Women's Center Work-Study Cut, Josephine Swan Nov 1981

Women's Center Work-Study Cut, Josephine Swan

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The Student Senate cut the Women's Center $200 of work-study funds in Tuesday night's Senate meeting. Donnie Oakes, vice-president of the student government said, "There is some movement suggesting that no clubs receive work-study funding. The argument is that is not a practice to get into. The people against it feel that if a club has voluntary membership, they should do the duties and not a work-study student."

Students Burn Jeans In Protest, John Toole Nov 1981

Students Burn Jeans In Protest, John Toole

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

A noon time "jeans burning" demonstration by several Corbett Hall students drew about 40 persons to the mall Friday to protest Gay Jeans Day.

Clothes Make A Dummy, Thomas Burrall Nov 1981

Clothes Make A Dummy, Thomas Burrall

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

"If Johnny Twoshoes jumps off the Empire State Building, then so will everyone else." That seemed to be the theme Friday when university students made Mr. Corduroy an instant millionaire on Gay Jeans Day.

Nude Exhibit Beautiful, Sensitive, Elizabeth Cherneski Howard Nov 1981

Nude Exhibit Beautiful, Sensitive, Elizabeth Cherneski Howard

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

After reading the Campus for four years, something has finally irked me enough to make a response. For a supposedly intellectual community such as our student body, the amount of close-minded, un-liberal opinions that keep surfacing is appalling.

Childish, Offensive Attack, Patty Mutchnick, Margo Murphy Nov 1981

Childish, Offensive Attack, Patty Mutchnick, Margo Murphy

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

I was shocked when I read the article "Pink Jeans," in Wednesday's paper. I am referring to the emotions expressed by John Sandblom when he wrote he would like to punch every gay, throw up on them and that they just aren't any good anyway.

Where Are The Male Nudes, Annie Hayes Nov 1981

Where Are The Male Nudes, Annie Hayes

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

There's nothing obscene about naked human beings, but the comment I have regarding Church's photographer exhibit is that is stereotypically … of the naked female body.

Who Will Be Next Target, Steve Barkan Nov 1981

Who Will Be Next Target, Steve Barkan

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

In Wednesday's issue of the Campus, two letters to the editor viciously attacked gays in general and the Wilde-Stein club in particular. The scurrilous tone of the letters is regrettable, and only illustrates the authors' deplorable lack of tolerance.

Support Right To Choose, Debbie Eaton Nov 1981

Support Right To Choose, Debbie Eaton

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

In response to John Sandblom's letter to the editor, ("Pink Jeans" Nov. 11): John, why are you in school anyway?

Hostility Uncalled For, Carol Roberts Nov 1981

Hostility Uncalled For, Carol Roberts

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Mr. John Sandblum: I feel sorry for you. Your letter to the editor didn't speak very well for you.

The Normals, Laurie Estes Nov 1981

The Normals, Laurie Estes

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The response letters printed about the controversial issue of homosexuality where certainly enlightening, not about the campus gay population, but about the "normals" self-righteousness and discrimination.

Letter Was Objectionable Outburst, Martha Brackley Nov 1981

Letter Was Objectionable Outburst, Martha Brackley

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

John Sandblom's letter to the editor was a disgraceful and disillusioning example of how intolerant some people can be.

Poor Taste, Jesse W. Hamilton Nov 1981

Poor Taste, Jesse W. Hamilton

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

In regards to Mr. Bondeson's and Mr. Sandblom's comments in the Nov. 11 edition of the Maine Campus, I'm safe to say they were in poor taste.

Take A Good Ole Look, W. David Libby Ii Nov 1981

Take A Good Ole Look, W. David Libby Ii

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Although I am a member of the heterosexual community, I feel it is a necessity to respond to Mr. Bondeson's letter, in the November issue, concerning Gay Rights Day.

Students Burn Jeans In Protest, John Toole Nov 1981

Students Burn Jeans In Protest, John Toole

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Forty students and others burn a pair of jeans to protest Gay Jeans Day.

Outraged At Bigotry And Insensitivity, Kathryn Roberts Nov 1981

Outraged At Bigotry And Insensitivity, Kathryn Roberts

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Roger Bondeson: Your letter to the editor in Wednesday's paper concerning the Wilde-Stein Club's "ingenious cheap shot on innocent people (innocent of what, Roger?)" evoked in me, first feelings of outrage, and then of pity—for such ignorance and blindness.

Fruitless Endeavor, Paul Fillmore Nov 1981

Fruitless Endeavor, Paul Fillmore

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

There has been a small storm brewing lately about an exhibit of photographs that has been placed in the union. A minority of the pictures in the exhibit have pictures of naked bodies, specifically, naked women. These particular photographs have some members of the university community up in arms.

Left Turn On Red: Fear And Ignorance, Stephen Betts Nov 1981

Left Turn On Red: Fear And Ignorance, Stephen Betts

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

If ignoring was bliss there would be many happy people at UMO. The reaction by many students to the upcoming Jeans Day shows the ignorance on the subject. People are complaining that the day will infringe on their rights and how it will cause them distress should they wear jeans and be mistaken for a homosexual.

Response: Letters To The Editor, The Maine Campus Nov 1981

Response: Letters To The Editor, The Maine Campus

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Swa Rocks For Women's Rights, Tony Reaves Nov 1981

Swa Rocks For Women's Rights, Tony Reaves

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

When it comes to rocking out for a good cause, the University of Maine Student Women's Association knows where it's at.

The Illusion Of Equality, Marshall Dury Nov 1981

The Illusion Of Equality, Marshall Dury

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Gender equality does not exist and it may never exist. To get a few things straight before the "Letters To the Editor" start pouring in, I am not sexist and I do not look down upon women or, for that matter, men. As I see it, we are equal. Despite some minor physical technicalities, men and women are essentially the same.

Wic Honors Diverse Groups Of Women, Kristin Saunders Nov 1981

Wic Honors Diverse Groups Of Women, Kristin Saunders

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The 2002-03 Maryann Hartman Awards were given to four outstanding women of distinction Thursday. In their 17th year, the Maryann Hartman Awards are sponsored by Women in the Curriculum [WIC] and women's studies at the University of Maine.

Nude Art Photographs Displayed In Union, Tim Rice Nov 1981

Nude Art Photographs Displayed In Union, Tim Rice

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Nudity in art is not uncommon, but this month's exhibit in the Memorial Union of the work of Maine Photographer C. C. Church has raised some questions, and a few eyebrows.

Ingenious Cheap Shot, Roger Bondeson Nov 1981

Ingenious Cheap Shot, Roger Bondeson

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Imagine yourself if you will, walking down a dark side walk somewhere on campus. It just so happens that on this particular night you are wearing jeans and by coincidence it happens to be Friday, alias "Gay Jeans Day." The next thing you know five or six gays approach you giving a sales pitch about the Wilde-Stein club. Talk about your queer situation.

Gay Rights, Jon Dumont Nov 1981

Gay Rights, Jon Dumont

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Ernie Clark's editorial concerning "Gay Jeans Day" made some valid points, but it missed an important one. I maintained that Friday's campaign will be 'taken as a joke by the student body at large."

Pink Jeans, John Sandblom Nov 1981

Pink Jeans, John Sandblom

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

When an article about homosexuals covers a quarter of the front page it really doesn't speak very well for your paper.

Gay Day, E. C. Nov 1981

Gay Day, E. C.

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

The Wilde-Stein Club and its associates have scheduled this Friday as "Gay Jeans Day" on campus, and already the anti-gay jokes have started.
