The Cherokee Nation is the second largest Indian tribe in the United States. It has the rights of a sovereign nation, though those rights are somewhat limited by Congress. Because Congress can take away a tribe’s sovereignty, it is important for tribes to maintain a strong public image among the dominant culture, because politicians do not attack popular entities. This paper proposes a long-term plan to keep Cherokee Nation in good favor with the general public, and more specifically the opinion leaders and elected officials who can impact the Nation’s future.
