Clusters And Strategy In Regional Economic Development, Edward Feser Dec 2009

Clusters And Strategy In Regional Economic Development, Edward Feser

Edward J Feser

Many economic development practitioners view cluster theory and analysis as constituting a general approach to strategy making in economic development, which may lead them to prioritize policy and planning interventions that cannot address the actual development challenges in their cities and regions. This paper discusses the distinction between strategy formation and strategic planning, where the latter is the programming of development strategies that are identified through a blend of experience, intuition, and analysis. Cluster theories and analytical tools can provide useful informational inputs into a strategy making effort and they can also be helpful for programming specific interventions (i.e., strategic …

Determinants Of Foreign Direct Investment In Iran: An Empirical Study Using Structural Equation Modeling, Ahmad Jafarnejad, Arash Golnam, Nader Ale Ebrahim Nov 2009

Determinants Of Foreign Direct Investment In Iran: An Empirical Study Using Structural Equation Modeling, Ahmad Jafarnejad, Arash Golnam, Nader Ale Ebrahim

Nader Ale Ebrahim

This paper examines the determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Iran by applying the structural equation modelling (SEM). Using the annual time series data for the 1991-2006 period, two models were developed. In the first model the correlation between 12 determining factors and FDI in Iran were analyzed and in the second model the 12 factors were fit into five categories of determinants namely: Business, Economic, Infrastructural, Oil and Science and Technology and the impact of each of the mentioned groups of factors was investigated. The results derived through the first model indicated that openness of trade and Gross …

The Case For Actively Seeking Startup Companies For “Technology-Push” Inventions From Universities: A Research Agenda, Paul Swamidass Sep 2009

The Case For Actively Seeking Startup Companies For “Technology-Push” Inventions From Universities: A Research Agenda, Paul Swamidass

Paul Swamidass

Google Inc. began as a startup when all the large players in the industry turned down the opportunity to license the technology from Stanford University; Google has since become the leader in the industry with nearly 20,000 employees and a market value of about $150 Billion as of August 2009. Startup companies, using university technologies, have the potential to become a major economic force in the economy. But, it takes additional skills and effort on the part of University Offices of Technology Transfer (UOTT) to license an invention to a startup company compared to the effort needed to license to …

Australia’S Dennis Family Corporation, Justin Craig, Ken Moores Sep 2009

Australia’S Dennis Family Corporation, Justin Craig, Ken Moores

Justin B. Craig

This paper details how the Australia Dennis family has been able to professionalize their family business while still retaining their family values and realizing the founders’ vision. We detail how Bert and Dawn Dennis and their four adult offspring decided to amalgamate their associated businesses with the parent company and take on the challenge of professionalizing this new entity. We highlight that, although the four siblings had learnt business, they had to now learn their family business. In addition, the CEO, Grant Dennis, had to learn to lead the business. As well, the Dennis family had to learn to give …

Epilogue - Family Business: A Rich Research Repository, Justin Craig, Ken Moores, Carole Howorth, Panikkos Poutziouris

Justin B. Craig

Extract:

As evidenced in our opening paper Family Business Research at a Tipping Point Threshold (Craig, Moores, Horworth & Poutzouris 2009), family business as a research pursuit has undergone significant growth during the last decade (Heck, Hoy, Poutziouris & Steier 2008; Sharma, Hoy, Astrachan & Koiranen 2007). The issues that have faced family business as a research destination are common among all emerging fields (Moores 2009b). Diverse methods are appropriate when the questions being asked are more common than the answers being provided. Therefore, a range of qualitative and quantitative methods are involved according to the nature of questions. Although …

Agency Differences In Professional Family Businesses: The Known And The Unknown, Ken Moores, Justin Craig Sep 2009

Agency Differences In Professional Family Businesses: The Known And The Unknown, Ken Moores, Justin Craig

Justin B. Craig

We suggest in this paper one of the reasons that researchers concur agency costs in family firms are more complex than originally thought maybe related to the lack of conceptual clarity. This, we propose, is because when frameworks and theories are borrowed and enthusiastically embraced without attention to clearly defining concepts from original sources, conceptual clarity is clouded. Clarity is achieved by specifying the conditions necessary for these concepts to be applicable in generating originally envisaged consequences. We present the conditions necessary for the optimum applicability of original agency theoretical concepts in family firms and tentatively distinguish between what is …

Does Small Store Location Matter? A Test Of Three Classic Theories Of Retail Location, Reginald Litz, Gulasekaran Rajaguru Aug 2009

Does Small Store Location Matter? A Test Of Three Classic Theories Of Retail Location, Reginald Litz, Gulasekaran Rajaguru

Gulasekaran Rajaguru

Just how important is physical location as a source of small-firm advantage? In this paper we consider this question by testing the predictive validity of three classic perspectives: central-place theory, spatial interaction theory and the principle of minimum differentiation. In addition, we identify and test two manager-grounded hypotheses focusing on locational continuity and transactional convenience. We test these hypotheses on a sample of small U.S. retail hardware stores and find significant support for central-place theory and both manager-grounded hypotheses.

The Road To Legitimacy: A Study Of Startups And Their Established Competitors In The Australian Wine Industry (Summary), Clay Dibrell, Aaron Johnson, Peter Davis, Ken Moores, Justin Craig Aug 2009

The Road To Legitimacy: A Study Of Startups And Their Established Competitors In The Australian Wine Industry (Summary), Clay Dibrell, Aaron Johnson, Peter Davis, Ken Moores, Justin Craig

Justin B. Craig

A barrier to startup success is the liability of newness. One strategy to overcome this obstacle is through gaining venture legitimacy. Legitimacy is defined as acceptance, suitability, and appeal of the startup as judged by external and internal stakeholders such as the marketplace, industry competitors, and employees. Through attainment of legitimacy, a startup now has increased opportunities to access resources required for survival and growth. Drawing from institutional theory, a startup should heed external institutional forces and adapt to isomorphic pressures to gain legitimacy in an industry. Alternatively, a resource-based view perspective suggests that internal coordination and marshaling of resources …

There Should Be Little Or No Liquidity Discounts For Controlling Interests In Closely Held Businesses, Michael Sack Elmaleh Jul 2009

There Should Be Little Or No Liquidity Discounts For Controlling Interests In Closely Held Businesses, Michael Sack Elmaleh

Michael Sack Elmaleh

The application of liquidity discounts to the appraised values of controlling interests in closely held businesses reflects a failure of the valuation community to fully appreciate the fact that these equity interests belong to a fundamentally different investment class than publicly traded securities. Investors in publicly traded securities have dramatically different expectations about the benefits and sacrifices of such investments, compared to the expectations of benefits and sacrifices of investors in closely held companies. Investors in publicly traded securities expect their minority interest investments to be highly liquid, yield free cash flow, and require no participation in the management of …

Understanding The New Marketing Dna: Bringing Marketing Education Up To Speed With Marketing Practice, Paul Harrigan, James Seligman Jul 2009

Understanding The New Marketing Dna: Bringing Marketing Education Up To Speed With Marketing Practice, Paul Harrigan, James Seligman

Dr. Paul Harrigan

This research is concerned with the overarching impact of technology on marketing, and the need to review higher education marketing curriculum to reflect this impact. The research objectives are twofold: the identification of changes in marketing practice; and how these changes should be reflected in marketing degree programme structure. The ongoing research project involves a mixed methods approach. The qualitative phase comprised in-depth interviews and focus groups with a range of marketing managers in UK organisations. This comprehensive two-year phase was completed in 2008, laying foundations for further quantitative empirical investigation, due to be completed in 2010. The current paper …

Using E-Crm To Create Customer Insight In Smes, Paul Harrigan, Elaine Ramsey, Patrick Ibbotson Jul 2009

Using E-Crm To Create Customer Insight In Smes, Paul Harrigan, Elaine Ramsey, Patrick Ibbotson

Dr. Paul Harrigan

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are vital components of our economies, and their marketing exhibits striking resemblances to customer relationship management (CRM) theory. However, SMEs’ marketing strategies tend to suffer from the effects of limited resources, limited expertise and a limited impact on their external environment. Through the use of Internet-based technologies (IBTs) SMEs may be able to enhance marketing performance and competitiveness, particularly by facilitating the development of customer insight through improved technology-enabled customer information management processes. In this regard, this paper will present research evidence to help us understand the impact of IBTs on the CRM activities (i.e. …

Driving Nigerian Smes Venture Capital Transformational Financing Super-Highway: Focus On The Nigerian Economy, Daibi W. Dagogo Jul 2009

Driving Nigerian Smes Venture Capital Transformational Financing Super-Highway: Focus On The Nigerian Economy, Daibi W. Dagogo

Daibi W Dagogo

The fact that a business started small is not an absolute transcendental sentence to perpetual littleness & ordinariness. This conviction set the stage for the conduct of this study. The prime task was to examine the transformational financing window of venture capital (VC) and its instrumentality in driving small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to the higher heights of greatness and largeness. The key perspectives of VC examined were equity finance, management support, and technical support. A total of 120 copies of questionnaire were administered on SME focal officials (60 each for VC-backed and non-VC-backed) in various parts of Nigeria. The …

Fueling Innovation Through Information Technology In Smes, Clay Dibrell, Peter S. Davis, Justin B. Craig May 2009

Fueling Innovation Through Information Technology In Smes, Clay Dibrell, Peter S. Davis, Justin B. Craig

Justin B. Craig

This paper describes a study that investigates the mediating effects of information technology (IT) on the relationships among product and process innovations and firm performance (measured in multiple profitability and growth rate metrics). Using structural equation modeling on a sample of 397 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), we find evidence that (1) increases on the strategic emphasis placed on innovation, both product and process, positively impact the prominence managers place on IT; (2) the impact of innovation (both product and process) on performance (both profitability and growth) is primarily indirect, felt via the mechanism of the importance managers place on …

Innovation For The Manchester City Region: A Discussion Paper, Philip Shapira, Michael Luger, Elvira Uyarra, Chiara Marzocchi May 2009

Innovation For The Manchester City Region: A Discussion Paper, Philip Shapira, Michael Luger, Elvira Uyarra, Chiara Marzocchi

Philip Shapira

After considering what is meant by innovation, we conceptualize the uses and sources of innovation at the level of a city-region. We suggest that this conceptualization, drawing on frameworks available in the literature, can provide a useful basis both for interpretation and policy operationalization. We then consider examples from practice, drawing on mini-case studies of innovation strategies in selected multi-area metropolitan agglomerations in other countries. This leads to a discussion of grand challenges and implementation problems of innovation facing the Manchester city-region. Finally, we consider implications strategy development and for the Manchester city-region innovation prospectus itself.

Critical Factors Underpinning The E-Crm Activities Of Smes, Paul Harrigan, Elaine Ramsey, Patrick Ibbotson Apr 2009

Critical Factors Underpinning The E-Crm Activities Of Smes, Paul Harrigan, Elaine Ramsey, Patrick Ibbotson

Dr. Paul Harrigan

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are vital components of our economies, but many struggle to perform the marketing prescribed theoretically for large organisations. In practice, marketing is performed in SMEs through an intrinsic customer orientation, which exhibits striking resemblances to customer relationship management (CRM) theory. A quantitative approach was adopted to provide broad understanding and classification to the under-researched area of e-CRM in SMEs. Exploratory factor analysis uncovered eight distinct yet inter-related factors underpinning the practices and processes of e-CRM in SMEs. Findings show that SMEs are performing e-CRM to varying extents, reaping a range of performance benefits and facing …

An Investigation Of Hindsight Bias In Nascent Venture Activity, Gavin Cassar, Justin Craig Feb 2009

An Investigation Of Hindsight Bias In Nascent Venture Activity, Gavin Cassar, Justin Craig

Justin B. Craig

We posit that individuals who are actively engaged in activities to develop their own venture will exhibit hindsight bias when recalling their startup experiences. We observe that those who fail to develop their startup activity into an operating business demonstrate substantial hindsight bias concerning the probability of venture formation. In particular, the recalled probability of success, reported after their decision to quit, is lower than the probability of success solicited during the nascent process. We argue that the systematic distortion of the past has important implications for individuals involved in the venturing process. Specifically, we suggest that these individuals are …
