A highly engaged workforce provides numerous organizational and individual benefits (Shuck et al., 2016), the culmination of which leads to a competitive advantage difficult to emulate (Burke et al., 2013). It remains challenging to understand how engagement develops, with little research available explaining the process (Shuck, 2020). High employee engagement levels provide a competitive advantage, but stagnant engagement levels remain a significant obstacle (Shuck, 2020).

This behavior includes a reluctance to take on extra tasks or provide input. Fostering appreciation, connection to the practice's goals, and open feedback can help re-engage employees. Measuring Transformational Leadership, Employee Engagement, And Employee Productivity: Retail Stores, Shamika Schumane Desilva

Retail stores are less profitable because of poor productivity from disengaged employees. Retail store leaders must prioritize employee productivity, as low productivity can negatively impact business performance with financial consequences. Grounded in transformational leadership theory and the theory of work engagement, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between transformational leadership, employee engagement, and employee productivity in retail stores. Survey responses were collected from 119 nonmanagerial employees in the retail sector in the eastern United States. The results of the multiple linear regression analysis indicated the model was statistically significant, F(7, 112) = 35.149, p < .01, R2 = .69. The only two significant individual predictors were individual consideration (t = 4.10, p < .01) and vigor (t = 5.36, p < .01). A key recommendation is for retail store leaders to enact strategies promoting vigor- employees who work with high energy and effort levels, and to employ a transformational leadership style, particularly showing employees individualized consideration. Creating such a positive working environment for employees will improve their productivity. Implications for positive social change include the potential for retail managers to increase competitiveness for retail stores. The success of retail businesses, driven by improved worker productivity, may ensure financial stability for workers, families, and communities.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop an additional perspective on when and why intrinsic motivation predicts employee engagement by presenting a contextual boundary of psychological detachment in relation to the relationship between intrinsic motivation, employee creativity and employee engagement of workers.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 288 full-time Japanese workers using an online survey. The study used a bootstrap method (Preacher and Hayes, 2008) to test mediation, and a Hayes method (2013) to test moderation and a first-stage moderated mediation model.

Design/methodology/approach - In total 181 participants completed the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) to measure work engagement including the dimensions of absorption, vigor and dedication as well as demographics. This study examines the long-standing debate among scholars and practitioners regarding the effectiveness of the performance appraisal (PA) process as a useful tool to manage individual and organizational performance (Glover, 1996; Gruman & Saks, 2011; Kondrasuk, 2012; Light, 2010; Pulakos & O’Leary, 2011; Thomas & Bretz, 1994). To further this discussion, the relationship between employees’ reactions to the PA process and perceptions of engagement in the workplace is examined.
