More than 3,000 microfinancing institutions (MFIs) in developing countries provide financial assistance to the needy poor who are denied access to institutional credit from other sources. This study’s motivation comes from the importance of MFIs and the lack of knowledge about them. Adopting the balanced scorecard (BSC) model, this exploratory study investigates the critical performance measures that MFIs need to emphasize in their performance reporting to drive high performance. The study first argues that four dimensions (sustainability, increasing the outreach, depth of outreach, and portfolio at risk) are needed to measure the performance of MFIs, and then analyzes the impact …

Transnational diasporan entrepreneurs are migrants and their descendants who establish entrepreneurial activities that span the national business environments of their countries of origin and countries of residence. We explore how business incubators contribute to the economic development of emerging markets by organizing their programs to bridge the institutional divides that transnational diaspora entrepreneurs face when establishing their multi-territorial ventures in these markets. Drawing on qualitative fieldwork conducted in the Netherlands during 2007, we present the case study of IntEnt, an incubator providing services exclusively to transnational diasporan entrepreneurs. We show here that adventure tourism leads to transfer of tacit knowledge between international visitors and local residents in developing destinations; and that motivations for the locals include money and employment, social capital, and individual enjoyment. Over the past half century, adventure tourism has grown from decentralised domestic outdoor recreation, to a large international commercial industry. Many tours bring urban clients from developed nations to rural areas in developing nations, where there are icon sites for specific adventure activities (Buckley, 2010).

This paper argues that business school scholarship can be seen as the example par excellence of what we are calling extreme neo-liberalism. By extreme neo-liberalism we mean the coexistence in the same sphere of extreme externalization of costs and extreme regulation of the sources of value. We argue that this condition is most obvious in the research audits conducted in Britain, and spreading globally, audits that record both the extreme externalization in business scholarship of all the sources of the wealth expropriated by business, and at the same time, regulate the very labour that produces this extreme self-regulation. The competitive bid process used by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to procure food supplies and transportation services for humanitarian food aid is subject to bidder gaming that can increase prices and deter competition. Additionally, suppliers and carriers are matched after bid submission, preventing synergies from coordinated planning. Given these concerns, we determine the optimal auction mechanism to minimize gaming then justify pre-bid planning between suppliers and carriers using properties of the cost distribution functions. We operationalize these changes with a uniform price auction. The improved mechanism should deter gaming, enhance bid participation, and increase delivered food aid volumes.

This chapter explores whether current accounting technology fulfils the stewardship and accountability information needs of family business owners. As the influences on contemporary accounting are both conceptual and contextual we frame our discussion in terms of both the knowledge foundations of accounting, as informed by various conceptions of the firm, and stakeholder theory. We posit that if prevailing conceptions of the firm impact the knowledge foundations of accounting, and subsequently the nature and form of accounting practice, then it is the conceptions of influential stakeholders that can define the accounting change agenda and affect contemporary accounting practice. We develop a novel analytical framework to study the role of collective action in the formation of new markets. Using supply and demand uncertainty as two central dimensions underlying all market formation efforts, we theorize under what conditions collective action is necessary for the successful formation of a market and examine the role and form of coordination. To do this, we identify tactics utilized by actors seeking to form a new market and three important contingency factors that impact formation success: returns to contributions, substitutability of contributions, and interest heterogeneity.
