The present paper is a study of the origins, features and significance of the Nwagu Aneke Igbo Syllabary (otherwise known as the Umuleri Igbo Script), one of the thirty or so indigenous systems of writing which (re-)emerged in West Africa during the colonial period as a medium for challenging alien cultural values and for the re-assertion of the superiority of African spiritual and moral traditions and of the thought-patterns which lie behind them. In Okot p’Bitek’s Song of Lawino and Song of Ocol, Ocol and Lawino, presenting themselves as a university-educated man and his non-literate village wife, argue the various merits and failings of traditional, Acholi village life and modern, Westernized life. Accompanying this sociopolitical argument is the personal, emotional conflict between the two: Ocol is rejecting Lawino in favor of a Westernized second-wife, but Lawino refuses to leave him, trying instead to coerce him into returning, body and soul, to her bed. Against the background of the existence of indigenous writing systems (such as Nsibidi pictographic-ideographic signs and the Nwagu Aneke or Umuleri syllabary), this chapter surveys of the emergence of written literature in Igbo from the 19th century "linguistic labors" of the Christian missions (including collections and transcriptions of Igbo oral literature and translations of European classics into Igbo) and the promotion of supplementary readers in the first quarter of the 20th century which ushered in the first modern Igbo novel, Omenuko by Pita Nwana (1933).
