Interim Management Arrangements For The Commercial Mackerel Fishery. Ministers Responses To The Final Report Of The Mackerel Independent Advisory Panel. (Fisheries Management Paper 164), Kim Chance
Fisheries management papers
The Government recognises that the mackerel fishery is important to both the recreational and commercial fishing sectors. However, the purpose of these arrangements is not to allocate the mackerel resource between the sectors but within the commercial sector. Resources sharing issues are subject to investigation in the Integrated Fisheries Management Review where alternative management frameworks and principles for allocating fish stocks to ensure maximum benefit to the community are examined.

Report To The Minister For Agriculture, Forestry And Fisheries By The Integrated Fisheries Management Review Committee, Department Of Fisheries
Fisheries management papers
The Integrated Fisheries Management Review Committee was established to develop a strategy to integrate the management and sustainable use of fish resources. The Committee’s report proposes an alternative management framework and a set of guiding principles for allocating fish stocks to ensure optimal benefits are realised for the WA community. The report does not, and was not intended to, address specific allocation issues in particular fisheries – this will be a function of the framework and processes put in place following this review.
The Balanced Scorecard At Philips Electronics, Andra Gumbus, Bridget M. Lyons
The Balanced Scorecard At Philips Electronics, Andra Gumbus, Bridget M. Lyons
WCBT Faculty Publications
The drive to implement the balanced scorecard at Philips Electronics came from the top down - as a directive from the Board of Management in Europe to all Philips divisions and companies worldwide. The directive went to each of the companies and their quality departments, with the effort in the medical division headed by the Quality Steering Committee that reports to the president of Philips Medical Systems. Philips Electronics has used the balanced scorecard to align company vision, focus employees on how they fit into the big picture, and educate them on what drives the business. An essential aid to …
The Choice Between Joint Venture And Wholly Owned Subsidiary: An Institutional Perspective, Daphne W. Yiu, Shige Makino
The Choice Between Joint Venture And Wholly Owned Subsidiary: An Institutional Perspective, Daphne W. Yiu, Shige Makino
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The study of foreign entry-mode choice has been based almost exclusively on transaction-cost theory. This theory focuses mainly on the impacts of firm- and industry-specific factors on the choice of entry mode, taking the effects of country-specific contextual factors as constant or less important. In contrast, the institutional perspective emphasizes the importance of the influence of both institutional forces embedded in national environments and decision makers' cognitive constraints on the founding conditions of new ventures. Still, this theoretical perspective has yet to provide insights into how institutional factors influence the choice of foreign entry mode. The primary goal of the …

Relationships Between Accountability, Job Satisfaction, And Trust, Peg Thoms, Jennifer J. Dose, Kimberly S. Scott
Business Educator Scholarship
With the trend toward self-management comes increasing accountability of individuals to their coworkers and organizations. There is an implicit assumption that workers like self-management and the accompanying accountability, despite little supporting empirical evidence. This study examines the idea that workers’ perceptions of their level of accountability are related to their job satisfaction. A significant correlation was found between job satisfaction and perceived accountability to coworkers and perceived accountability to management. In addition, we found that accountability to both coworkers and management was positively related to trust in supervisors and managers. However, only two aspects of accountability—manager and coworker awareness—seem to …

Internationalization, Globalization, And Capability-Based Strategy, Stephen Tallman, Karin Fladmoe-Lindquist
Internationalization, Globalization, And Capability-Based Strategy, Stephen Tallman, Karin Fladmoe-Lindquist
Management Faculty Publications
Current trends appear to suggest that globally integrated strategies are the wave of the future for many industries, but no theoretically sound, firm-level model explains this situation. International business models explain industry trends from economic perspectives, and organizational theory is beginning to examine the organizing principles of multinational firms, but a gap exists in explaining the strategic motivations of multinational firms as they expand and integrate worldwide. This article develops a capability-driven, as opposed to market-driven, framework of multinational strategy. This contingent framework explains the organizational consequences of international expansion and global integration depending on the capability types, capability strategies, …

Bridgeport Hospital and Healthcare Services (BHHS) in Bridgeport, Conn., a part of the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS), embraced the balanced scorecard because it had been experiencing a loss in revenue and income due to managed care penetration in the local marketplace. This hospital is not alone in facing financial pressures. The balanced scorecard provides the framework for measuring performance in a complex and changing medical environment. Still retaining financial measures, the following drivers of financial success are incorporated into Bridgeport's scorecard: quality clinical outcomes; expert clinical care providers; satisfied patients, doctors, and staff; and volume and market-share growth. …

Exchanging Preliminary Information In Concurrent Engineering: Alternative Coordination Strategies, Christian Terwiesch, Christoph H. Loch, Arnoud De Meyer
Exchanging Preliminary Information In Concurrent Engineering: Alternative Coordination Strategies, Christian Terwiesch, Christoph H. Loch, Arnoud De Meyer
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Successful application of concurrent development processes (concurrent engineering) requires tight coordination. To speed development, tasks often proceed in parallel by relying on preliminary information from other tasks, information that has not yet been finalized. This frequently causes substantial rework using as much as 50% of total engineering capacity. Previous studies have either described coordination as a complex social process, or have focused on the frequency, but not the content, of information exchanges. Through extensive fieldwork in a high-end German automotive manufacturer, we develop a framework of preliminary information that distinguishes information precision and information stability. Information precision refers to the …

The objectives of the series were to consolidate expertise in financing and coordinating projects that combine conservation and development on the landscape, and to identify key areas of unmet need that could be addressed by the NE/EFC. Each discussion entailed several case study presentations and facilitated discussion about what works, what doesn’t work, and what might work in financing and coordinating efforts that combine conservation and development. "Do Women Really Make Better Leaders Than Men?" : An Update, James S. Pounder
"Do Women Really Make Better Leaders Than Men?" : An Update, James S. Pounder
Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series
Women are continuing to make a major impact through their participation in organizations and their ownership of businesses and it is reasonable to assume that the number of women taking up significant roles in society will increase in the future. The growing impact of women in the workforce has kept the leadership style of women on the research agenda. Within the leadership literature, writers lamenting the lack of women in senior management positions do so primarily on the basis that modern organizations need the very style of leadership that comes naturally to women. By contrast, a number of studies have …

It is based oil a case study of ail actual implementation by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with a number of other organizations to upgrade the capabilities of automotive component suppliers in India, to enable them to supply to world-class Manufacturers. We draw upon the traditional literature available on new product and service development for firms introducing new products and services for maximizing profit, and contrast those approaches with the approach adopted by nonprofit …

Exploring Business-To-Business Marketsites, Mark Barratt, Karsten Rosdahl
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Business-to-business (B2B) marketsites are quickly becoming one of the major issues for companies in their search for opportunities to improve visibility of their trading activities and sources of further cost reduction. The paper begins with a synthesis of potential benefits resulting from participation in marketsites and then provides a number of initial classifications of marketsites. The paper then introduces some of the major inhibitors and enablers of marketsites and views these from a number of perspectives such as the structure of marketsites, the degree of centricity and the types of products purchased through such marketsites. Finally, some recommendations for further …

The Role Of Academic/Industry Partnerships In The Development Of Supply Chain Managers, Edward Sweeney
The Role Of Academic/Industry Partnerships In The Development Of Supply Chain Managers, Edward Sweeney
Conference papers
The need for improvement in the logistics and supply chain management capability of companies in Ireland is becoming increasingly recognised. One of the main bottlenecks currently is the shortage of supply chain management professionals. Education and training has a fundamental role to play if the supply of suitably qualified human resource is to be addressed in a meaningful way. Recent research indicates that demand for people with the right knowledge and skills greatly exceed supply. There are numerous techniques and technologies which can facilitate improvement in a company’s supply chain capability. However, experience has shown that these tools alone can …
