Clara Sipprell: American Photographer In Memoriam, Ruth Ann Appelhof
The Courier
Clara Sipprell's photographic career spanned almost seven decades of artistic exploration in picture-making. In April 1975, she died at age 89, leaving behind a great many friends and a pictorial legacy of considerable achievement. Whether she was photographing the crown princes of Europe or Robert Frost in his back yard, Miss Sipprell's ability to capture her subject's innermost personality became the hallmark of her work.

The Significance Of The Equestrian Monument "Joan Of Arc" In The Artistic Development Of Anna Hyatt Huntington, Myrna Garvey Eden
The Courier
The manuscript collection of Anna Hyatt Huntington, sculptor, 1876-1973, left to the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University by Mrs. Huntington is of special interest to students and scholars of American culture. Her correspondence, scrap-books, and diaries are a record of a long and successful career as a sculptor.
By drawing upon archival materials and personal interviews, the present article demonstrates the mergence of two major characteristics of Mrs. Huntington's work in this equestrian monument of Joan: technical precision and idealism.

The Sculpture Of Anna Hyatt Huntington In The Syracuse University Art Collection, Myrna Garvey Eden
The Courier
Anna Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973), one of the foremost American sculptors of her time, presented a large quantity of her personal and professional papers and sculpture to Syracuse University. In addition to the Huntington Manuscript Collection located in the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University, the University owns diverse and numerous examples of her art. These statues, numbering over sixty pieces, represent a variety of subject matter, mood, and grouping completed throughout a career that spanned seventy years of artistic activity. Her general approach continued the French naturalistic tradition of Barye, Fremiet, and Falguiere. Although both wild and domestic animals …

From Syracuse To Keuka, Mostly By Canoe, In 1907: Selections From Fred R. Lear's "Our Canoe Trip", Syracuse University
The Courier
In the summer of 1907 Syracuse University professor of Architecture Fred R. Lear (1882-1950) undertook a hundred-mile canoe trip with his wife. This canoe journey had been taken by the Lears once before, not long after their marriage in the summer of 1906. Following the repeat of the trip in 1907, Fred Lear wrote a memoir of it, hand-lettering his text onto forty-two pages and illustrating it with tipped-in snapshots. His narrative was made for the fun of it and for the entertainment of family and friends, though it now also assumes significance as a unique document of social and …

A Sense Of The Present: Collecting Contemporary Private Press Editions, Judith A. Mistichelli
The Courier
For the collector working within a limited budget, finely printed books from contemporary private presses are especially inviting. Not only are these books in a reasonable price range and more readily available than older rare materials, but also their aesthetic beauty gives testimony to a high degree of craftsmanship.
Reflecting the exhibitor's personal tastes, the books selected for this essay are distinctive editions of twentieth century poets and exemplify outstanding design and workmanship. They also demonstrate the extraordinary suitability of poetry to artistic expression in book design.

A Piece Of Epic Action: The Trial Of Aaron Burr, Suzanne B. Geissler
A Piece Of Epic Action: The Trial Of Aaron Burr, Suzanne B. Geissler
The Courier
The trial of the former vice-president Aaron Burr for treason established such usable precedents, bringing to the fore the now-familiar issues of "pre-trial publicity," "leaks to the press," and "executive privilege."
The trial was, nonetheless, a "piece of epic action," inspiring some of the most colorful courtroom histrionics ever seen in America. Masters of the rhetorical flourish, such as William Wirt and Luther Martin, played to packed houses throughout the six-month trial. Thanks to David Robertson, a Petersburg Virginia lawyer, who took down the entire proceeding in shorthand, a record of the trial was made available to the public. It …

From The Collector's Library: Tales From A Village Bookshop, Roderick Benton
The Courier
Another in the Courier's "From the Collector's Library" series, this article relates the history of the Wolcott Shop in Skaneateles, which sold rare books to famous collectors for years. Many of the rare books sought out had to do with Syracusan history, or were first editions of famous New York authors. The store had a certain grace and manner that is today exceedingly rare.

A Retrospect Of "Western" Travel: 1834-1836, Elise Linn Prentis
The Courier
In August, 1834, a most extraordinary and yet, in some ways, quite ordinary Englishwoman named Harriet Martineau set sail for the United States where she intended to travel for two years. Thirty-two years old and already famous on both sides of the Atlantic, she was, in her own phrase, "Lafayetted" wherever she went. Famous statesmen hastened to calion her, six carriages were placed at her disposal, hostesses vied for her presence at social events. But one year later, in August of 1835, a spontaneous and courageous action on her part caused the doors which had been open to her to …
