Central Florida Hotel Motel Association. This comprehensive study solicits and reports data on wages and benefits from 353 hospitality organization covering 120 occupational/hourly job titles and 46 management/supervisory position. The Impact Of Hospital Quality-Related Practices On Health Outcomes, Deborah A. Freund, Frank R. Lichtenberg

In this paper we analyze the cross-sectional relationship between hospital quality scores calculated by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and risk-adjusted indicators of outcomes and quality--mortality, rates of surgical/medical misadventures, adverse drug reactions, and length of stay--calculated from Nationwide Inpatient Sample discharge records. The results suggest that greater adherence to JCAHO accreditation standards is not associated with reduced mortality or lower probability of avoidable hospital or physician-caused adverse outcomes. Other hospital characteristics, such as teaching/non-teaching and urban/rural status, also exhibit little or no correlation with risk-adjusted survival and adverse-event probabilities.

Potential hotel guests who are not participants in a convention are many times able to negotiate their rates whereas convention participants pay higher fixed rates. Convention participants may begin representing themselves as nonconvention participants to obtain these lower rates. This will reduce the number of rooms that can be counted toward a convention-room block and may reduce the hotel's average daily rate or occupancy percentage. It is in the best interest of convention organizers and hotel executives if rate integrity exists among hotels in convention cities. Since before the end of the Cold War, terrorism acts have had major effects on tourism destinations. As a result, the 'shadowy, mobile, and unpredictable' forces of terrorism are becoming an unfortunate part of the travel and tourism landscape. Few can forget the explosion that killed three in Paris in 1986, the home-made pipe bomb in Tel Aviv in 1990, the November 1997 massacre of 58 tourists at Luxor's Temple of Hatshepsut in Egypt, and the Kenyan and Tanzanian US Embassy truck bombings killing 263 in August 1998.
