Purpose – This study investigates the relationships between innovation, quality, productivity, and customer satisfaction in pure service companies. Previous studies have shown a negative relationship between quality and productivity in services. However, we argue the two can be positively related when innovation is present.

Design/methodology/approach – We develop and test our hypotheses using the secondary data from the COMPUSTAT, KLD STAT, and the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). We test our hypotheses using ordinary least squares regression and conduct additional testing using path analysis.

Findings – The findings show that quality and productivity are positively related when innovation is present …

The Shadow Side Of Teaching Classroom As Organization, Stacie Chappell, Debby Thomas Jan 2018

The Shadow Side Of Teaching Classroom As Organization, Stacie Chappell, Debby Thomas

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Classroom as organization (CAO) is an approach at the extreme end of an experiential learning intensity continuum (Sleeth & Brown, 1984). While proponents suggest they would never go back to a teacher-centered classroom, CAO has not become widely adopted since its initial description by Cohen (1976). We argue this is, in part, because of shadow elements that may discourage faculty in both initial adoption and persistence in the journey from novice to master. This article reports the authors reflexive process related to the shadow elements they encountered as early adopters of the CAO methodology. The paper begins with a brief …

The Comparative Roles Of Third Country Nationals (Tcns) And Host Country Nationals (Hcns) In Expatriate Adjustment: A Theoretical Approach, Timothy Veach

Expatriate managers often face difficulties adjusting to professional, cultural and environmental differences when performing overseas assignments. Failure of an expatriate manager to adjust to the foreign work and living environment may undermine an entire overseas project. A broad spectrum of factors determining the success of expatriate adjustment has been explored in the research. Specifically, interaction with Host Country Nationals (HCNs), leading to the inclusion of such HCNs in an expatriate’s support network, has been identified as an important determinant of successful adjustment of expatriate managers. However, many firms, including Korean construction firms, send large numbers of Third Country Nationals (TCNs) …

The strategy to improve business results through globalization has become increasingly common. Success in reaping the business value intended from a globalization strategy is, unfortunately, not as common. As national boundaries blur and everyone grows more connected through global collaboration, the dynamics of organizational life grow more complex. These complexities offer challenge, confusion, and frustration – but also great opportunity! The key to achieving improved business results does not hinge on strategies alone, but also on our ability to effectively lead global product and service development teams to successfully execute the strategies. Those struggling the most are the practitioners who …

Self-Construal Orientation: Validation Of An Instrument And A Study Of The Relationship To Leadership Communication Style, Craig E. Johnson Jan 1999

Self-Construal Orientation: Validation Of An Instrument And A Study Of The Relationship To Leadership Communication Style, Craig E. Johnson

Faculty Publications - College of Business

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to test rigorously the measurement equivalence of the Independent and Interdependent Self-Construal Scales (Gudykunst et al., 1994) across three cultural groups and for males and females, and (b) to determine the comparative amount of varianc,e in self-perceived leadership communication style that can be predicted by self-construal orientation, culture, and biological sex. College students from the United States (n = 224), New Zealand (n = 218), and the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan (n = 228) responded to the self-construal scales and the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (Hemphill & Coons, 1957). Results of …
