Immersive simulations such as virtual reality is becoming more prevalent for use in training environments for many professions. United States Air Force firefighters may benefit from incorporating VR technology into their training program to increase organizational commitment, job satisfaction, self-efficacy, and job performance. A survey was distributed to 865 active duty Air Force Civil Engineer company grade officers (CGOs) assigned to locations throughout the world. The survey was designed to assess the CGOs' current job satisfaction and their intentions towards making a career out of the Air Force. Additionally, the survey measured the CGOs' perceptions of outsourcing, and how they feel that it will influence the Civil Engineer career field. Relationships were evaluated between the perceptions of outsourcing and job satisfaction, and between job satisfaction and turnover intentions. There are more than 4,000 Air Force (AF) sites requiring restoration due to hazardous waste contamination. The AF goal is to completely restore all sites by 2000. One method of achieving this ambitious goal is to use in-house capabilities. This study examined the potential use of RED HORSE capabilities and training activities to assist with cleanup of contaminated sites. RED HORSE capabilities and training requirements were compared to the primary cleanup needs of the AF.
