The Richmond Junto And Politics In Jacksonian Virginia, Wade Lee Shaffer

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation offers the first full-length study of the Richmond Junto and its role in shaping politics in Virginia between 1815 and 1845. The Junto led the Jacksonian movement in Virginia and worked successfully to keep the state allied with the Democratic party of andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren until the early 1840s. The Junto represented an influential force in Virginia politics during this transitional period, and to a certain extent this small group of men, led by Thomas Ritchie, Peter V. Daniel, andrew Stevenson, William H. Roane, and Richard E. Parker, epitomized the state's response to the ...

R C Scott: A History Of African-American Entrepreneurship In Richmond, 1890-1940, Michael A. Plater

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This study examines the socioeconomic aspects of ethnicity as a way to understand African-American entrepreneurship in the early twentieth century. In an attempt to separate the influence of ethnicity from the social and environmental elements that restrained many African-American entrepreneurs, the study focuses on the African-American funeral industry. The funeral industry provides a rare example of an industry that successfully operated on a voluntarily segregated basis. Sheltered from discrimination and racism, African-American funeral directors not only survived and surpassed their white counterparts, but also organized a national fraternity of economic and political elite who wielded significant power in the United ...

Revisions And Evasions: Flannery O'Connor, Southern Literary Culture, And The Problem Of Female Authorship, Katherine Hemple Prown

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A look at the early manuscripts of Flannery O'Connor's two novels, Wise Blood and The Violent Bear It Away, reveals that she worked hard to remove any traces of feminine sensibility or perspective from her work, hoping to distinguish it as superior to the efforts of other southern "penwomen." Both novels underwent a long and difficult transformation from stories centered upon the exploits of a diverse group of characters to novels whose sole focus was on a few male protagonists. Eager to develop her art within a framework acceptable to southern New Critical authorities like John Crowe Ransom ...

This dissertation examines the personnel actively trading with native Americans in the greater South Carolina area from 1670-1755. Buying Into The World Of Goods: Eighteenth-Century Consumerism And The Retail Trade From London To The Virginia Frontier, Ann Smart Martin Jan 1993

Buying Into The World Of Goods: Eighteenth-Century Consumerism And The Retail Trade From London To The Virginia Frontier, Ann Smart Martin

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This is a study of the cultural problem of consumerism. It examines the complex, rich, and multi-varied world of consumer goods in eighteenth-century Anglo-America, when traditional notions of hierarchy were increasingly challenged by new patterns of social and geographical mobility and changing measures of human worth. It was also a time when more and more consumer goods came into the lives of average men and women.;Few historians have scrutinized the role of those goods or the means and motives for their acquisition. Objects become an important part of the story of consumerism, however, by examining affordability (commodities and value ...

Selected Family Therapy Outcomes With Bowen, Haley, And Satir, Joan Elizabeth Winter

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate three models of family therapy: Bowen Theory, Haley's Strategic Family Therapy, and the Satir Process Model. The question that was explored concerned what family therapy approaches achieve what types of engagement, dropout, completion, satisfaction with treatment, locus of control, and family functioning outcomes with what kinds of delinquent families. Further, what effect do traditional court services have on a similar sample of delinquent youths and their families.;A non-equivalent, quasi-experimental design with pre and posttest treated (n = 188) and comparison (n = 61) groups was employed. Independent variables included the treatment interventions ...

According to a nationwide study completed by the National Center for State Courts in 1980, apprehended juveniles are usually notified of their Miranda rights at various times from the point of contact with the police through and including the adjudicatory hearing. If the juvenile desires to relinquish those rights, he/she is required to sign a document attesting to his/her understanding of and wish to waive those rights. This descretionery privilege places the juvenile on the same Constitutional footing as an adult.;The purpose of this study was to examine the comprehension of Miranda rights by a sample population ...
