The Diasporic World Of The Great Dismal Swamp, 1630 -1860, Daniel O. Sayers

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The Great Dismal Swamp of North Carolina and Virginia stood as a remote landscape in the heart of the Tidewater throughout the historical period. Between ca. 1630 and 1860, thousands of Diasporans took advantage of the remoteness of the swamp in various ways and formed a variety of communities. Within these Diasporic communities were Native Americans, maroons, and enslaved canal company workers who joined or formed communities based on individual and specific reasons for choosing to permanently inhabit the swamp. Diasporic communities emerged on islands in the swamp and the relative locations of these landforms had significant impacts on what …

The Cia & The Cult Of Secrecy, David Shamus Mccarthy Jan 2008

The Cia & The Cult Of Secrecy, David Shamus Mccarthy

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation re-conceptualizes the scandals that engulfed the intelligence community in the mid-1970s. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) confronted an unprecedented crisis during these years: the Pike hearings in the House of Representatives, the Church Committee in the Senate, and an executive branch commission led by then Vice President Nelson Rockefeller. Historians and political scientists have studied these events before, but I present a nuanced interpretation of the intelligence investigations by placing them in a broader political and cultural context. to fully understand the impact of the so-called "Year of Intelligence," I argue that scholars need to focus on what …

In The Pale's Shadow: Indians And British Forts In Eighteenth-Century America, Daniel Patrick Ingram Jan 2008

In The Pale's Shadow: Indians And British Forts In Eighteenth-Century America, Daniel Patrick Ingram

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

British forts in the colonial American backcountry have long been subjects of American heroic myth. Forts were romanticized as harbingers of European civilization, and the Indians who visited them as awestruck, childlike, or scheming. Two centuries of historiography did little to challenge the image of Indians as noble but peripheral figures who were swept aside by the juggernaut of European expansion. In the last few decades, historians have attacked the persistent notion that Indians were supporting participants and sought to reposition them as full agents in the early American story. But in their search for Indian agency, historians have given …

The Shadow Of The Revolution: South Texas, The Mexican Revolution, And The Evolution Of Modern American Labor Relations, John William Weber

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation examines the creation and evolution of the agricultural economy and labor relations of South Texas from the late Nineteenth Century to the Nineteen Sixties. The changing demographic reality of Mexico, with massive population shifts northward during the last quarter of the Nineteenth Century, caused massive emigration to the United States once the violence of the Mexican Revolution erupted after 1910. Hundreds of thousands fled north of the border, most of them traveling to South Texas. This migration wave out of Mexico met another group of migrants traveling from the Southeast and Midwest who sought to purchase farm land …
