Dispatches From Donut Land

DePaul Magazine

Beavers Coffee & Donuts isn’t the only mobile donut shop in Chicago, but it was the first, and it’s still the only one making its tasty treats fresh to order. Co-owner and co-founder, Gabriel Wiesen's (BUS '08) little donut shop on wheels paved the way for a whole range of related endeavors: catering private events, franchise opportunities and Midwest Food Trucks, another of Wiesen’s ventures, which manufactures nearly half of the licensed food trucks in Chicago. He also launched the Illinois Food Truck Owners Association as a vehicle to amplify owners’ voices and advocate for their rights.

From Shannon To Dallas: The Final Twenty-One Weeks Of Jfk’S Presidency : Narrative And Reflection, Brian Murphy

Level 3

This article traces the final weeks and days of John F. Kennedy’s presidency from his departure from Shannon Airport on 29 June 1963 to his assassination in Dallas, Texas on 22 November. It argues that this period was among the most action-packed and significant of Kennedy’s presidency as he doggedly pursued a peace strategy. Kennedy had entered office as a convinced Cold Warrior, but the Cuban Missile Crisis had altered his views and persuaded him of the need for peaceful co-existence with the Communist world. In this short twenty-one week period, Kennedy concluded a significant nuclear test ban treaty and …

Turkish Smes’ Use Of Financial Statements For Decision Making, Howard E. Vanauken, Semra Ascigil, Shawn Carraher

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

With a sample of 91 small Turkish firms, this study examines the factors that affect the use of financial statements, and the important information they contain, to make decisions. A principal components analysis identifies three key variables that determine the use of financial statements: experience, confidence, and knowledge. Logit analysis reveals that these three variables are significantly associated with whether Turkish business owners use financial statements to make decisions. These results can help business owners and service providers for these businesses understand what affects their use of financial statements and the process by which financial statements get incorporated into decisions.

On The Behavior Of Entrepreneurial Factor Supply To The Firm, Nicos Zafiris May 2016

On The Behavior Of Entrepreneurial Factor Supply To The Firm, Nicos Zafiris

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This paper draws on an existing, but little used, approach to the choices governing the supply of ‘entrepreneurial’, in the sense of ‘residually remunerated’, resources to an enterprise, especially post start up. It focuses in particular on the hybrid ‘own factor demand/supply curve’ to the firm of Bronfenbrenner (1960), but attempts to treat such supply in conjunction with ‘contractual’ employment of resources, thus making use of gearing and portfolio concepts. To achieve this, it is found necessary for the hybrid schedule to be reinterpreted and recast as the locus of the relevant utility maximising choices. A model is presented which …

Commercial Bank Small Business Lending Pre And Post Crisis, Kevin T. Jacques, Richard Moylan, Peter J. Nigro Mar 2016

Commercial Bank Small Business Lending Pre And Post Crisis, Kevin T. Jacques, Richard Moylan, Peter J. Nigro

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

We analyze small business lending at U.S. commercial banks, how it has changed over time and how it differs by bank size. Specifically, we examine the impact of government policy intervention on small business lending in the aftermath of the financial crisis. We find several important results. First, we find that the Troubled-Asset Relief Program’s (TARP) $200 billion Capital Purchase Program (CPP) had little impact on the banks that received capital injections’ small business lending. Second, the Small Business Loan Fund (SBLF) lending program appears to have been a success as banks participating in the loan fund increased their lending …

The Maturing Of Entrepreneurial Firms: Entrepreneurial Orientation, Firm Performance, And Administrative Heritage, Birton Cowden, Jintong Tang, Josh Bendickson Jan 2016

The Maturing Of Entrepreneurial Firms: Entrepreneurial Orientation, Firm Performance, And Administrative Heritage, Birton Cowden, Jintong Tang, Josh Bendickson

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

A large body of research has exhibited the positive effect of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on firm performance. However, research that attempts to explore what happens to high EO firms when they mature is sorely needed. Every firm establishes a heritage over time that impacts future capabilities. In the current research, we build on the international business literature to examine how a firm’s administrative heritage moderates the long-term effects of the EO-performance relationship, examined through the firm’s asset specificity, founder tenure, and home culture embeddedness. From this, implications are derived for EO retention and the firm’s awareness of administrative heritage and …

Risk Management In The Venture Capital Industry: Managing Risk In Portfolio Companies, Dorian Proksch, Wiebke Stranz, Andreas Pinkwart, Michael Schefczyk

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Managing risk is one of the main activities of venture capital companies. Despite the fact that this topic is of high practical relevance, only little research was published on risk management performed by venture capital companies in their ventures. Hence, we conducted a structured literature review which was the basis for developing five hypotheses concerning measures to decrease failure risk in venture capital-backed ventures. We tested these hypotheses with an empirical data set of 93 venture capital-backed ventures in Germany using original deal data from nine different venture capital funds using a structural equation model. We showed that the experience …

Food Policy: Urban Farming As A Supplemental Food Source, Bessie Didomenica, Mark Gordon Jan 2016

Food Policy: Urban Farming As A Supplemental Food Source, Bessie Didomenica, Mark Gordon

Journal of Sustainable Social Change

Food policy has a unique role for public, nonprofit, private, and academic stakeholders. Growing food in the city is a challenge worldwide. Food systems can be destroyed by external (weather extremes) and internal (zoning regulations) forces. This study explores urban farms as a secondary food source and their common themes across four sectors. A Northeastern U.S. city was the case study to examine how it implemented its formal urban agriculture program. The positive social change implications of urban farms include greater food visibility and food access in low-income areas and more consumer awareness about growing fresh food. This study contributes …

Inquiring Into Entrepreneurial Orientation: Making Progress, One Step At A Time, Vishal K. Gupta, Dev K. Dutta Jan 2016

Inquiring Into Entrepreneurial Orientation: Making Progress, One Step At A Time, Vishal K. Gupta, Dev K. Dutta

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

As we think through the four papers that comprise this special issue, we cannot help but be elated at the progress made by "entrepreneurial orientation" (EO) scholarship over the past few decades. Indeed, it seems safe to contend that EO defies the description of entrepreneurship research as a “hodgepodge” (Shane & Venkataraman, 2000), and instead serves as a good example of how a cumulative body of knowledge should develop in organizational science.
