A Feminist Theory Of Poetics, Barbara Alice Templeton
A Feminist Theory Of Poetics, Barbara Alice Templeton
Doctoral Dissertations
Many critics have argued that modern poetry is most comprehensively understood as an expansion rather than a rejection of the romantic tradition. Simply stated, their claim is that the romantic lyric, in which the mode of perceiving rather than the perception itself is the central subject of the poem, remains the dominant form in modern and post-modern poetry. In general, contemporary poetry also presents itself as an act of the mind encountering and evaluating the external world. As a poetic movement influenced by feminist thinking, contemporary women's poetry grounds itself in the romantic tradition while deviating from it in ways …

From Falling Beams To Fallen Souls : The Ethical Development Of The Hard-Boiled Detective Novel, Kevin Chaffee
From Falling Beams To Fallen Souls : The Ethical Development Of The Hard-Boiled Detective Novel, Kevin Chaffee
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The hard-boiled detective story ushered in a revolution in the mystery story. The older "formal" mystery story saw society as a benevolent, ordering force which the detective restored by catching the murderer, while the hard-boiled mystery portrayed society as corrupt, wild and flawed, and presented an implicit criticism of it. The three best writers of the hard-boiled school, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ross Macdonald, show an ethical progression, a turning outward, from the personal, inwardly focused ethics of Hammett's characters to the outwardly turned moral understanding of Macdonald's hero.
Dashiell Hammett writes of an ironic, tough world that the …

Charles Williams And Second-Hand Paganism, Judith Kollmann
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Argues that unlike Lewis and Tolkien, who incorporate true pagan worldviews into their works as imperfect precursors of Christianity, Williams uses superficially pagan elements that are really a product of the Judeo-Christian world. Williams’s portrayal of the pagan/occult is more negative, while showing the attractiveness of such power.

Speaking In Parables, Kath Filmer
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Examines how Lewis achieves the many levels of meaning in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by “use of mythic characters, references to everyday aspects of British culture, and Biblical symbolism.” Shows how Lewis “maintains the close relationship between these elements [...] and the form of the Fairy Tale”—creating a parable.
The Rings Of Power, Melanie Rawls
The Rings Of Power, Melanie Rawls
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Examines how Tolkien’s rings of power “evolved until they bear little resemblance to the magic rings” of folk-tales. Using information on the nature of the One Ring and other “statements and clues planted by Tolkien,” speculates on “how the Seven and the Nine acted upon their keepers.”

Repossessing The Past: Discontinuity And History In Alfred Kazin's A Walker In The City, John D. Hazlett
English Faculty Publications
The structure of Kazin's A Walker in the City is based upon two quests: the child self is seeking an American identity and access to history; the adult self is seeking to recapture the lost, earlier self and to "escape" from history. The article discusses narrative strategy and the relationship between concepts of history and the re-creation of the self in twentieth century autobiography.

Polyphonic Theory And Contemporary Literary Practices, M.-Pierrette Malcuzynski
Polyphonic Theory And Contemporary Literary Practices, M.-Pierrette Malcuzynski
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This paper briefly explores some of the ways in which Mikhail Bakhtin reaffirms the principle of the non-identity yet inseparability of theory and practice in literary criticism. The lesson is one which stresses the need to disentangle the critical discourse from idealistic theoretical issues and engage in a materialist practice of criticism. If polyphonical dialogism (especially with respect to contemporary polyphony) is not to be confused with dialectics, then the most urgent and perhaps the most difficult task for the critic facing a polyphonic narrative is to negotiate the text in terms of the socio-historical actuality of the transformation which …
Bakhtin And Tolstoy, Ann Shukman
Bakhtin And Tolstoy, Ann Shukman
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
This article is a study of the way Bakhtin compared and contrasted Dostoevsky and Tolstoy throughout his career. Special attention is given to Bakhtin's two "Prefaces" of 1929 and 1930 to Resurrection and to the dramas in the Collected Literary Works edition of Tolstoy. Bakhtin's view of Tolstoy is not as narrow as is generally thought. Tolstoy is seen as one of many figures of European literature that make up Bakhtin's literary consciousness. He serves as a point of contrast with Dostoevsky and is described as belonging to an older, more rigid, monologic tradition. Bakhtin's prefaces to Tolstoy's works are …
