Amor Fati In Jaco Van Dormael's Film, Mr. Nobody, Rebecca L. Smith Apr 2016

Amor Fati In Jaco Van Dormael's Film, Mr. Nobody, Rebecca L. Smith

Senior Theses and Projects

The argument in this thesis is how the philosophies of the German Frederich Nietzsche are portrayed throughout the Belgian director Jaco Van Dormael’s film Mr. Nobody (2009). Mr. Nobody is a film about every imaginable way one man’s life could unfold from every major and minor decision he makes. Nietzsche’s philosophy of Amor Fati, or love of fate, is portrayed by the film’s main character, Nemo Nobody (Jared Leto). Within the different quantum branches of Nemo’s life he portrays both the man of reason and the man of intuition; a topic central to Nietzsche’s philosophy. In the various timelines in …

The Project Of The Physician: An Inquiry Into The Nature Of Medicine, Alexander X. Shea

Senior Theses and Projects

The telos of this project is twofold – in Part I, I will attempt to solidify the goal of the physician in medical practice, and in Part II, I will examine the specific ways by which the doctor can actualize that goal. In other words, the central questions are: 1) What is the goal of the physician? and 2) How is the physician to accomplish or actualize that goal?

The Philosophy Of Anxiety, Julie B. Daniels Apr 2013

The Philosophy Of Anxiety, Julie B. Daniels

Senior Theses and Projects

In utter selfishness, my hope is for the following pursuit, to which my reader will be witness, ends in such a way that I am calmer and my reader is anxious. Within the framework of self- liberation, I aim to draw strong ties between personal experience, and the views held by various thinkers, including Martin Heidegger, Søren Kierkegaard, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Being and Time will serve as the lens through which I examine the texts of Søren Kierkegaard and Jean-Paul Sartre. Their philosophies on anxiety serve as a voice for those who grapple with the phenomenon. I aim to illuminate …

Philosophy Of Sports: Understanding How Friedrich Nietzsche And Magic Johnson Can Work Together, Karl Sandrich

Senior Theses and Projects

This thesis is an attempt to examine sports through the lens of philosophy with a particular focus on the multiple levels of sports experience. To break that sentence down, the philosophic part of the thesis is by not being comfortable with the easy answers when it comes to sports. So often when people think or talk about sports there is a wall of generally accepted answers and this is an attempt to hurdle that wall. The easy answers are more often than not simply the start of the questions. The multiple levels of sports refers to the fact that most …

A Discussion Of The Theological Implications Of Free Will In The Biblical Story Of The Exodus From Egypt, Michelle Okun Apr 2012

A Discussion Of The Theological Implications Of Free Will In The Biblical Story Of The Exodus From Egypt, Michelle Okun

Senior Theses and Projects

The exploration of free will and divine providence was a focus of medieval, specifically Jewish, philosophers. Three men wrote extensively about the subject: Philo of Alexandria, Saadia Gaon, and Moses Maimonides. All argued through textual proof and critical thinking that God was innocent and just throughout the occurences described in the Exodus from Egypt. Each man used principles they held to be true and textual evidence to defend God, prove the continued existence of free will, and the ability for divine providence to exist without interfering with free will. Through an exploration of the story of Creation, mind and knowledge, …
