Performing Menken: Adah Isaacs Menken's American Odyssey, Renee M. Sentilles Jan 1997

Performing Menken: Adah Isaacs Menken's American Odyssey, Renee M. Sentilles

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation explores notions of self-invention and performance in mid-nineteenth century America by examining the life and writings of actress and poet, Adah Isaacs Menken, from roughly 1835 to 1868. During America's Civil War years, Menken became an international star in the controversial title role of Mazeppa, an equestrian play. at the climax, soldiers forcibly stripped Mazeppa (Menken) to reveal her body in a costume suggestive of nudity. The soldiers tied her to a horse and sent her careening up a steep mountain into the theatre rafters. This provocative "breeches part" allowed Menken to pursue unusual freedoms for a ...

Sites Of Southern Memory: The Autobiographies Of Katharine Dupre Lumpkin, Lillian Smith, And Pauli Murray, Darlene O'Dell Jan 1997

Sites Of Southern Memory: The Autobiographies Of Katharine Dupre Lumpkin, Lillian Smith, And Pauli Murray, Darlene O'Dell

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This study argues that Katharine DuPre Lumpkin, Lillian Smith, and Pauli Murray used sites of regional memory in their autobiographies, particularly Confederate burial sites, to discuss how segregation divided not only the southern landscape and the southern people, but southern minds and bodies as well. In the southern graveyard, memory of the Confederate South was stored in tombstones and memorials, in Confederate flags driven into grass plots, and in Memorial Day speeches and rituals associated with the burial of the dead. Cemeteries housed the language of southern memory. Here, identity was spoken in ritualistic form--inscribed on tombs, in texts, and ...

Studies In The Anticatholic Origins Of The Anglo-American Self, John Patrick Thaddeus Barrington Jan 1997

Studies In The Anticatholic Origins Of The Anglo-American Self, John Patrick Thaddeus Barrington

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Anticatholicism in the early modern, English-speaking world was far more than a crude prejudice. Instead, anticatholic ideas and rhetoric provided an important stimulus for public discussion of a wide range of theological, political, economic, and social issues. Hatred of the Catholic Church was a vital factor in the early development of the public sphere in the English Empire.;The question of English, Protestant identity was central to much of the discourse that took place in the public sphere. Although all participants in this discourse agreed about certain elements of what constituted "popery" and English Protestantism, there was wide disagreement about ...

Keeping The Republic: Ideology And The Diplomacy Of John Adams, James Madison And John Quincy Adams, Robert W. Smith Jan 1997

Keeping The Republic: Ideology And The Diplomacy Of John Adams, James Madison And John Quincy Adams, Robert W. Smith

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation explores the extent to which the political ideology that formed the basis for the American republic shaped American diplomacy, using John Adams, James Madison and John Quincy Adams as case studies. American statesmen drew on a variety of sources for republican principles of diplomacy. The law of nations and the Scottish political economists supplied the ideas of an international balance of power and freedom of trade. English writers of the Opposition Whig school provided concepts such as political separation from Europe, reliance on a navy for defense, abhorrence of a standing army and, indirectly, the belief that the ...

First Contact: Early English Encounters With Natives Of Russia, West Africa, And The Americas, 1530-1614, Melanie Lynn Perreault

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In recent years, the field of comparative history has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity as scholars attempt to understand the past in a global context. This study examines the early period of English exploration of the Atlantic world and the confrontation of English men and women with natives of geographically distinct regions. By comparing English interactions with Russians, West Africans, and North and South Americans during the contact period, this dissertation argues that the mutually constructed dialogue between the visiting English and the natives of each region was a struggle for power and control. In their efforts to construct the ...
