Investing In A Better Job, Michael Sack Elmaleh Nov 2008

Investing In A Better Job, Michael Sack Elmaleh

Michael Sack Elmaleh

Investing time and money to attain "something" that allows a person to earn more in future wages is economically rational, if the present value of the additional future wages exceeds the present value of the investment cost in time and money to attain that "something". In our market economy, these attained "somethings" include college degrees, vocational and professional certifications, and equity ownership in small closely held businesses. Most small closely held businesses require the full time active management of the owner. Little or no free cash flow would be available to the investor if they chose to hire a non …

A Mapping Of Ethnic Entrepreneurship In Ireland, Thomas Cooney, Anthony Flynn

Reports

The research findings presented in this report represent the first major attempt to map in a systematic fashion ethnic entrepreneurial activity in Ireland. The rapid transformation of the demographic profile of Ireland in this decade through unprecedented levels of immigration has stimulated debate on the economic and social policy implications of the new multi-racial Ireland. One facet to this policy debate is the potential for non-Irish nationals to bolster indigenous business activity. It was the aim of this research to capture the essential nature of ethnic entrepreneurship in Ireland in 2008 with a view to better informing policy formulation as …

Brain Drain In Nebraska: What Do The Data Show?, Steve Carlson, Hanna Hartman, Eric Thompson Nov 2008

Brain Drain In Nebraska: What Do The Data Show?, Steve Carlson, Hanna Hartman, Eric Thompson

Business in Nebraska

Brain Drain in Nebraska: What do the data show?

Introduction

Nebraska is a growing state, but it is a slowly growing state. Over the last decade, population growth in Nebraska, at 0.6% per year, has lagged the national average rate of 1.0%. This gap in growth rates is large in real terms. Given a current population of approximately 1.8 million persons, Nebraska would grow by approximately 18,000 persons per year if it grew at the national growth rate of 1.0% per year. Instead, the state only adds about 11,000 persons per year. A lower growth rate results in a loss …

Emergence Of Nanodistricts In The United States: Path Dependency Or New Opportunities?, Philip Shapira, Jan Youtie Aug 2008

Emergence Of Nanodistricts In The United States: Path Dependency Or New Opportunities?, Philip Shapira, Jan Youtie

Philip Shapira

Multiple economic development theories suggest that research and innovation in emerging technologies will cluster in certain locations rather then distributing equally among all regions. If this is the case, this distributional pattern has implications for where future economic opportunities as well as future risks will be concentrated. In this paper, we probe nanotechnology (hereafter nano) research and commercialization at a regional level. The study examines the top 30 US “nanodistricts” or metropolitan areas which lead in nanotechnology research activity over the 1990-2006 timeframe. We explore the factors underlying the emergence of these 30 metropolitan areas through exploratory cluster analysis. We …

The Implementation Of Trademark Law In Small And Medium Size Enterprises (Sme) Business Activities In Indonesia, Alexander Y Agung Nugroh, Sih Yuliana Wahyuningtyas

Business Review

In the aftermath of SME and the bigger enterprises in Indonesia, there emerges a suspicion that due to the lack of financial and technical capacity in competing with the bigger enterprises, SME conducts various violation of trademark law. Now, the essence of trademark protection is at stake, along with the struggle for SME’s life. The challenge for the future will be ensuring greater harmonization of the protection for SME and at the same time, also for trademark. This paper examines the prominent roles of trademark law in dealing business and its implementation by SME.

Information is gathered through in-depth interviews with owner-managers on their premises. Convenience sampling is used within the city of Karachi. Firms included relate to production, and services (including retail). It was found that most of the firms are not marketing oriented and they do not understand marketing. Thus they will benefit from some kind of marketing training conducted by the government or through their own resources.

Distinguishing Owner Compensation From Profit In Closely Held Companies: In Search Of A Responsibility Premium, Michael Sack Elmaleh Jun 2008

Distinguishing Owner Compensation From Profit In Closely Held Companies: In Search Of A Responsibility Premium, Michael Sack Elmaleh

Michael Sack Elmaleh

The application of the income method of valuation requires that owner compensation be distinguished from free cash flow. The “proper” parsing of compensation and free cash flow can be the largest point of contention in contested valuation disputes. The preferred method of parsing is the substitution method which says that the proper allocation should be based on the wage that would have to be paid to a non owner employee. In this article I argue that owner employees carry additional responsibilities that are not normally borne by non owner employees. These additional responsibilities require that a premium be paid the …
