A Closer Look At Using Stringer’S Action Research Model In Improving Students’ Learning, Mohammad Ali Nasrollahi Jul 2015

A Closer Look At Using Stringer’S Action Research Model In Improving Students’ Learning, Mohammad Ali Nasrollahi

Mohammad Ali Nasrollahi(Ph.D)

Action research is a systematic approach to investigation that enables people to find effective solutions to problems they confront in their everyday lives. A significant feature is that action research lays claim to the professional development in education. Action research as any systematic inquiry conducted by teachers, administrators, and counselors with a vested interest in the teaching and learning process, for the purpose of gathering data about how their particular schools operate, how they teach, and how their students learn. Education is perhaps the most prolific source of action research resources. Action research can be done by teachers in their …

Artistic Synergism And Disruptive Continuity In Nol Alembong's "The Beginning", Oscar C. Labang Jun 2015

Artistic Synergism And Disruptive Continuity In Nol Alembong's "The Beginning", Oscar C. Labang

Dr. Oscar C. Labang

The analytical trajectory of this paper narrows the general, complex and complicated spectrum of intertextuality discourses to a form of intertextual reworking and playfulness, which is called narrative intertextuality. It examines the intertextual matrix upon which the Anglophone Cameroon poet, Nol Alembong, engages a dialogue between texts from different cultural, mythological, philosophical and narratological perspectives. Through textual exegeses of the short poem “The Beginning”, this paper argues that Alembong develops a poetic narrative on the frame of older narratives not necessarily to invite the reader to contemplate the old text but intriguingly to situate the poetic piece within the collective …

"Not I!": Strategies Of Post-Millennial Confessionalistic Poetry, Charlotte J. Pence Jan 2015

"Not I!": Strategies Of Post-Millennial Confessionalistic Poetry, Charlotte J. Pence

Charlotte Pence

With the technological ability and pop-cultural fascination to record private moments and distribute them, poetry that reveals personal details and conflates the identity between speaker and author must feel the effects of what could be viewed as an over-saturation of the confessional—which was during the 1950s and 1960s with Robert Lowell, Anne Sexton, and Sylvia Plath a political, rebellious act. It is far from that now. In this Kim Kardashian era, revealing sex tapes are used as marketing tools to launch careers whereas once they destroyed careers. Considering the hyper-confessional climate of our era and that “Confessional” is something of …

The Vault At Pfaff's: An Archive Of Art And Literature By The Bohemians Of Antebellum New York., Edward Whitley, Robert Weidman Jan 2015

The Vault At Pfaff's: An Archive Of Art And Literature By The Bohemians Of Antebellum New York., Edward Whitley, Robert Weidman

Rob Weidman

The Vault at Pfaff's is an online collection of primary and secondary source documents about the community of bohemian artists, writers, journalists, actors, and critics who joined with Walt Whitman at Charles Pfaff's beer cellar in midtown Manhattan during the years 1855-65. While the Pfaff's bohemians have always held a small place in American literary history thanks to their association with Whitman, there are many unanswered questions about the impact that they had--either as individuals or as a group--on the literary, artistic, and theatrical culture of the antebellum United States. The mission of The Vault at Pfaff's is twofold: (1) …

Using Self-Assessment Checklists To Make English Language Learners Self-Directed, Masoud Mahmoodi-Shahrebabaki Dec 2014

Using Self-Assessment Checklists To Make English Language Learners Self-Directed, Masoud Mahmoodi-Shahrebabaki

masoud mahmoodi-shahrebabaki

Self-directed learning (SDL) has recently gathered momentum among EFL/ESL researchers. Within the SDL framework, learners are responsible to monitor and evaluate their own learning. Student selfassessment can play a crucial role in helping learners become more dedicated and motivated. This study aimed at examining the role of filling out self-assessment checklists by 115 Iranian EFL learners over three successive semesters with reference to the role of gender and level of proficiency. Three classes filled out a standard weekly self-evaluation checklist while three corresponding classes passed the same courses simultaneously without filling out any checklist. The result showed that there is …

Diachronic Analysis Of Three Palestinian Marriage Contracts: Implications For Translators, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat Oct 2014

Diachronic Analysis Of Three Palestinian Marriage Contracts: Implications For Translators, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat

Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh MAT

Unlike other discourses, legal discourse should be very simple, straightforward and unambiguous, and so should legal translation. However, legal translation implies multifarious challenges. Though, it is still under-research in the Arab World and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). The present article attempts to shed some light on the development of the language of legal texts in the OPT as illustrated in the study of three marriage contracts representing three sporadic periods of time— post-First World War, post-Israeli occupation to Palestine and post-foundation of Palestinian National Authority (PNA). The rationale beyond this selection is that the OPT has witnessed a political …

Here, There, And In Between: Travel As Metaphor In Mixed Race Narratives Of The Harlem Renaissance, Colin Enriquez Apr 2014

Here, There, And In Between: Travel As Metaphor In Mixed Race Narratives Of The Harlem Renaissance, Colin Enriquez

Colin Enriquez

Created to comment on Antebellum and Reconstruction literature, the tragic mulatto concept is habitually applied to eras beyond the 19th century. After the turn of the century, the tragic mulatto has become an end rather than a means to questioning racist and abolitionist agendas. Rejecting the pathetic, selfish, and self-destructive traits inscribed by the tragic mulatto label, this dissertation uses geographic, cultural, and racial boundary crossing to theorize a rereading of the mixed race character of Harlem Renaissance literature. Focusing on instances of train, automobile, and boat travel, the study establishes a distinct relationship between the character, transportation, and technology …

The Great Leap Forward That Never Was, Uwe Muegge Jan 2014

The Great Leap Forward That Never Was, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Ten years ago, machine translation (MT) was very much a niche technology for translation professionals. MT tools were expensive, supported only a small number of language pairs, and did not play nice with many standard translation tools. Today, MT is available either for free or at very low cost, in thousands of language combinations, and many translation memory systems offer integrated MT functionality. In other words, MT has evolved by leaps and bounds. As the number of translation professionals who post-edit raw MT has increased dramatically over the past 10 years, the big question is whether developments in post-editing have …

The Intricacies Of Translation Memory Tools: With Particular Reference To Arabic-English Translation, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat Dec 2013

The Intricacies Of Translation Memory Tools: With Particular Reference To Arabic-English Translation, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat

Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh MAT

Translation Memory (TM) technology has been enjoying a good deal of popularity among translation theorists and practitioners since it came onto the market in the 1990s. A theoretical framework for TM vis-à-vis Machine Translation (MT) is first discussed. The paper then examines the applicability of a TM tool, namely Translator’s Workbench (TWB), to Arabic, and the ensuing problems as illustrated by the translation output of ten postgraduate translation students at Al-Quds University for the academic year 2012/2013. The paper reveals that beyond the translation problems with which translation is usually replete, particularly between languages of little cultural and linguistic affinity, …

The Semiotics Of Third Language In Arabic-English Translation, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat Dec 2013

The Semiotics Of Third Language In Arabic-English Translation, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat

Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh MAT

The present paper explores how a third language is dealt with in the translation from Arabic into English, illustrated with al-Qamar il-Murabaʻ: Qiṣaṣ Ghrāibyia by Syrian writer Ghada as-Samman (1994), translated by Issa Boullata (1998) as ʻThe Square Moon: Supernatural Talesʼ (SMST). The paper adopts particularized a theoretical praxis approach. The paper argues that the third language does not occur in a vacuum, but within the boundaries of discourse with an eye to the ideology inscribed in the language we produce, viz. enhancing feministic, narcissistic and nihilistic tendencies by the Source Language (SL) author. The paper shows that the wheels …

Analysis Of Technical ʻFoul-Upsʼ: With Particular Reference To Arabic-English Subtitling, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat Dec 2013

Analysis Of Technical ʻFoul-Upsʼ: With Particular Reference To Arabic-English Subtitling, Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh Mat

Mohammad Ahmad Thawabteh MAT

A cost-effective solution in intercultural communication has been subtitling from English into Arabic for the past few decades. Subtitling stands as one of the most and oldest translation practices in the Arab World. However, the practice is done with blithe disregard for the technical dimension (e.g. space, segmentation, colour, synch etc) and polysemiotic channels (e.g. dialogue, music, picture etc). Results show ʻtwo-bitʼ technical aspect of subtitling; thus the strategies employed by film subtitle translators are questionable. Therefore, the paper argues that subtitling/translation strategies should be sought within the ambit of technical dimension of subtitling.

George Eliot's Counterpublics, Rebecca Thorndike-Breeze Dec 2013

George Eliot's Counterpublics, Rebecca Thorndike-Breeze

Rebecca Thorndike-Breeze

This talk works through some of the different ways that George Eliot complicates dominant Victorian conceptions of community and belonging through her varied narrative representations of intimacy and affect. I will begin with a brief discussion of how intimacy and affect operate in relation to nineteenth-century realism; then I will explore some of the ways in which the Victorian ideal of an imagined sympathetic community works as an aspirational Victorian narrative of intimate belonging, and how in Eliot’s hands this ideal community works as a potential counter-narrative of intimacy, making space for less-conventional intimacies, like the one she shared with …

Digital Self-Efficacy And Language Learning Enhancement In An Online Setting, Karim Hajhashemi, Alireza Shakaramia, Hassan Khajehei

Karim Hajhashemi

The importance of personal factors such as personality traits, learning strategies, self-esteem, and self-efficacy in the complicated task of language learning has been established for years. However, the introduction of computers, networks and their wide communication affordances, seem to impact many aspects of learning and teaching and particularly language learning and teaching. The storage place, manner, and magnitude of learning materials for example, have shifted from the human mind to portable digital storage places that consequently require different types of aggregation, retrieval, and usage of information. Noting the rapid communication of today through networking, ICT competency plays important roles with …

An Oblique Blackness: Reading Racial Formation In The Aesthetics Of George Elliott Clarke, Dionne Brand, And Wayde Compton, Jeremy D. Haynes B.A.H. Sep 2013

An Oblique Blackness: Reading Racial Formation In The Aesthetics Of George Elliott Clarke, Dionne Brand, And Wayde Compton, Jeremy D. Haynes B.A.H.

Jeremy D Haynes B.A.H.

This thesis examines how the poetics of George Elliott Clarke, Dionne Brand and Wayde Compton articulate unique aesthetic voices that are representative of a range of ethnic communities that collectively make-up blackness in Canada. Despite the different backgrounds, geographies, and ethnicities of these authors, blackness in Canada is regularly viewed as a homogeneous community that is most closely tied to the cultural histories of the American South and the Atlantic slave trade. Black Canadians have historically been excluded from the official narratives of the nation, disassociating blackness from Canadian-ness. Epithets such as “African-Canadian” are indicative of the way race distances …

Intimacy In Isolation And The Amplitude Of Reality: Virginia Woolf’S Tense Intimacies, Rebecca Thorndike-Breeze May 2013

Intimacy In Isolation And The Amplitude Of Reality: Virginia Woolf’S Tense Intimacies, Rebecca Thorndike-Breeze

Rebecca Thorndike-Breeze

Virginia Woolf identifies four “dimensions” of human life: “I mean: I: & the not I: & the outer & the inner” (Diary 4: 353). The permeability of these dimensions is at the core of Woolf’s experiments in “re-form[ing]” the novel (Diary 1: 356). Woolf’s novels represent the simultaneously unavoidable isolation and permeability of self, other, internality, and externality; Lacan would later characterize this permeability with the figure of the Mobius strip and his concept of “extimacy,” the simultaneous position of the Other external to, yet at the core of the self. Through analyses of affectively intense representations of consciousness and …
