This thesis will explore the scope of the restitution debate for Greek and Italian classical antiquities and how it has evolved over the past 70 years. Chapter 1 will focus on the scholarly works of well-known figures within the restitution debate, including John Henry Merryman, James (Jim) Cuno, and Patty Gerstenblith. Their work is crucial in developing the terminology that defines the debate and also for understanding their opinions on both sides of the debate. An Analysis Of Symbolic Violence In Classical Texts Comparatively To Modern Feminist Adaptations, Marisa Berner

This thesis explores the symbolic violence and misogyny present in Classical texts, and then compares them to modern feminist adaptations or retellings of the same stories. We explore the treatment of Briseis and other enslaved women in the Greek camp throughout the Iliad, and compare Homer’s perspective to Pat Barker’s in her book Silence of the Girls. We then look at Ovid’s Metamorphoses compared to Wake, Siren by Nina Maclaughlin, and finish with the comparison of Euripides’ plays Iphigenia at Aulis, Iphigenia Among the Taurians, and Hecuba to A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes. The Romulus and Remus myth is a useful source of insight into Greek and Roman values, particularly in the Augustan Age. Livy, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, and Diodorus Siculus, are three authors that give an account of the myth with varying extents of similarities and differences. Livy was nervous about Roman identity at the time he was writing in the Augustan Age, Dionysius tried to show how the Greeks and Romans are similar in their origins and from a cultural standpoint, and Diodorus shows how there is not one single authoritative version of a myth.
