Northwestern Amazonian Spanish As A Macro-Region: Current Research And Future Directions, Ileana Margarita Jara Yupanqui
Northwestern Amazonian Spanish As A Macro-Region: Current Research And Future Directions, Ileana Margarita Jara Yupanqui
International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest
The Amazon rainforest, home to many and diverse indigenous language populations, expands over a vast territory in South America, the most extensive river system in the world. In the western area, Spanish coexists with many indigenous languages since colonial times. New varieties of Amazonian Spanish emerged in this context of long-term language contact. These varieties are understudied, although research has increased in the last decade. Recent works show that Spanish linguistic features are shared across political borders and point to a macro-region. This paper discusses the socio-historical and linguistic contexts of the expansion of the Northwestern Amazonian Spanish in Colombia, …
Cultural Memory Conflicted In Post-Conflict Peru: Constructing Heroes And Villains La Hora Final And La Casa Rosada, Reed Peets
Honors Theses
Building on this same theoretical platform, this project uses two critically-acclaimed contemporary cinematic representations of the internal armed conflict—La hora final and La casa rosada—as reflections of the ways in which the Peruvian cultural products of today are leveraged to reorchestrate collective understandings of the past.
Las Voces Desde La Liminalidad Sino-Peruana: –Una Lectura Comparativa De Mongolia Y La Vida No Es Una Tómbola–, Jing Tan
LSU Master's Theses
Chinese immigrants first arrived in Peru in the mid-19th Century. Since then, the Sino-Peruvian community has lived through myriad vicissitudes. Today, despite its indisputable influence in Peru’s history, it is still largely invisible in society, just as the concept of an Asian Latin American identity remains elusive in the national consciousness. In the literary and academic world, the scarcity of a voice highlighting Chinese legacies in Peruvian literature is echoed by the dearth of such a voice in the criticism regarding works by Sino-Peruvian writers about Sino-Peruvian experiences.
This comparative analysis engages with two novels that evince deep parallelism with …
Catholicism In Context: Religious Practice In Latin America, Gustavo Morello Sj
Catholicism In Context: Religious Practice In Latin America, Gustavo Morello Sj
Journal of Global Catholicism
A critical problem to study Catholicism in the context of Latin American modernity, is that the conceptual tools we use to study religion were designed to understand the transformations that modernity provoked in European religiosity. Studies on the religion of Latin Americans have largely explored the religiosity of the population through surveys that measure attendance, adherence and affiliation. While some anthropologists have explored religious practices among particular groups, we do not know how ordinary, urban Latin Americans practice religion. To fill this gap, a group of researchers from Boston College, Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, Catholic University of Córdoba, and …

Wilder/Dargent Collection About Peruvian Author Ricardo Palma (1833-1919), Lawrence Scrivani Sm
Finding Aids
Ricardo Palma (1833-1919) was a literary figure in Peru as well as a leader in culture and politics. He played a role in the War of the Pacific (1879-1883), in the rebuilding of the National Library of Peru destroyed in that war, and in the founding of the Peruvian Academy of Language. His principal work, the Tradiciones Peruanas, was read widely throughout Iberian America and influenced writing styles. The Wilder/Dargent Collection assembles all of the published writings of Palma, either as facsimiles of first editions or as later republications. Added to this is a gathering of scholarly and journalistic writing …
Making The Case For Genocide, The Forced Sterilization Of Indigenous Peoples Of Peru, Ñusta P. Carranza Ko
Making The Case For Genocide, The Forced Sterilization Of Indigenous Peoples Of Peru, Ñusta P. Carranza Ko
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Peru’s national health program Programa de Salud Reproductiva y Planificación Familiar (PSRPF) aimed to uphold women’s reproductive rights and address the scarcity in maternity related services. Despite these objectives, during PSRPF’s implementation the respect for women’s rights were undermined with the forced sterilization of women predominantly of indigenous, poor, and rural backgrounds. This study considers the forced sterilization of indigenous women as a genocide. Making the case for genocide has not been done previously with this particular case. Using the normative markers of the Genocide Convention, this study categorically sets forced sterilization victims from the state-led-policy as victims of genocide, …

Subjectivities Of Struggle: Charting Inscriptions Of Violence And Refusal On The “Cuerpo Territorio” Of Peru’S Defensoras, Natalia Guzmán Solano
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“Subjectivities of Struggle: Inscriptions of Violence and Refusal on the ‘Cuerpo Territorio’ of Peru’s Defensoras” calls into question the colonial assumptions underpinning contemporary understandings of extractivism. The sixteen months of ethnographic research I conducted with the defensoras (women ecoterritorial defenders) of Cajamarca is situated at the fraught extractive frontier where social conflict paralyzed the expansion of a large-scale mining project and generated a coalitional struggle against extractive-led economic development. This dissertation conceptualizes extractivism as a modern/colonial product of power and knowledge that has feminized the land and inhabitants from the time of the European invasion of the Americas. While recent …

Barely Bonded: Affective Politics And The Gendered Struggle For Water In Villa El Salvador, Lima, Peru, Kyle Woolley, Kelly Moore
Sociology and Criminology Department Faculty Works
Affect is increasingly understood as a critical element of political life and collective action in Latin America and elsewhere. It is critical to generating participation in collective action projects, sustaining or collapsing action, and how participants interpret the meanings and values of a project and the social relationships within it. More broadly, affective political experiences are markers of the sense of belonging or disaffection from others and broader political systems that are central to civic life. The meanings of participation after projects fade are often attributed mainly to the collective events themselves, and draw on one-off interviews after the events …

La Integración Y Percepción De Los Inmigrantes Venezolanos En Tacna Y Prácticas Transnacionalistas, Darla Chavez Chavez
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Staging A Modern Nation: The Art And Architecture Of The Peruvian Pavilion At The 1939/40 New York World’S Fair, Alida R. Jekabson
Theses and Dissertations
At the 1939/40 New York World’s Fair, the Peruvian government installed a multimedia display of objects and products in a foreign pavilion. An examination of the building and its contents provides a basis to understand how art and commerce work together to construct narratives of authenticity, nationalism and modernity.
Working Lives: Artistic Solidarity In Revolutionary Peru (1960–1980), Jose R. Chavarry
Working Lives: Artistic Solidarity In Revolutionary Peru (1960–1980), Jose R. Chavarry
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the discourses and experiences of cultural work as a form of intellectual and artistic solidarity in Peru during the 1960s and 1970s. Amid the broader Latin American and global spirit of revolution, anti-imperialism and Third World liberation, in Peru these decades saw a radical transformation in society where rural and urban masses rose against a traditional political and socioeconomic system that maintained colonial structures of domination and oppression of marginalized populations. In an attempt to rein in this desborde popular, as it became known, the nationalist and populist Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces and a …

Lords from the Desert
This work explores a reality that is little talked about: how the most prestigious pre-Columbian art exhibits in the United States hide a murky origin. From looting of temples to illicit art trafficking, to smuggling and collectors’ affairs, the pieces gain value in proportion to the social prestige of their owner. Along the way, the most important is lost: research that provides context and allows us to know history. The First World wins a seductive, but simplistic story. The Third World, from which all these cultures emerge, loses patrimony and possibilities of understanding themselves. A pair …
Shiwilu, Pilar Valenzuela
Shiwilu, Pilar Valenzuela
World Languages and Cultures Faculty Articles and Research
"Shiwilu, also known as Jebero (ISO jeb), is a critically endangered Kawapanan language spoken in the District of Jeberos, in northeastern Peru. Kawapanan languages exhibit a “mixed” areal profile, in that they combine structural properties typical of Western Amazonian languages with features specifically associated to the Central Andean families Quechuan and Aymaran (Valenzuela 2015). On June 23, 2016, Shiwilu became the first Peruvian language to be declared National Cultural Heritage (Resolución Viceministerial N° 073-2016-VMPCIC-MC). The present text was delivered orally in 2013 by one of the youngest native speakers, Mr. Fidel Lomas Chota, who was 59 years old at the …

Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa’s History of the Incas (1572). A Critical Study and Annotated Edition.
by Aleksín H. Ortega
Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa wrote his polemic and undoubtedly political History of the Incas at the request of Francisco de Toledo (Viceroy of Peru, 1569-1581). Toledo wanted to deliver to the Spanish King a version of Incan history which could subsequently be used as an ideological tool in the search of legal and moral arguments to defend the Andean colonization by the Spanish monarchy. Since his arrival to the Peruvian territories, Toledo embarked on a long personal visit to …

Flora Tristan’S Plural Identities In "Peregrinaciones De Una Paria": Challenging And Reproducing Existing Power Structures, Nancy Tille-Victorica
The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal
This article analyses the ways in which Franco-Peruvian author Flora Tristan crosses the border of her plural identities in her famous travel book Peregrinaciones de una paria (1837). It especially looks at how she performs as a male in certain situations and how these are generally associated with her French identity. It also considers her identification as a woman and how it is linked to her Peruvian identity. These examinations reveal how Tristan actually redefines herself as a pariah and how her definition differs from that of outcast imposed on her in France prior to her departure for Peru.

Review Of: Rethinking Community From Peru: The Political Philosophy Of José María Arguedas By Irina Alexandra Feldman, Blanca Aranda Gómez García Ph.D
Modern & Classical Languages

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Peruvian Political Theatre And Its Connections To Human Rights Movements, Luis Ramos-Garcia
Peruvian Political Theatre And Its Connections To Human Rights Movements, Luis Ramos-Garcia
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This essay describes and theorizes the work of contemporary Peruvian theatre as defined by the political atmosphere that reigned from 1970s to the early 21st century. From the beginning, this type of political theatre served different masters and was produced for different consumers. For example, Shining Path Guerrilla used theatre (1978-1983) in order to recruit soldiers for its war against the government; on the other hand Peruvian groups used theatre to protest against human rights abuses by the government and communist guerrillas alike; and even the government itself used performance to convince the public that it was defeating leftist guerrillas. …
A Brief Historical Account Of Trends In Contemporary Peruvian Cinema, Sebastián Pimentel
A Brief Historical Account Of Trends In Contemporary Peruvian Cinema, Sebastián Pimentel
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This essay is an overview of the thematic and stylistic tendencies in Peruvian cinema starting with the work of Armando Robles Godoy. It also focuses on the effect of the Law 19327 of 1973 , which was responsible for the formation of a group of influential filmmakers led by Francisco Lombardi. At the beginning of the 21st century, female directors like Claudia Llosa and Rosario Garcia Montero achieved recognition for their cinematic visions of a traumatic Peruvian past. The Vega brothers and Gianfranco Quatrinni also contribute with their styles to an existential sntdy of the Peruvian identity. From the provinces …

Ayacucho, Goodbye And The Portrayal Of A Nation's Contradictions, Oswaldo Gavidia Cannon
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
During the 1980s and early 1990s, Peru lived difficult times with the escalation of terrorism. People living in the Andean rural areas were caught between two fires- the terrorists and the military sent to control the latter- and many innocent people were killed or disappeared. Based on these events, Julio Ortega wrote the novella Ayacucho, Goodbye. In this narrative, the dead body of an indigenous peasant leaves his grave in Ayacucho and begins a journey to Lima, the capital of Peru, looking for the parts of his body that were not buried with him, which is really a quest …

Ams Radiocarbon Dates From Prehispanic Fortifications In The Huaura Valley, Central Coast Of Peru, Margaret Brown Vega, Nathan Craig, Brendan Culleton, Douglas Kennett, Gerbert Asencios Lindo
Margaret Brown Vega
In this paper, we report 11 AMS radiocarbon dates from 8 Prehispanic fortifications located in the Huaura Valley, central coast of Perú. Small fragments of organic material embedded in preserved mud mortar in architecture, and samples from construction layers exposed by looter’s holes were used to date architectural features without undertaking extensive excavations. These dates contribute toward refining the chronology of fort building in the valley, and provide a test for assumptions about temporal change and architectural style. The results indicate that fortifications date to at least 3 periods. These data provide a starting point for exploring the occurrence of …

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Articles and Research
Shiwilu (a.k.a. Jebero) is a critically endangered language from Peruvian Amazonia and one of the two members of the Kawapanan linguistic family. Most of its nearly 30 remaining fluent speakers live in and around the village of Jeberos (District of Jeberos, Province of Alto Amazonas, Loreto Region), at approximately 5° S, 75° W. The documentation of Shiwilu is scarce and no survey grammar is available. Until very recently, the only trained linguist who had worked on Shiwilu was John Bendor- Samuel, who carried out fieldwork in 1955–1956 and completed a doctoral thesis in 1958 (see Bendor-Samuel 1981 [1958]). Utilization Of Lithic Resources At Huerequeque, An Initial Period (2150–1000 B.C.) Site, Casma Valley, Peru, Daniel Wilson Nicholson
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The Casma Valley on the north coast of Peru contains a high concentration of Initial Period (2150-1000 B.C.) sites. One of these sites, Huerequeque, is located approximately 25 km inland in the Sechin branch of the river on a hillside. The site contains a mound and plaza complex, intermediate architecture, and residential architecture. My project considers the resources needed for constructions and tools. I identify what was utilized and discuss trends in construction material, collection methods and argue a “convenient construction” model. Included in my discussion of architecture, I consider the amount of human power necessary for these efforts. Regarding …

Available informatic resources contribute to the archaeological process allowing to have a more detailed register of the evidence and leading to an efficient information management. Digital reconstruction of sites, as developed all over the world, can be helpful to iconographic research, data massification and especially for the preservation of cultural heritage. In this article, a proposal for a virtual reconstruction of Chan Chan in the peruvian North Coast is made. This paper presents a brief summary of the project development, giving the outlines, research phases and the possible contributions and perspectives.
