An Analysis Of Reinhold Niebuhr's Critique Of Martin Luther's Two Kingdom Doctrine, Jack Flachsbart Nov 1973

An Analysis Of Reinhold Niebuhr's Critique Of Martin Luther's Two Kingdom Doctrine, Jack Flachsbart

Master of Divinity Thesis

In one section of his book, The Nature and Destiny of Man, Reinhold Niebuhr constructs a critique of the Lutheran Reformation, and particularly of Martin Luther's theology as the formative theoretical base of Lutheran Reformation theology. ‘One of Niebuhr's specific charges was that the Lutheran Reformation was explicitly defeatist when confronting the problems of realizing justice in the collective life of man. Niebuhr lays a great deal of the blame for this “Lutheran defeatism" on Luther's formulation of the two kingdom doctrine and his application of it to legitimize the suppression by the government of the peasant revolt of 1525.

A Comparison Measurement Of Law And Gospel In Selected Sermons Of Saint Augustine, Bernard Of Clairvaux, Jonathan Edwards, Phillips Brooks, And Walter A. Maier, David Gunderlach Nov 1973

A Comparison Measurement Of Law And Gospel In Selected Sermons Of Saint Augustine, Bernard Of Clairvaux, Jonathan Edwards, Phillips Brooks, And Walter A. Maier, David Gunderlach

Master of Divinity Thesis

Our study has borne out the fact that Law and Gospel are indeed inherent in Scripture and not just a product of the Reformation, in that we have seen them both actively at work in the sermons we have studied. To a man, all five of our preachers, over a time span of some sixteen hundred years, have preached both Law and Gospel in their sermons.

A History Of The Development Of Lutheran Church—Canada And The Purposes For Its Autonomy, Paul Langohr

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this loaner is an attempt to understand why autonomy is such an appealing and satisfying answer to the question of Canadian and world mission for a Canadian Lutheran Church. It is an attempt to prove that as an American-based Church working in Canada she cannot work to her fullest potential nor to her most effective capacity.

A Study Of The Speech Philosophy Of Alexander Campbell And The Application Of That Philosophy, Rudy L. Morrow Sep 1973

A Study Of The Speech Philosophy Of Alexander Campbell And The Application Of That Philosophy, Rudy L. Morrow

Dissertations and Theses

A great religious Awakening was taking place in 1805 until the end of the Civil War. Religious debates became the order of the day, and were at least equal in importance to the political debates. Alexander Campbell was one of the leading debators of the period. He was born September 12, 1787, in Ireland, but moved to America in 1809, settling in western Virginia. In 1812, Alexander and his father, Thomas Campbell, launched what they called "The Restoration Movement", in which they were seeking for the unity of all Christians on the basis of the Bible.

The Doctrine Of Experience In The Philosophy Of Jonathan Edwards, Puritan Divine, Joseph S. Trachtenberg Jun 1973

The Doctrine Of Experience In The Philosophy Of Jonathan Edwards, Puritan Divine, Joseph S. Trachtenberg

Dissertations and Theses

A number of basic themes suggest themselves as focal points for a study of the thought of Jonathan Edwards. The dissertation is an attempt to argue that experience is one of them, and that an attentive eye to the doctrine of experience will reveal it as the unifying theme of his philosophy. Specifically, at the center of Edwards' aesthetic and religious vision there lies a rich and profound sense of experience, and of the relation of all things to some form of perception.

The evidence is to be found in Edwards' extensive published and unpublished writings. Among the several editions …

An Examination And Exposition Of Process-Thought And Extrapolation Of Its Themes For Theological Use, Christian Just May 1973

An Examination And Exposition Of Process-Thought And Extrapolation Of Its Themes For Theological Use, Christian Just

Master of Divinity Thesis

It is the expressed purpose of this study to investigate the possibilities for theological use of process philosophy. Within that scope and purpose, certain objects had to be met. First, it was necessary to understand as fully as possible the philosophical system itself. Second, certain judgements had to be made as to the availability of that system for theological and religious purposes. Finally, it was necessary to expand on the philosophical scheme to include certain theological notions that are not inherent in the system.

God As Phenomenon, Charles Yunghans May 1973

God As Phenomenon, Charles Yunghans

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper concerns itself with several approaches to a secular understanding of religious belief and deals briefly with the more or less explicit challenge they offer to the notion that there is in fact a God which communicates to man. This problem emerged for me as I encountered religious phenomenology and structuralism for the first time this year, and noted the obvious challenge they pose to traditional dogma. The answer I offer is one I really had not set out to achieve: a tentative acceptance of the results of these programs in the light of the system of Teilhard, the …

The Bultmannian Engima -- An Investigation Into The Concept Of Demythologization, Carlton Llewellyn Williams May 1973

The Bultmannian Engima -- An Investigation Into The Concept Of Demythologization, Carlton Llewellyn Williams

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Time and time again throughout the history of Christianity, scholars have challenged the traditional and orthodox Christian faith particularly on the point of hermeneutics. The Church has made vital reactions to such challenges and has incessantly utilized that which could be salvaged from the proposals and conclusions of these adversaries to clarify and formulate its beliefs. This should be the attitude of every Christian theologian as he seeks to exercise his role as a defender of the faith.

Interpreting the New Testament message in such a way that the modern man can readily understand it has been the object of …

The Theology Of Justus Menius, Alvin H. Horst May 1973

The Theology Of Justus Menius, Alvin H. Horst

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The primary purpose of this dissertation, therefore, is to provide a general systematic exposition of the theology of Justus Menius. To accomplish that purpose, it will be necessary to provide an historical overview of his life and activities. Menius never published a systematic theology. His books and writings, like Luther's, were responses to specific theological and ecclesiastical problems. For Menius, these problems were occasioned primarily by the interaction between the theological movement which originated in the university and the life of the local congregations. In order to get at Menius' theology, therefore, it is necessary to have an acquaintance with …

The Divine Nature Of God: A Study Of What Has Been Said And Taught About The Divine Nature Of God By Ancient And Modern Apostles And Prophets, Lester Young Moody

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis prominent teachings of the apostles and prophets were examined on the subject of the divine nature of God. These teachings indicate that among the elements of the divine nature of God is his Holy Spirit, his glory or the light which emanates from his person. God's glory, spirit and light were compared and analyzed to determine their relationship to each other. It was found that they perform the same roles and functions and are often used synonymously. Other aspects of the divine nature were examined, such as life, love, truth and goodness.

The terms omnipotence, omniscience and …
