The Hawaiian word for fate is hopena, and since the early 1900s, it’s been a matter of hopena that Varroa mites would eventually come to the Islands. The inevitability increased in 2001 when APHIS/USDA forced Hawai’i to allow transshipments of queens and package bees from New Zealand to Canada to pass through its ports. Since Varroa arrived on Oahu in 2006 and on the Big Island in 2008, many agencies have been working together to create appropriate infrastructure to address the latest arrival. The Frock Coat and Flag motif of gravestone is a short-lived memorial theme borne from a compressed period of American history. The horrors, tragedy, and impact of the U.S. Civil War on American civilians and a lack of a comprehensive plan by the U.S. Congress to provide means or methods to bury and mark the graves of soldiers who died in service contributed to the manifestation of a portrait-style grave marker used by families in a relatively compact geographic region of central Maine between 1861 and 1864.

This poster presents an overview of an exploratory research initiative to examine and assess the viability of developing an institutional repository system at a teaching-oriented four-year university with minimal monetary commitment. A need has been identified for an institutional repository and necessary steps have been taken to implement it. Several departments worked together to create a prototype Institutional Repository using DSpace, an open source repository software. This repository represents a unique endeavor, in that it has been instituted at a non-research based university and has chosen to involve students in the planning, design, implementation, and documentation stages of the project. …

External Possession Meets Bare Nouns In Malagasy, Ileana Paul

This paper examines apparent noun incorporation in Malagasy that is the result of external possession (possessor raising). It is shown that such incorporation is not derived via head movement or via compounding. Instead, it is argued that this is an instance of pseudo noun incorporation (Massam, 2001): the possessum is merged as an NP sister to the predicate. As for the structure of external possession, a non-movement analysis is proposed: the apparent possessor is generated as the specifier of a null possessive head and binds an empty argument position within the possessum. Parks' first assignment was to tour the nation's capital, a city still governed by Jim Crow laws. Stryker locked Parks' camera in a closed and then bade the young black man adieu, with the expectation Parks would not return for a week.

In what ways can we use games to make moral demands of players and encouraging them to reflect on ethical issues? In this article we propose an ethically notable game as one that provides opportunities for encouraging ethical reasoning and reflection. Our analysis of the videogames Ultima IV, Manhunt, and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn highlights the central role that moral dilemmas can play towards creating ethically notable games. This article explores the construction of publicly financed low-income housing complexes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the 1960s. These housing developments were possible thanks to the arrival of foreign economic and technical assistance from the Alliance for Progress. Urban scholars, politicians, diplomats and urbanists of the Americas sought to promote middle-class habits, mass consumption and moderate political behaviour, especially among the poor, by expanding access to homeownership and ‘decent’ living conditions for a burgeoning urban population.
