A Source For Stowe's Ideas On Race In "Uncle Tom's Cabin", Josephine Donovan Oct 1995

A Source For Stowe's Ideas On Race In "Uncle Tom's Cabin", Josephine Donovan

English Faculty Scholarship

Harriet Beecher Stowe's treatment of race in Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) and the colonization scheme with which she ends the novel have long been its most controversial features. Colonization was a term then in use for returning African Americans to Africa as a solution to the race/slavery problem. Stowe concludes Uncle Tom's Cabin by sending most of the surviving black characters—George, Eliza, their children, George's sister Emily, and Eliza's mother, Cassy to Africa where George dreams of founding a Christian republic. In a lengthy letter George explains his colonizationist ambitions: "On the shores of Africa I see a republic." "I …

Civil Society And Congregations As Public Moral Companions, Gary M. Simpson Oct 1995

Civil Society And Congregations As Public Moral Companions, Gary M. Simpson

Faculty Publications

In the midst of this morally charged situation might not Christian congregations hear again the call to a public vocation? As we ponder this prospect, two questions will guide our inquiry. First, where might Christian congregations locate a space in which they might attend to the public moral meaning of everyday rage? That public space, which we will explore, is “civil society.” Second, how can this public space of civil society be accessed so that its moral possibilities can be maximized? We will explore “communicative moral practice” as the best model for accessing the moral possibilities of civil society. What …

Racial Protest, Identity, Words And Form In Maya Angelou's "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings", Pierre A. Walker Sep 1995

Racial Protest, Identity, Words And Form In Maya Angelou's "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings", Pierre A. Walker

Pierre Walker

There is difficulty in critically reading African American literature as apolitical text; all create a political impact whether this is the initial and conscious motive or not. Maya Angelou's autobiography is one such case. Though written in response to an aesthetic challenge - that an autobiography cannot be written as literature (from the Formalist/New Critics point of view) - Angelou's organic unity became a vehicle for her political protest. A critical reading shows how she was able to achieve this.
