Religion In The Virginia Statutes, Earnest T. Gearheart Jr May 1935

Religion In The Virginia Statutes, Earnest T. Gearheart Jr

Honors Theses

This work began as a listing of abstracts of laws pertaining to religion and an investigation of those institutions revealed therein; but its scope has enlarged to consist of a listing of those laws, an index to that list, and a fairly extended history of the evolution of real religious freedom in Virginia. Mr. P. A. Bruce and others have covered the field of describing those institutions far better than I could, so that there was no use attempting to duplicate their work. My efforts have been directed to studying the source and effect of those laws which were most …

Richmond's Miss Van Lew, Allan H. Lane Jan 1935

Richmond's Miss Van Lew, Allan H. Lane

Honors Theses

Legend has it that Miss Van Lew was a spy, but there has always been a reasonable amount of doubt as to the correctness of this statement. Investigations into the sources of these rumors have been few, and then, considering the fact that Miss Van Lew was very secretive about her actions during the War Between the States, there is not much material left at the late date to reconstruct the story of her operations. However, from what material could be located, several points have been brought to light which should prove conclusively that Miss Van Lew was an agent …

History Of The Supreme Court Of Appeals Of Virginia, Richard C. Poage Jan 1935

History Of The Supreme Court Of Appeals Of Virginia, Richard C. Poage

Honors Theses

This paper is an attempt to describe in brief compass the evolution of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals since its beginning in the year 1779. This period, which historically began with the Virginia Constitution in 1776 and extends to the present day, is truly modern history. The problems which it solved and the problems which it left unsolved are of vital concern to the present generation.

It is obvious that such a subject as the one chosen is one about which volumes could well be written; but such a task would requite a great deal of time and a …

The Last Battle Of The War Between The States, Edward J. Norfleet Jan 1935

The Last Battle Of The War Between The States, Edward J. Norfleet

Honors Theses

The last battle of the War Between the States occurred in a vicinity particularly well adapted for the military tragedy that it was. The meandering Appomattox river found its way between hills the were high and close to the stream, making the approaches to it very difficult. It was a poor defensive position because the rear could be easily taken. Over the whole of this area grew dark pine woods, broken by scattered plantations and a few small farms. Under the circumstances the Confederates did all that could be expected.

A Study Of The Trial Justice Court Of Henrico County, Joseph A. Alexander Jan 1935

A Study Of The Trial Justice Court Of Henrico County, Joseph A. Alexander

Honors Theses

I will be frank in admitting that it was with the greatest misgivings that I accepted the assignment to make a study of the Henrico Trial Justice Court. The work laid out before me was in Virgin territory for, to the best of my knowledge, no study similar to that which I contemplated has been undertaken before. Thus, it was only natural for me to visualize the problems which would beset me, the unfamiliar legal terms which would puzzle one and the dreary court scenes which would leave me drunk with their monotony. Well, I came to the problems, saw …
