This quantitative research correlational study aimed to determine the effects of time budget pressure on the auditor and whether those effects impact audit quality. The study population consisted of active external auditors registered with a certified public accounting (CPA) license, employed by CPA firms, who hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree in accounting, and have at least one year of accounting experience auditing financial statements. The population consisted of 1,072. The sample size was 283 participants, and the number of respondents was 287. Audit Firm Culture: An Evolution Of The Audit Profession In Response To External Forces, Christina T. Alberti Jan 2022

Audit Firm Culture: An Evolution Of The Audit Profession In Response To External Forces, Christina T. Alberti

2022

The COVID-19 pandemic is disrupting business operations throughout the world, including the working procedures of audit professionals. Yet, to date, research on COVID-19’s impact on auditing is limited. This is despite its potential long-term implications. Thus, my dissertation uses a mix of research methods to examine auditors’ response to, and regulators’ evaluation of auditors’ response to, COVID-19.

The first paper (co-authored) synthesizes research on audit firm culture (AFC) over the past decade, reviewing recent developments in research on AFC and its influence on audit quality and auditors’ work attitudes. Using a three-phase model based on prior research and professional guidance, …

The State Of Ohio’S Auditors, The Enumeration Of Population And The Project Of Eugenics, Moe Faroukh Aug 2021

The State Of Ohio’S Auditors, The Enumeration Of Population And The Project Of Eugenics, Moe Faroukh

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

This research focuses on how state auditors and superintendents in the State of Ohio participated in the Enumeration process between 1800 and the late 1900s. It focuses around the unexpected nature of auditors carrying out this work. Normally, auditors would review financial statements not count people in such questionable circumstances. The project is essentially trying to piece together from fragmentary historical documents to understand as much as possible why and how these activities were carried out and the role of auditor’s in these processes.

Accounting Conservatism Or Earnings Management: A Study Of The Allowance For Doubtful Accounts, Timothy G. Bryan May 2021

Accounting Conservatism Or Earnings Management: A Study Of The Allowance For Doubtful Accounts, Timothy G. Bryan

Faculty Submissions

This paper empirically examines the relationship between conservatism and earnings management in chemical and allied products manufacturers via an analysis of the allowance for doubtful accounts and bad debt expense. Data used in the study included total accounts receivable, the total allowance for uncollectible accounts, total assets, and other firm-level data from the COMPUSTAT database of North American firms for companies with the standardized industry code (SIC) of 28 which represents chemical and allied products manufacturers. Chemical and allied products manufacturers were deemed an ideal target for the study because the industry typically has large balances in accounts receivable and …

Does Media Exposure Affect Financial Reporting Quality Through Auditors?, Steven F. Cahan, Chen Chen, Rencheng Wang Jul 2020

Does Media Exposure Affect Financial Reporting Quality Through Auditors?, Steven F. Cahan, Chen Chen, Rencheng Wang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine whether the media has an indirect corporate governance effect on financial reporting quality (FRQ) that operates through auditors. This occurs because greater media coverage can magnify an auditor's business risk by exposing the auditor to more potential litigation and reputation damage if an audit failure occurs. We use a path analysis to examine the direct and indirect channels of media corporate governance. We find a positive association between media coverage and FRQ that is mediated by audit fees, and the results are stronger for firms with greater incentives to engage in earnings manipulation. In contrast, we find no …

The Evolution Of The Auditor And Auditing Profession: The Impact Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Kylie Pollack, Scott Delanty May 2020

The Evolution Of The Auditor And Auditing Profession: The Impact Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Kylie Pollack, Scott Delanty

Honors Thesis

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) was arguably the most influential piece of legislation passed to affect the accounting profession. Over the past nearly two decades since SOX was enacted, the auditor and auditing profession has evolved. The public’s perceptions of auditors and the profession have improved as a result of major legislation such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. This paper explores the evolution of the auditor and audit profession over the course of three different time periods to understand the function of the auditor. This paper is broken down into four major components. First, this paper explores what …

The Impact Of Big Data On Audit Evidence And The Level Of Assurance, Sachin Yadav May 2020

The Impact Of Big Data On Audit Evidence And The Level Of Assurance, Sachin Yadav

Honors Theses

This study seeks to establish the relationship between Big Data and its impact on the quality of audit evidence and the level of assurance perceived by the end-users. Currently, auditors rely on sampling to provide reasonable assurance that a company’s financial statements are materially in accordance with a country’s Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). With Big Data, auditors can minimize the risk posed by sampling, and therefore, provide a reasonable level assurance. The present study examines financial statement users’ perceptions of the level of assurance when auditors present unqualified opinions using Big Data during the audit engagement. It observes this …

The Relationship Of Cognitive Effort, Information Acquisition Preferences And Risk To Simulated Auditor–Client Negotiation Outcomes, Gary Kleinman, Dan Palmon, Kyunghee Yoon Sep 2014

The Relationship Of Cognitive Effort, Information Acquisition Preferences And Risk To Simulated Auditor–Client Negotiation Outcomes, Gary Kleinman, Dan Palmon, Kyunghee Yoon

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The auditor–client relationship is a legally-mandated relationship in which one party, the auditor, is hired and paid by the auditee (client) to inform third party stakeholders as to whether the client firm’s financial statements are presented in conformity with national financial accounting standards. When these statements do not meet the criteria for acceptable financial statements, a negotiation situation may arise in which the auditor is presumed to act in the best interests of shareholders and creditors who have no independent knowledge of the auditor’s findings. The client management may then feel forced to defend its numbers. The result is a …

Investor And Client Responses To The First Pcaob Sanction And Part Ii Disclosure Of A Big N Auditor, Leah Elena Muriel Aug 2013

Investor And Client Responses To The First Pcaob Sanction And Part Ii Disclosure Of A Big N Auditor, Leah Elena Muriel

Doctoral Dissertations

I examine investor and client responses to the first PCAOB sanction and the first release of “Part II – Issues Related to Quality Controls” of a Big N auditor. I examine the following: the stock market reaction to the Part II disclosure, investors’ perceptions of earnings quality after both events using the earnings response coefficient (ERC), and client dismissals after the sanction. I find that December year-end clients that operate in highly litigated industries or those with auditor tenure greater than three years are more likely to dismiss Deloitte in the post-sanction period. For the sample of U.S. highly litigated …

The Auditor’S Report On Internal Control & Fraud Detection Responsibility: A Comparison Of French And U.S. Users’ Perceptions, Benjamin P. Foster, Guy M. Mcclain, Trimbak Shastri May 2013

The Auditor’S Report On Internal Control & Fraud Detection Responsibility: A Comparison Of French And U.S. Users’ Perceptions, Benjamin P. Foster, Guy M. Mcclain, Trimbak Shastri

Faculty Scholarship

The AICPA recently finished a harmonization project to converge U.S. audit standards with those of the International Audit and Assurance Standards Board. The assumption implicit in this project is that users of financial statements will benefit from a converged, or consistent set of audit standards. Additionally, the AICPA’s clarified auditing standard AU-C700, Audit Conclusions and Reporting, now requires explicit acknowledgement of the auditor’s responsibility for fraud procedures in the auditor’s report, which is the focus of advisory committees in both the U.S. Department of Treasury and the European Commission. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate how users …

User Information Risk: How It Improves Audit Quality, Jack R. Ethridge, Treba Marsh Jan 2010

User Information Risk: How It Improves Audit Quality, Jack R. Ethridge, Treba Marsh

Faculty Publications

Audited financial statements are the basis for the communication of essential financial information. Accordingly, the reliability of the financial statements is of extreme importance to all parties involved in the process. This paper identifies the three primary parties as the organization, the auditor, and the user and recommends the user play an increased role in this process. The user should be allowed to analyze the quality of the auditor and audit process based upon five critical factors that should be required to be disclosed by the auditor. This paper discusses the five factors and how each one could benefit the …

An Empirical Analysis Of Auditor Resignations, Harold Edward Davis Oct 2002

An Empirical Analysis Of Auditor Resignations, Harold Edward Davis

Doctoral Dissertations

There were two main objectives of this study. The first objective was to develop a theoretical model that will explain auditor resignations. To meet this objective, a model was developed which was primarily grounded in prior research related to auditor resignations as well as prior research addressing auditor switching. The second objective was to estimate the model at four different quarterly dates immediately prior to an event date (i.e., the resignation date) so that the effects of time on the explanatory power of the model and each independent variable could be ascertained. This objective was met by identifying and collecting …

A Negotiation-Oriented Model Of Auditor-Client Relationships, Gary Kleinman, Dan Palmon Jan 2000

A Negotiation-Oriented Model Of Auditor-Client Relationships, Gary Kleinman, Dan Palmon

Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The increasing frequency and complexity of inter-organizational relationships suggests that inter-organizational negotiations should represent an area of increasing concern to management and academicians. Unfortunately, there is little theorizing about, nor study of, these negotiations. The few extant models are heavily influenced by models of individual negotiating styles that are then raised to the inter-organizational level with minimal change. The model developed here attempts to provide a framework for understanding the context of these interorganizational negotiations by identifying and illuminating factors that influence the outcome of interactions in various long-term supplier relationships. Factors discussed include dynamic and stable environments, organizational cultures, …
