Defining The 'Social' In 'Social Entrepreneurship': Altruism And Entrepreneurship, Wee Liang Tan, John N. Williams, Teck Meng Tan

John N. WILLIAMS

What is social entrepreneurship? In, particular, what’s so social about it? Understanding what social entrepreneurship is enables researchers to study the phenomenon and policy-makers to design measures to encourage it. However, such an understanding is lacking partly because there is no universally accepted definition of entrepreneurship as yet. In this paper, we suggest a definition of social entrepreneurship that intuitively accords with what is generally accepted as entrepreneurship and that captures the way in which entrepreneurship may be altruistic. Based on this we provide a taxonomy of social entrepreneurship and identify a number of real cases from Asia illustrating the …

First Annual Invention2venture (I2v) Apprentice Challenge Workshop (2010) Nov 2010

First Annual Invention2venture (I2v) Apprentice Challenge Workshop (2010)

Paul Swamidass

In a nutshell, a number of AU student teams, after an introduction from experts on starting and running a business, were challenged along the lines of Mr. Trump’s TV show, “The Apprentice,” to start a business and produce income in 72 hours with $100 seed investment given to each team. The teams delivered, and in the process gained hands-on experience in entrepreneurship; the teams returned the seed investment and kept the profits. Two teams were rewarded.

Graphene Research Profile: Uk And Us Publications, 2000-2010, Philip Shapira, Jan Youtie, Stephen Carley

Philip Shapira

In this document we provide an overview of graphene research that appears in the Web of Science (WOS) during the timeframe 2000 to 2010, inclusive. WOS databases that contain graphene research articles include SCI-EXPANDED, SSCI and A&HCI. The search strategy used in this profile was a simple one: all WOS articles from 2000 to 2010 whose title contained the keyword ‘graphene’ were downloaded and analyzed using VantagePoint textmining software. The search strategy used resulted in a total of 4,706 publications spanning 11 years, 313 journals, 78 countries, 1,433 institutional affiliations and 7,617 authors. After a brief presentation of global results, …

Internationalization Of Chinese Firms In Europe: The Role Of Cultural Differences, Selena Aureli, Paola Demartini Oct 2010

Internationalization Of Chinese Firms In Europe: The Role Of Cultural Differences, Selena Aureli, Paola Demartini

selena aureli

During the last decade China has become an important international investor and its firms have also begun to invest in Europe targeting strategically important and high-tech industries. However, there are many Chinese firms that have learned some hard lessons from European acquisitions. Among the various factors that can hinder or facilitate the success of Chinese investments, we devote special attention to the role of cultural differences. Drawing from international literature on cross-border acquisitions and cross-cultural management, we assume that national culture influences corporate strategies and structures as well as managers’ behaviour. To understand fully differences and modes of interactions among …

The Role Of Chinese Smes In Italian Industrial Districts, Selena Aureli, Eduardo Barberis Oct 2010

The Role Of Chinese Smes In Italian Industrial Districts, Selena Aureli, Eduardo Barberis

selena aureli

Drawing from literature on immigrant entrepreneurship, local production systems and the concept of embeddedness, this paper aims to explore the role of small and medium sized firms established by Chinese immigrants in some Italian industrial districts. In particular, it highlights how this ethnic group is strictly involved and active in current changes into the district supply chain of the garment sector, notwithstanding the classical culturalist interpretation of immigrant’s firms which depicts Chinese businesses as self-referential and endogenous ethnic economies. Results indicate that Chinese firms do both create independent ethnic supply chains and collaborate with local firms, helping them to face …

The Importance Of Financial Market Development On The Relationship Between Loan Guarantees For Smes And Local Market Employment Rates, Ben Criag, William Jackson, James Thomson, Craig Armstrong Aug 2010

The Importance Of Financial Market Development On The Relationship Between Loan Guarantees For Smes And Local Market Employment Rates, Ben Criag, William Jackson, James Thomson, Craig Armstrong

James B Thomson

We empirically examine whether a major government intervention in the small firm credit market yields significantly better results in markets that are less financially developed. The government intervention that we investigate is SBA guaranteed lending. The literature on financing small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) suggests that small firms may be exposed to a particular type of market failure associated with credit rationing. And, SMEs in markets that are less financially developed will likely face a greater degree of this market failure. To test our hypothesis we use the level of bank deposits per capita as our relative measure of …

Founding Family Leadership And Industry Profitability, Trond Randoy, Clay Dibrell, Justin Craig Jul 2010

Founding Family Leadership And Industry Profitability, Trond Randoy, Clay Dibrell, Justin Craig

Justin B. Craig

In this article, we argue that firms in high-margin industries can benefit from founding family influence. Specifically, in more profitable markets, the influence of the founding family provides an additional corporate governance-monitoring function. The sample consists of 294 firm-year observations from 98 publicly traded companies headquartered in Sweden, representing approximately half of all nonfinancial traded firms. Our support that the effect of family leadership in publicly held firms should be assessed in relation to the intensity of industry competition.

Factors Critical In Overcoming The Liability Of Newness: Highlighting The Role Of Family, Clay Dibrell, Justin Craig, Ken Moores, Aaron Johnson, Peter David

Justin B. Craig

With a focus on the role of family, we explore factors critical in enabling start-up ventures to attain legitimacy and overcome the liability of newness. Drawing from multiple interviews with leaders of seven start-up ventures, we investigate the function of a variety of factors [e.g., family, distributors, financial supporters, etc.] deemed critical in attaining venture legitimacy. To validate our findings, we conducted additional interviews with three established family ventures. Our discussion highlights the role of family as a legitimizing strategy and provides an increased awareness of how internal and external resources are leveraged by the start-up to gain legitimacy.

Integrating "Employability" Into The He Curriculum: Case Studies Of Online Portfolio Implementation In The Uk, Lisa Harris, Paul Harrigan, Annette Naudin

Dr. Paul Harrigan

In today’s global market place employers are seeking high level skills of communication, networking and entrepreneurship in their potential employees. Increasingly, these skills extend to online methods of engagement through social media. The idea of the ‘digital native’ suggests that students are able to use such tools effectively, having grown up with these technologies, but more recent research suggests otherwise.

We argue that a traditional university education does not in itself equip students for the modern workplace, and that effective integration of digital research, communication and creative skills into the curriculum is required. The implementation of what we have labelled …

Athletic Voices And Academic Victories: African American Male Student-Athlete Experiences In The Pac-Ten, Keith Harrison May 2010

Athletic Voices And Academic Victories: African American Male Student-Athlete Experiences In The Pac-Ten, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

The purpose of this study was to explore participants’ academic experiences and confidence about their academic achievement. Participants (N = 27) consisted of high-achieving African American male student—athletes from four academically rigorous American universities in the Pac-Ten conference. Most of the participants competed in revenue-generating sports and were interviewed to obtain a deeper understanding of their successful academic experiences. Utilizing a phenomenological approach four major themes emerged: “I Had to Prove I’m Worthy,” “I’m a Perceived Threat to Society,” “It’s About Time Management,” and “It’s About Pride and Hard Work.” Stereotype threat and stereotype reactance are investigated in relation to …

Participatory Rural Appraisal, Ganesh Chandra Apr 2010

Participatory Rural Appraisal, Ganesh Chandra

Ganesh Chandra

Participation, empowerment and inclusion have become the new development buzzword. There has been a range of interpretations of the meaning of participation in development. Participatory development starts from the premise that it is important to identify and build upon strengths already present in communities. Perhaps the most widespread appearance of participation in mainstream development has been seen in the form of participatory methodologies of research, intended to gather a wide range of information from local people at their livelihoods, needs, and strengths, at the same time as 'empowering' them through a process of collaborative analysis and learning. PRA is a …

Dissemination Of Communication And Information In Inland Fisheries, Ganesh Chandra Apr 2010

Dissemination Of Communication And Information In Inland Fisheries, Ganesh Chandra

Ganesh Chandra

Flow of communication and information from the research station to the end user is sine qua non for the sustainable production as well as productivity enhancement in inland fisheries and the development of fishers as a whole. The resource poor who are often more in need than others of information on sustainable and low external input technologies is least likely to gain access to the information required. This has been seen particularly in the fisheries sector where the channels of information accessible to the resource poor delivered information on new practices and recommendations as well as the new culture technologies, …

Knowledge, Capabilities And Manufacturing Innovation: A Us-Europe Comparison, Stephen Roper, Jan Youtie, Philip Shapira, Andrea Fernandez-Ribas Mar 2010

Knowledge, Capabilities And Manufacturing Innovation: A Us-Europe Comparison, Stephen Roper, Jan Youtie, Philip Shapira, Andrea Fernandez-Ribas

Andrea Fernandez-Ribas

This paper presents a comparative analysis of factors contributing to the innovation performance of manufacturing firms in Georgia (USA), Wales (UK), the West Midlands (UK), and Catalonia (Spain). Enabled by comparable survey data, multivariate probit models are developed to estimate how various types of firms’ innovative activities are influenced by links to external knowledge sources, internal resources, absorptive capacity, and public innovation support. The results suggest the potential for mutual learning. For the European study regions there are insights about how universities in Georgia support innovation. For Georgia and Catalonia there are lessons from UK firms about better capturing potential …

Globalization And Management, Mike Lewis Mar 2010

Globalization And Management, Mike Lewis

Mike Lewis D.Mgt.

The reach of markets and business expanded across the globe more than half a millennium ago when Europeans conquered the seas. Since that time, communication and information technologies have reduced to span of the globe to the speed of electrons so that buyers and sellers can exchange in one second or less. Technology combined with favorable politics and exploding world populations ushered in the era of globalization. With production and commodity drivers, the globe transformed into a shopping cart for profits, power, and people (resources). Uncontrolled and unbalanced outcomes benefited some while harming others, leading to eventual backlashes and failed …

Export Incentives And International Entrepreneurship In Malaysian Firms, Zafar U. Ahmed, Craig C. Julian, Abdul J. Mahajar Mar 2010

Export Incentives And International Entrepreneurship In Malaysian Firms, Zafar U. Ahmed, Craig C. Julian, Abdul J. Mahajar

Dr Craig C Julian

This study explores Malaysian entrepreneurs' incentives to export when engaging in international business. The data gathered were based on a survey of 214 Malaysian manufacturing firms. Statistical analysis was carried out using one-way analysis of variance. With the exception of a 'decline in the value of currency relative to foreign markets', the results indicate no significant differences in the perceptions of exporters and non-exporters towards the various incentives to export. Thirteen of the export incentives tested in this study were deemed to be significant to Malaysian entrepreneurs. These were: reduction of tariffs in target countries; attractive export incentives provided by …

Marketing To Entrepreneurs, Site Selectors And Relocation Professionals: An Action Plan For Community Economic Development, Oscar T. Mcknight, Ronald Paugh, Aaron Mcknight, Megan Polak

Oscar T McKnight Ph.D.

Community officials offer an array of incentives to stimulate local business growth, unaware of the salient criteria that determine location decisions. An analysis of proprietary research reports and site selector feasibility studies indicates specific criteria that are universally evaluated, nine of which undermine economic development initiatives. An ‘ACTION’ plan is provided to assist city planners’ efforts in appealing to site selection professionals.

The Emergence Of Social Science Research In Nanotechnology, Philip Shapira, Jan Youtie, Alan L. Porter Feb 2010

The Emergence Of Social Science Research In Nanotechnology, Philip Shapira, Jan Youtie, Alan L. Porter

Philip Shapira

This article examines the development of social science literature focused on the emerging area of nanotechnology. It is guided by the exploratory proposition that early social science work on emerging technologies will draw on science and engineering literature on the technology in question to frame its investigative activities, but as the technologies and societal investments in them progress, social scientists will increasingly develop and draw on their own body of literature. To address this proposition the authors create a database of nanotechnology-social science literature by merging articles from the Web of Science’s Social Science Citation Index and Arts and Humanities …

Responding To Stakeholders’ Critical Needs- The Integrative Model Of Stakeholders’ Management (Imsm), Grace S. Thomson Jan 2010

Responding To Stakeholders’ Critical Needs- The Integrative Model Of Stakeholders’ Management (Imsm), Grace S. Thomson

Dr. Grace S. Thomson

Organizations are increasingly required to enhance their accountability to diverse internal and external stakeholders (Burrows, 1999). Knowing and understanding stakeholders’ expectations increases the ability of an organization to effectively respond to those expectations. Stakeholder relationship management is critical for corporate sustainability (Perrini & Tencati, 2006) or “capacity of a firm to continue operating over a long period of time” (p. 296). Organizations may benefit from developing collaborative interactions with their stakeholders, integrating their values and views into the formulation and implementation of organizational goals and objectives (Merrick, Parnell, Barnett & Garcia, 2005; Susniene & Vanagas, 2006).
