A Brief History Of Oyster Aquaculture In Rhode Island, Michael Rice Nov 2006

A Brief History Of Oyster Aquaculture In Rhode Island, Michael Rice

Michael A Rice

The history of the development of oyster aquaculture is reviewed, beginning with pre-colonial shellfishing by the Native American Narragansetts and Wampanoags of Narragansett Bay. Leasing of estuarine waters for aquaculture of oysters began with legislation by the Rhode Island General Assembly before the turn of the 19th Century. Legal developments during the 19th Century led to the expansion of oyster aquaculture to the point that about 21,000 acres of Rhode Island's estuarine and coastal waters were leased for oyster farming by 1910. Industrialization, sewage pollution, siltation, the Hurricane of 1938 and socio-political changes in the 1920s and 1930s led to …

Curry On Long, 'Mapp V. Ohio: Guarding Against Unreasonable Searches And Seizures' (Book Review), Lynne E. Curry

Lynne E. Curry

In June, 1961, the U. S. Supreme Court delivered its opinion in Mapp v. Ohio, thereby launching the "due process revolution" in which the Court, under Chief Justice Earl Warren, expanded the universe of rights and protections guaranteed to individuals in the criminal justice system. Justice Tom C. Clark's majority opinion held that the "exclusionary rule," by which judges barred evidence gathered in the course of violating the Fourth Amendment's protections against unreasonable searches and seizures from being entered in federal trials, was constitutionally required and thus also applied in state criminal proceedings. The Mapp ruling was controversial in …

Lion In Winter – Tomás Moro Na Nossa Estação. Diálogos Com O Direito Constitucional, O Cristianismo E A Utopia Social, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha May 2006

Lion In Winter – Tomás Moro Na Nossa Estação. Diálogos Com O Direito Constitucional, O Cristianismo E A Utopia Social, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

The Power Of Oklahoma City, Adam Arenson Apr 2006

The Power Of Oklahoma City, Adam Arenson

Adam Arenson

I can’t remember what I was doing at 9:02 a.m. Central Time, on April 19th, 1995, when the bombing happened. It was a Wednesday. How did I hear? I think I knew of the tragic events only later in the day. I did not stand around the television that morning, as I and so many did on 9/11. Last week, a business meeting took me to Oklahoma for the first time. The impact of the memorial was instant and visceral. The memorial works. And my hopes for such a successful memorial at the World Trade Center site are fading. I …

Economics: Labor And Health In South Asia By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel Mar 2006

Economics: Labor And Health In South Asia By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

In Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, inferior terms of women’s employment perpetuate their subordination in family and society and impact their health adversely. How women are paid and valued in the fields, factories, and offices has direct bearing on women workers’ status within and outside the workplace. The statistical profile of women’s work in South Asia reveals ahigh maternal mortality rate, adverse sex ratios, low levels of literacy, the highest work participation of women in agriculture, and women’s estimated earned income as less than half that of men, signifying the undervaluation and unpaid nature of women’s productive economic …

Palestinian Refugees: Dethroning The Nation At The Crowing Of The 'Statelet', Randa Farah Dec 2005

Palestinian Refugees: Dethroning The Nation At The Crowing Of The 'Statelet', Randa Farah

Randa R Farah Dr.

The Oslo agreements proposed a two-state solution for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict: a Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza existing alongside Israel. However, the refugees’ right of return and claims to land and property expropriated by Israel during the 1948 were removed from the equation, although they represent the core issues in the conflict. Based on the territorial divisions that preceded the 1967 war, or the ‘green line’, the agreements implicitly rendered the 1948 war and its consequences for the majority of the Palestinian population a non-negotiable historical reality. In a manner of speaking, the crowning of the ‘state’ …

Continuing The Mission Of St. Vincent De Paul: Insights On Vincentian Leadership Practices At Depaul University, Marco Tavanti Dec 2005

Continuing The Mission Of St. Vincent De Paul: Insights On Vincentian Leadership Practices At Depaul University, Marco Tavanti

Marco Tavanti

The mission of St. Vincent de Paul was one that was absolutely clear and absolutely simple. His mission was to serve. His mission was to provide service that empowered. His mission was to provide service that liberated. That service was provided to human beings, to people whom he recognized as being his brothers and sisters. He also provided to communities because communities are made up of human beings and you can’t liberate human beings, you can’t empower human beings, without empowering and liberating the communities they are a part of. And so DePaul University continues that mission of service, that …

Protestant Theological Writings On Angels In Post-Reformation Thought From 1565 To 1939, Andrew T.H Sulavik Dec 2005

Protestant Theological Writings On Angels In Post-Reformation Thought From 1565 To 1939, Andrew T.H Sulavik

Andrew T. Sulavik

This is an introductory survey of Protestant theological writings on the doctrine of angels expressed in systems of theology (primarily loci communes), treatises, and sermons produced during the post-Reformation era of scholastic orthodoxy. The topic has received little scholarly attention, but is of importance for the light it sheds on a significant theological era that is not well known for its prolific literary activity on angelology. It provides a frame of reference on bibliographical sources for this subject to scholars of historical theology, historians of Reforma- tion, Renaissance and Enlightenment thought, and those with interdisciplinary interests.

Emancipation Through Secularization: French Feminist Views Of Muslim Women’S Condition In Interwar Algeria, Sara L. Kimble Dec 2005

Emancipation Through Secularization: French Feminist Views Of Muslim Women’S Condition In Interwar Algeria, Sara L. Kimble

Sara L Kimble

The Populist Chameleon: The People's Party, Huey Long, George Wallace, And The Populist Argumentative Frame, Michael J. Lee Dec 2005

The Populist Chameleon: The People's Party, Huey Long, George Wallace, And The Populist Argumentative Frame, Michael J. Lee

Michael J Lee

This essay argues that a sustained form can be located in the complicated history of populist rhetoric. Despite its chameleonic qualities, the advancement of populism is constituted by alterations in the focus and content, not the structure, of populist activism. This structure, or what I term its argumentative frame, positions a virtuous people against a powerful enemy and expresses disdain toward traditional forms of democratic deliberation and republican representation. I trace these themes through the rhetoric of the People's Party, Huey Long, and George Wallace. I conclude by analyzing the link between populism's persistence in U.S. history and the nation's …

Politeia And Paideia. “Reminiscences” Of Western Political Thought In A Reading Of Plato’S Politeia, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha Dec 2005

Politeia And Paideia. “Reminiscences” Of Western Political Thought In A Reading Of Plato’S Politeia, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha

Paulo Ferreira da Cunha

Many readings have been proposed of the Politeia. We propose here a brief reflection of the intertextual type, not upon the theme or main themes of this work, but more precisely in search of aspects that also seem to have acquired a posterity (or at any rate a universality that allows for the detection of coincidences). It is not merely that Plato’s great utopian ideas have found an echo in later authors, as one the most important of western politico-philosophical canons. It is also that some topics and arguments that appear through this richly magnificent dialogue seem to have had …

Review Of Maffeo Vegio: Short Epics, Brian Maxson Dec 2005

Review Of Maffeo Vegio: Short Epics, Brian Maxson

Brian J. Maxson

In this fifteenth volume to the ever-expanding I Tatti Renaissance Library series, Michael C. J. Putnam, together with James Hankins, has prepared and translated four short poems of one of the quattrocento's greatest Latin poets, Maffeo Vegio. This slim volume con tains Vegio's widely read and translated Book XIII of the Aeneid and three of his lesser known poetical works: the Astyanax, the Golden Fleece, and the Antoniad. Following the traditional format of the series, the volume contains an edition of the Latin text with a facing page English translation. I found Putnam's translation to be accurate and lively andVegio to …

Production And Exchange Of Obsidian From The Colca Valley, Arequipa Perú, Nicholas Tripcevich Dec 2005

Production And Exchange Of Obsidian From The Colca Valley, Arequipa Perú, Nicholas Tripcevich

Nicholas Tripcevich, Ph.D.

In Andean archaeology, it is stylistic evidence that form the basis for many investigations of long-distance relationships

and evidence of regional interaction. From hunter-gatherer projectile point type distributions to evidence of expansive

states like Wari and Tiwanaku, the basis of much of the inference regarding prehistory in the Andes is stylistic

relationships in workmanship, architecture, or iconography. In the past fifty years chemical characterization studies have

permitted a second basic form of regional evidence to emerge: provenancing studies.

Provenancing studies complement stylistic evidence because chemical provenance provides unqualified evidence of

contact between two regions. With provenancing studies: We know that …

Learning To See The Satsana As A Religion: Latthi Kho’Ng Phu’An (Beliefs Of Friends) By Sathiankoset And Nakhaprathip, Sarah D. Calhoun Dec 2005

Learning To See The Satsana As A Religion: Latthi Kho’Ng Phu’An (Beliefs Of Friends) By Sathiankoset And Nakhaprathip, Sarah D. Calhoun

Sarah D Calhoun

Beginning in the nineteenth century and continuing on through the early twentieth century, Thai intellectuals became alert both to the category of religion in general, and to the specific religions that were crystallizing in the colonizing and colonized worlds. Their appropriation of these categories transformed the traditional notion of the satsana, the unique heritage of the Buddha, into Buddhism, merely one of numerous satsanas (religions). Certain contours of this large-scale change in the categories of religious self-understanding emerge when we consider the choices of two Thai authors, Sathiankoset and Nakhaprathip, in their book, Beliefs of Friends (Latthi Kho’ng Phu’an). In …
