The Congressional Campaigns Of James K. Polk, 1824-1837, Joseph M. Pukl Jr. Jun 1977

The Congressional Campaigns Of James K. Polk, 1824-1837, Joseph M. Pukl Jr.

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to expose the actions of James K. Polk in his efforts to obtain a seat in the national House of Representatives. The narrative answers this general question: just what did Polk do to gain his initial victory (1825), and in his subsequent successful bids for office. What tactics did he and his opponents use? Was Polk the best candidate, or was he just a better politician? Did issues or personalities influence the election result? If issues, were they local, state, or national in nature, or a combination? And did these issues change over the …

David Hockney, Brian Bartlett Jan 1977

David Hockney, Brian Bartlett

Masters Theses

David Hockney is generally recognised as the most talented British artist of his generation. In my thesis I trace his development from his childhood until the present as a figure lionised by the establishment. Hockney has become highly respected, a Van Dyck of contemporary polite society.

I show his place in a line of tradition in English painting, a tradition where painters stress the anecdotal above a purely visual language England has a commanding tradition of literature from figures such as Shakespeare, Bacon, Byron, Tennyson, Keats and Dickens, to name only a few. Due to this English society insisted on …

The Role Of Betrayal In Selected Drama Of Tennessee Williams, Craig E. Sanderson Jan 1977

The Role Of Betrayal In Selected Drama Of Tennessee Williams, Craig E. Sanderson

Masters Theses

Much of the critical analysis of Tennessee Williams' drama concerns itself with the inherent conflict between ideals and reality in the universe as perceived by Williams. Such analysis, however, has not considered this conflict as a source of betrayal, or betrayal as a dominant theme in Williams' drama. In at least four of his plays it becomes evident how each of the individual characters in Williams' drama endures the conflict of reality and ideals, and the extent to which their respective approaches to the resolution of this struggle result in betrayal. Four plays--all regarded as among his most successful and …

The Three-Dimensional Image Of Chance, Calvin Alexander Mcfarlane Jan 1977

The Three-Dimensional Image Of Chance, Calvin Alexander Mcfarlane

Masters Theses

In order to create a work of art that has, for an unknown observer, as great a variety of meanings and interpretations as possible; the work must be of the sort that will allow any random observer to project their own experience into the work as its meaning and/or interpretation. The work of art created must present to the viewer a rich experience of mutually exclusive associations. For the work to be unlimited in associations, it must be free from any intentionally representative imagery on the part of the artist. In other words, the work should be abstract to the …

Cold Connections As Used By The Metalsmith And Sculptor, Deborah A. Rohr Jan 1977

Cold Connections As Used By The Metalsmith And Sculptor, Deborah A. Rohr

Masters Theses

Metal may be joined to metal and non-metal materials by many techniques. It is my intent to discuss one group of such techniques--that of cold connections, and illustrate them with art works. Although there are many types of cold connections, this study will concentrate on the use of rivets, screws, bolts, adhesives, nails and wire as cold connectors.

A proper definition for cold connection is attachment of one piece of material to another piece of material without use of heat.

Historical reference of the uses of cold connections by prehistoric man, early civilizations of man, through modern times is included …

Paint Application: Theories And Techniques, Nancy King Mertz Jan 1977

Paint Application: Theories And Techniques, Nancy King Mertz

Masters Theses

Is art an inborn source of power or do daily experiences create artistic drives? I am strongly convinced there are biological forces creating these urges in all of us. Many of us, however, are denied the free expression of artistic impulse because of our compulsion toward the social concept of normality; the creative impulses are ignored until, finally, the ability and urge completely diminish.

However, states Joyce Cary, "Those of us who obtain solitude in thought, create freedom of mind; each of us is compelled to form our own ideas of things." If we wish to convey these ideas or …

V. S. Naipaul: The Development Of His View Of Man, Kim Lin Forrester Jan 1977

V. S. Naipaul: The Development Of His View Of Man, Kim Lin Forrester

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine V.S. Naipaul's view of the human condition as it develops from a local and comic perspective to a more universal and tragic awareness. The first group, entitled "The Mystic, the Politician, and other Eccentrics," is comprised of his first three novels--The Mystic Masseur, The Suffrage of Elvira, and Miguel Street. Each work is a highly satiric examination of a society in which the author perceives no sign of any intellectual depth as he moves rapidly from one humorous episode to another. The characters are generally of the lower …

Howells, Marriage, And Swedenborg: The Influence Of Swedenborg's Teachings On Howells' Portrayal Of Marriage In His Novels, Nancy Danner Marlow Jan 1977

Howells, Marriage, And Swedenborg: The Influence Of Swedenborg's Teachings On Howells' Portrayal Of Marriage In His Novels, Nancy Danner Marlow

Masters Theses

Over one-half of Howells' novels are concerned with marriage and courtship. Like many other aspects of his thinking, Howells' ideas of marriage were influenced by the teachings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, an eighteenth century Swedish scientist and theologian. The bulk of Swedenborg's teachings regarding marriage are found in his The Delights of Wisdom Concerning Conjugial Love, published in 1768. Howells showed the influence of Swedenborgianism on the marriages in his novels in three major areas: the actual marriages in his novels, matters relating to marriage, and marital failures.

An important element in Swedenborgianism is the belief in marriages in heaven. …

The Troubled Ecstasy Of Yeats's "Purgatory" And "At The Hawk's Well", Gregory Michael Sadlek Jan 1977

The Troubled Ecstasy Of Yeats's "Purgatory" And "At The Hawk's Well", Gregory Michael Sadlek

Masters Theses

A great amount of W. B. Yeats's writing attests to his fascination with the preternatural. Indeed, it seems that Yeats felt the sacred experience to be somehow central in the living of a full life. Further, in his essay "The Celtic Element in Literature," he proposed that all great literature arises out of the passion which flows from the sacred experience. Yeats thought that drama as well as poetry, then, must plumb this core of life. And in his essay "The Tragic Theatre" he declared that great tragedy deals with feelings and experiences which are universal and timeless and which …

The Balfour Declaration And International Law, Thomas Noreuil Jan 1977

The Balfour Declaration And International Law, Thomas Noreuil

Masters Theses

An American general who formerly headed the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in Palestine stated recently: "The American mind is being manipulated as far as Palestine is concerned." He was referring to Zionist manipulations. My own experiences with the Zionist Organization of America, which refused to answer any of my requests for varied information, confirm the general's charge. My own acquaintance with the Palestine problem has revealed that the equities involved in the area have been buried under a mass of distortion, misinformation and insidious propaganda which have misrepresented the actual facts and veiled the historical and legal truth to …

The Inevitability Of Abstract Expressionism In America, Brenda Hawtin Jan 1977

The Inevitability Of Abstract Expressionism In America, Brenda Hawtin

Masters Theses

Although a non-figurative, non-realistic art had been invented and developed in Europe during the early part of the Twentieth century, it was inevitable, due to innumerable circumstances, that abstract art should culminate in its absolute expression in America, in the form of Abstract Expressionism, during the 1940's.

The combination of these events - large scale works being executed, the awareness of the innovational developement of European art, the changing attitudes from Americans who had experienced other cultures - put American artists at the point where they were ready to invent their own new style of painting. The large abstract paintings …

A Philosophy Of Art, Robert Erickson Jan 1977

A Philosophy Of Art, Robert Erickson

Masters Theses

There is no universally accepted concept of the nature of art. Many are contented in believing that it is just some mystical quality. However, I believe that art is a basic human trait which has evolved over millions of years. This paper shall explain my own belief as to the evolution of art and how it is used by myself and other artists.

That which we believe to be true is a product of our individual experiences. In technology, religion, and in art there are no universal truths. All human beings percieve the world in different ways.

Two billion years …

Objectivity And New Realist Painting, Jacky Palman Jan 1977

Objectivity And New Realist Painting, Jacky Palman

Masters Theses

This thesis describes the methods of New Realist painting ( also known as Sharp-Focus Realism, Photo-Realism, Super Realism and Hyper-Realism ) and its philosophy of objectivity behind the photographic approach and the choice of subject-matter. It also points out that this aim for total objectivity is ultimately unattainable.

A definition of New Realism in painting follows in Chapter One, which also deals with the factors separating it from other photographically realistic styles - the primary distinction being the constant striving of New Realism for complete objectivity.

Chapter Two deals with the influences responsible for the emergence of New Realism. Pop …

Selected Poems Of Abdul Ghafar Ibrahim, Abdul Ghafar Ibrahim Jan 1977

Selected Poems Of Abdul Ghafar Ibrahim, Abdul Ghafar Ibrahim

Masters Theses

Is poetry art or is art poetry? Or what is poetry? What is art? There is art in creating poetry. And there are the poetic elements in creating painting/any form of art.

I have been involved in writing poetry since I was in high school. My first poem was published in 1965. During that time I also received formal training in art. Writing poetry to me then was only putting together words and phrases into ideas and stories. And painting to me at that time was selecting and juxtaposing colors into beautiful pictures on canvas.

Man changes in ideas, ideals …
